FIFA World Cup Brasil 2014

Kovač for Croatian TV: "I saw that on replay and if that is a penalty maybe we should go play basketball instead". Than he added: "If this is what whole WC will be about than there is no need to play. Let's just go home". He concluded his statement by saying that he will try to bring player's morale back up and that if they play like this against Cameroon and Mexico than there is no way they can't be 2nd in the group.

that gif of 'The Freddie show' is appalling ...Modric and Oscar were amazing such talented players!

the moral score of tonight´s match for was 2 x 2.
Croats were operated without anesthesia by Yuichi Nishimura!

A shame also for the brazilian elite crowd on the stadium, booing and cursing the president Dilma.

If that was a penalty we will see lots of penalties. Bad performance from Pletikosa on all 3 goals.
No foul from Olic on Julio Cesar.
Knew this would happen. Brazil have to win this.

Respect for saying it like it is for the press, Niko.

Hours passed but I'm still so angry at this, can't even imagine how the players must be feeling right now, this is beyond unacceptable...

+1

Pletikosa on the third goal looked ridiculous really, amateur even.

I remember that in Adidas Power Soccer '98, you were able to dive in the most ridiculous ways you could imagine. None of them was as ridiculous as Fred's one.

How can you guys say that the Olić challenge wasn't a foul. He iniciates the contact with the keeper on the small box. Plus Júlio César was about to grab the ball, even touche it.

There's so much hate and people jump to huge conclusions after one match. Welcome to the World Cup, a very emotional affair and that's why I love sports.

I'm not trying to defend the ref or the game, but I think by the letter of the law, the ref saw the player pull another player's hand and that player went down (albeit very softly) and it was a foul. Could Fred have stayed up? Of course. But in the milliseconds that it happens, the ref had to make a decision and by the law, that is a foul and thus a penalty. We're helped by all these replay, but the Ref isn't and if the Ref had to consult the replay so many times to make a call, the game will be 2.5 hours long.

Is the world cup corrupt? Is it scripted? I don't think so, not from that one game. So if Brazil lose in round of 16 to spain or netherlands, is it then not scripted? are FIFA then too scared to carry on their script so they halted it and made Brazil lose? If Brazil does win it, is it all scripted and due to corruption and not at all to the players who played their hearts out? Let's not jump to quick conclusions after just one match and let the tournament play out.

Well, he did great job than. Cesar is taller than Olić (186cm vs. 182cm) and he can use his hands. Yet, before that contact happened his hands were lover than Olić's hands. So he is either very bad goalkeeper who can't even jump without falling back or he didn't even try to get to the ball. And anyways, it has been reported by reporters from stadium that referee stopped the game because of Olić's handball, even though that was not even close.

Anyways, this is what we saw yesterday
YouTube - Minion - Football - Despicable Me

wow! we're not even one day into the world cup and this thread already looks like the comment section of a youtube video....

"it's a scandal!"
"what a disgraceful event! i'm shocked!"
this is a joke.. i blame fifa, uefa, blatter, the International Olympic Committee, dilma rousseff, michel platini and paulo coelho for this!"
"this is unprecedented! it must be the first time a ref favoured the home team.... i don't believe in anything anymore!!!"
"i'm never watching a world cup game again!"
"i'm never turning on my tv again!"
"i'm never setting foot into a churrascaria aain!"
"it's a conspiracy i tells ya!"
"...and Havelange ’s spirit, ranging for revenge, shall cry “havoc” and let slip the dogs of war!"
(in this context, the dogs of war would be u guys :P )

there's not a single comment about football in the last 2 pages. not one. a guy even coined the expression "moral score".... seriously?!? moral score?
i wish i could say u can't make this shit up, but apparently u can!

anyway guys, i don't wanna judge anyone or ruin your fun (sorry if i mocked u a little, but u're just too easy a target and i couldn't help myself).
i would just like to point out that there might be people who'd like to talk about football in here. i know it'll sound crazy to u, but there are people who don't give a fuck about referees, people who can enjoy a football game without screaming out of frustration and anger every time the ref makes a blunder, people who are more interested in talking about the football played on the pitch than in bitching about the ref's calls....
theese people won't ever be able to talk about football in here, because this thread will keep being flooded by angry, outraged comments for the entire tournament (and if u don't believe me, just take a look at the champions league thread!).

i have a suggestion for the moderators; why don't we have 2 world cup threads: this one, where people can dramatically vent their discontent and outrage at their will; and another one, where people can actually talk about football and just football: no drama queens allowed, no referee bitching allowed; and if someone pollutes that thread with a post about an undeserved penalty or an unawarded red card, u moderators could just move that post to this thread.

i think it's a pretty good idea. people who don't care for dramatic bitching are a stunning minority on the internet, and we'll never be able to chat with each others about football in this thread, because that would be seen as an off topic abomination and the conversation would be immediately derailed back to "crazy scandal shouting".
i even got a name for the 2 threads: we could call this one "the moral score thread" and the other one "the actual score thread". :D

Julio Cesar would have never grabbed the ball - have a look at his hands the replays - the ball would have slipped through and it would have been a corner kick, but in the end it is a foul because Olic jumps into Cesar inside the 5m box.

Unfortunately Pletikosa had a bad day - all 3 goals have been avoidable.

Fred is a big cunt. Diving and praying to god is just ridiculous.
The referee was quite ok in first half, but second was a desaster...

I hope we don't have to discuss every match about such bad decissions and especially about not deserved penaltys...

Nevertheless: Croatia did a good job and Brasil was only slightly better. In the end it was a entertaining opening match - have seen much worse first matches of a world cup. ;)

you guys already wrote all i wanted to say too...

nothing more to add, my fear from the begining was that "big" teams like brazil, argentina, spain... will have protection from the refs.

that penalty last night was first class act of comedy :)

Is not about who jumps higher. Olić jump higher but he put the right arm over the left shoulder of J. César, when the latter was about to grab the ball. It's a clear foul. Even between two outfield players that would be a foul, let alone against the GK in the six-yard box.

YouTube - Ivica Olic jumps brazil keeper Julio Cesar and goal to 2-2 is disallowed. Brazil vs Croatia

Read the football rules again, who jump first? Olic, next it's Julio Cesar, it's not fault. No more to say. :COAT:

Lets talk football ben!

Brazil failed to impress me, I don't think we are going very far.

Fred was disgusting, not only for the dive, but he did absolutely nothing, the dude is done as a player, can't jump, can't run, can't pivot, does not have offensive presence, and he is our 'best' option.

Playmaking also disappointing me, both Luiz Gustavo and Paulinho are exceptional at one thing only, while Luiz Gustavo finds out where the opponent offense is going and is very good at covering that space, Paulinho is the opposite he tends to find out where the brazilian attack is going and finding that space. Which would sound like an awesome partnership, but it is not.
Cause they are average to bad in what became the most important thing for a guy at that position, quality, quick, accurate passing. The playmaking ability. I think Felipão gets this, hence the Hernanes getting in to try to fill that gap. But I don't think he is that guy to do that job either.

I think we will struggle to create against composed teams. The team will try to win on pressure, steals and quick offense, but it might not work on all games.

The first impression was not good for me.

I'm not a fan of Brazil, and I don't want them to win this WC , but most of you guys are exagerating, taking it too harshly ..

no doubt about Julio César's case, it the ABC of football, GK has the priority, if you touch him there, it's a foul ..

about the penalty, yes Fred dove, but the referee made the right choice, as I said in a previous comment, Lovren pulled Fred (slightly yes, but he pulled him from his shoulder), that's simple, that's the law, so it's a penalty, no matter if Fred dove after that or not, it's like Neymar with Ramos in the last Liga Classico, ramos slightly touched Neymar's anchle, and Neymar took advantage of it and dove .. and even if the ref didn't give a penalty, it would be also a right choice .. that's the kind of penalties you can either ignore or give ..

yes Cuky that Olic case should have been given a free kick ... no doubt ..

and here I found a GIF for the penalty from a different angle, see Lovren's hand ..
If a was a ref, I won't give it, but I understand the ref's decision ..

I was the one that mentioned the moral score!
It´always a joke present in many match reviews here. Don´t take it serious buddy!
The two team performed equally tonight, Croatia was robbed and Brasil reacted well after conceding a goal, hence my moral score.

@jihado86

Well yes, nobody denies that there was contact between Lovren and Fred...but if that contact is enough to award penalty, why wasn't there penalty whenever there was a corner or free kick?

Ben, sometimes it isn't possible to talk football without talking about the ref.
Yesterday's match was a rather good one, i liked Croatia's attitude. The played against the big favourites, yet they didn't park the bus.
It was a good open game. I hope this will set the tone for the rest of the WC, but i'm rather pessimiqtic about that.

Brazil did not impress me, although hats off to Neymar for his work rate.

The only thing i want to say about referees (i once opened a referee thread by the way, so there is one), is that i hope the team that wins this cup will win it because they are the best team, nit because they are the home nation or the most popular team in the world.

Anyway, i'm looking forward to watching Chile, they could be one of the dark horses in this WC (together with Colombia and Switzerland).

Yesterday's match also proved that Croatia have a much better team than what they showed at the end of the qualification round...but if Pletikosa will not play better they will go home pointless...no matter how good they are.

Wasn't impressed by Kovacevic and i've seen both Rakitic and Modric play better, but maybe Brazil were better than they seemed to be...they put immense pressure once the 3 Croatian golden boys had the ball...Both Modric and Rakitic lost the ball more than usual...credit should maybe go to Brazil for that...

I remember when USA had a perfect goal disallowed ( ref gave no explanation , commentators were glue less) vs Slovenia . Everyone's attitude was yh who cares. Most Americans know the script and get on with the next match.

Today will be about the football !

you have 20-30 like that situations in one match, so lets play just penalyt shoot out.

Ben, sometimes it isn't possible to talk football without talking about the ref.

of course, but 2 entire pages of people repeating over and over again how outraged they are, is kinda boring. yes, the ref messed up, and if i were a croatian i wouldn't be happy, but it was hardly unexpected. the home team always gets a bit of help during a world cup, it's natural. it's not an original story, so i really don't understand how a football fan could pretend to be "shocked and surprised". also it's not like his mistakes were that blatant. we see much worse refereeing than this in premier league every week. neymar's elbow was a border-line call (in italy we call theese situations "orange card situations" as they're between a yellow card and a red card worthy offense). the kid is an ass, but i for one was happy the ref didn't send him off. fred's dive was quite difficult to spot in real time, so nothing shocking on that front either. and as for the julio cesar contact, i thought that was another tricky situation.... one might disagree with the ref's decision, but that's certainly not stuff to be "outraged" about.
fuck, i can't believe u guys had me talking about the ref too! :P

sorry mate, didn't mean to sound harsh. mine was supposed to be a funny post, but i guess i sound pretentious even when i don't intend to :P
anyway i absolutely didn't mean to have a go at u, buddy. i was just mocking u guys a little

i think u're being too harsh sauce. first off this croatian team is no joke. even without mandzukic they are a very good team, and there's no shame in struggling against them, especially at midfield.
i really like luis gustavo as a player, but yes, he and paulinho are no playmakers. perhaps putting another midfielder like hernanes instead of hulk (who was all over the place yesterday) would have been a better idea, as, with that midfield, u basically gave up any hope to control the tempo of the game from the start... but then again, it's easy to come up with brilliant tactical ideas after the match. :))
i also agree about fred.... is he really your best option for that position?

anyway it was only the first match. with all the pressure of playing in front of your own crowd, u were supposed to look a bit too nervous and "stiff". i think this win will help u loosen up a bit, and brasil will only improve from now on.
and if croatia keep playing like this, they won't have much trouble making it to the next stage either. :))

that's the point, refs should always whistle a penalty in all those situations, then defenders will stop making those mistakes ..

it's refs fault all these years, they neglected such fouls, and when one ref applies the rules and give the foul, everybody lose their mind ,as the Joker said :D.

I'll be damned if a hand on the shoulder makes an athlete fall down like that, especially one who's 1m86 tall, weighting 89kg.

I'm Brazilian and I support the club for which Fred plays, but he lost tons of respect from me by doing that. What he did was unexcusable, thoroughly disgusting.
If FIFA introduced a limited amount of replays per team each match and/or retrospective bans for diving we would be seeing more football, less scam.
If that was the case, we would be talking about football here.

But the way things are going, many matches will be all about the referees.

I'm waiting for the next matches for us to move on and start talking about actual football here. At least until the next cock up happens.
