FC Barcelona Thread

dude you sound nuts . I bet u have messi all over ur wall (mural) n name ur pets messi :P

I guess you don't watch Barcelona matches entirely and you haven't seen him live. Besides, I know your deep hate towards any Barcelona matter! I know you!!!!! :BYE:

I've seen the likes of Maradona, Romario, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Zidane, even Cruyff when I was 4 (but can't remember a thing)... and nothing compares. Ask to the players and trainers in Spain. Even Xavi, Iniesta and co say they can't believe it and that they feel like amaterus when they play with him watching everything he does. That must count for something!

If Cesc join him at barca they will be magical like Jordan n pippen  .

Drekkard is right about those highlights.

I've looked at last year's Champions League "greats" in terms of scoring. Messi, Rooney, Ronaldo. I believe Messi touches the ball on average three times more than the other two to score. And that means dribbles and feints.

Even the hat-tricks. In only one of them [Tenerife] did he score 3 goals through 3 touches. Most players haven't dribbled their entire career what Messi dribbled last year alone.

What enthouses me about him is that he's actually showing constant signs of improvement! I mean he had a great treble season and even though Barca won less last year Messi was way better. Now the new season starts with a great Messi hat-trick, he scores in the third league minute and leads his team to the most dominating Champions League victory in recorded history [starting 2003]. Xavi played more games in the UCL than the number of passes completed by Panathinaikos!

And i'm under the impression he's working on his shooting strength. Can't hurt.

Cristiano ronaldo is a great player, and if Messi were not playing football, he could be considered the best footie player. Cristiano is a hard worker, but his attittude makes some people hate him (me included) and he plays too much the role of a star (and that of a diver). Messi may not do tv ads in underwear, but he's one of those players that define a full generation (or many) and make history. One of those players that arise only every 20 years if we're lucky.

To me he's already at the same level than Cruyff, Pele or Maradona. Yes, he lacks a world cup, but blame Maradona for that. Messi did what he could in a total mess of a NT.

To rate him as he deserves (at the top of the top, alongside the other football gods) you have to watch him live. Really, watch this guy play live and you'll understand everything. Everywhere he goes people ends up admiring him and in awe. When you see that guy at full pelt, turning in a dime with the ball being part of his feet... I have no words, I had never seen anything like it.

At his 23 years he's won everything being the absolute star of the team, scoring nearly 40 goals per season without being a striker (like the good old "10s" he plays everywhere, wherever he sees right to be). Oh, and giving about 15-20 assists per year, so more assists than Xavi, for example.

And if you see a collection of his goals and lpays so far, he's got more material than most of the other stars full-career hilghlights combined.

Let's hope he carries on humble as he is and with that "amateur" love for the sport, which is what, in my oppinion, makes him different than the rest. He's a boy playing football in the park dribbling all his friends to win the match. Only there's 100.000 people watching him play in the park.

Couldn't agree more!

Especially the last paragraph, it's a beautiful analogy. Well said.

Now all we need is for him to improve that right-foot. :P Though to give him credit, even in this regard, he's already improved. There is a LOT more room for improvement on this matter though and I'm hoping it happens but not too optimistic. :/

Add the vision to all that. He's the best assister of the team as well! Something that usually gets eclipsed by his goals, but last year he took part in 70& of the team goals of all season. That's truly amazing for a 23 years guy.

And people forget he's actually a good header, only he's so small. But he knows how to head a ball for sure, and last year he scored more headers than Ibra, for example.

PLF, being myself a left footed, it's VERY difficult to improve the right leg. There aren't many lefties there that can shoot with the right leg. It works very different than to right footed players. Left footed normally can be most skilled and shoot harder, but the con is not being able to shoot with the bad foot.

That said, Messi now and there scores with his right, but there's room for improvement.

The bold bit makes no sense at all, here are some victories since 2003 that are of a greater margin:

November 2007, Liverpool 8 - Besiktas 0
April 2007, Man Utd 7 - Roma 1
March 2009, Bayern Munich 7 - Sporting Lissabon 1
December 2004, Depor 0 - Monaco 5
December 2004, Lyon 5 - Sparta Pg. 0
March 2005, Lyon 7 - Bremen 2

For a Barcelona you seem to have a very short memory, as when your team last played Panathinikos they won 5-0 at home (November 2005, the game where Van Bommel scored after a minute and Eto'o got a hattrick, I think Messi might even have got a goal in that one).

Messi is a good player, but there is so much mis-informed hyperbole and wrong statistics about him such as what you posted.

... You kinda rushed.
I chose my words carefully - i said "dominating" not "biggest margin"/"biggest win". There's a company, Opta Sports, that measures footballing statistics. Look it up. Since fall 2003 they've recorded UCL statistics as well. "Barcelona completed 792 passes against Panathinaikos, a record in the Champions League since Opta started analysis in 03/04." The previous record was 721. Doesn't matter who owned it.

I believe you'll find 792/100, a team passing 7.92 times more than the opponent can be easily classified as "dominating".

Another one: 128 – Sergio Busquets (& Xavi 120) of Barcelona completed more passes in the CL vs Panathinaikos, than the Greek team managed (100).
Barcelona midfielder Xavi has attempted at least 100 passes in all 12 of his Champions League appearances since 2009/10.

I did make a mistake. This was Xavi's 100th CL game and i believed the greeks only managed 99 passes. Apparently it was 100 too.

Seriously - read texts twice as some things get lost in translation. As for me, I happen to be quite accurate with statistics because i find them "fun" (and nothing more). This is related to your "misinformation" statement. Biggest goal margin was Dinamo Bucharest btw, i believe a 11-0. [qualifiers]

Last season overall Xavi got 11 assists, while Messi did 12.

Messi: 9 in Liga, 1 in CL, 1 in Supercup, 1 in Fifa World Club
Xavi: 9 in Liga, 2 in CL
You sure about that? ESPN says Xavi got 18 and Messi got 10.

Besides, Xavi got a ridiculous amount during the treble season, something like nearly 30 IIRC.

Yes, 2 years ago Xavi was great with assists, but back then Messi was playing in the wing and had less impact on matches. Right now he plays all around and he builds up a lot more than before, hence why he has a lot more assists.

Statistics are from AS and MARCA, so I think they're quite accurate than ESPN, but to this point, who knows! The important thing anyway is that Messi is not only a great scorer, he's also a great passer, up there with the best passers, and that is something unique in this kind of player. Xavi is great too but doesn't score much, and should have improved that to reach the truly top level in my oppinion.

it was a clumsy tackle or step , his ankle looked well swollen. btw this game had way too many dives Reyes hasn`t changed a bit n simao dove in slo motion in the box :TD: .Barca players started diving after seeing Reyes getting every dive a free kick that ref allow the players to dive n that led to messi injury.

Ujfalusi tackle was very very dirty. I fear Messi could be out of the pitches for a long long time. I can't understand how Ujfalusi was even moaning for the red card, when it was a brutal agression to Messi.

The Tv commentators were pathetic, seying he was wasting time. Not recognizing when someone's really hurt is bad. They could even say Valencia was wasting time on tuesday?

I heard it will be around a 3-4 weeks which is not that bad as some expected 4 months.

If it happened to a Madrid player, they would've said the same about time wasting.

Doubt it, you probably haven't read spanish newspapers in the last two weeks asking referees to protect Ronaldo from tackles, while in Marca there was an editorial last season that literally claimed that "Messi should be stopped legal or criminally". That's how things are...

4 weeks is a lot of matches, probably 7 or 8. What a shame that we have to stop watching the best player because an idiot decided in the last minute of a match to try and break his leg.

I'd imagine all the British commentators have killed themselves (or are plotting to kill Ujfalusi) now that Messi is injured, their Messiah has been struck down and everyone will pay.

But seriously, it's a shame about the injury, you never want to see the best players missing games.

F*ck you Ujfalusi

With a player who is as good as Messi, that was bound to happen sooner or later.
Maradonna had it (Goicochea, the butcher of Bilbao) and Pele had i during the WC in 1966.
I hope it's a one off...
Sadly football can be a very cynical sport.
