FC Barcelona Thread

I see this guy at Chelsea. Yes, I know, Di Matteo should get an extension and I'm all for it. However, bells are ringing inside my head and a little voice whispers "Guardiola to Chelsea"...

Btw, wise decision. Pep should move somewhere else.

EDIT: Tito Vilanova new head coach.

I could see Guardiola at Arsenal once they finally realise they are going nowhere with Wenger. But he will take a break first.

I'm not sure if Bielsa is a good fit for Barca, and as odd as it sounds, I'm not sure he'd go.

Gracias, Pep. :)

He did the right thing. Quit at the top, through the front door, seeing out his contract. One year resting should do him well.

I wonder what goes in Cesc's head. He went back to Barcelona looking to win trophies... no La Liga, no CL, and now Guardiola leaves.

We have had one of our most successful spells under Wenger and although we haven't won anything in 7 years we have a new state of the art stadium and are valued in the top 5 of the most valued clubs in the world.

So to say we are not going anywhere with him is a bit strong, as I would hate to think where we would be right now without him.

Anyway, some people will only see trophies as an indicator of success and progressing. Try telling that to Liverpool who even if they win the FA Cup aswell as the LEague cup, some fans will still want Dalglish to leave.

Tell that to Birmingham who won the League Cup and got relegated ,to Portsmouth etc

Sorry to go off topic and a rant, but it really annoys me when people talk about our situation and Wenger like that :))

Back on topic, if Wenger does leave and Pep is looking for a club at the time, then I could think of worse managers to have ;))

Not wishing to derail the thread but seven years without a trophy is unacceptable for a club of Arsenal's stature and financial position. Wenger's stubbornness to sign the players needed to take them from 'work in progress' to a title winning side has held them back, and in the mean time talented young players that are hailed as the future of Arsenal leave the club in search of trophies elsewhere.

Would you be worse off without Wenger? I'm not so sure.

Good shout!

Oh about Wenger he wont leave he'll go upstairs me think. Pep would love a job at Arsenal the pressure there is miles apart from barça imo. Chels would be a job for a good pay then leave after a year. He might just chill at Roma though relax n coach on the side wont be watched as much a quieter life too.

So you think Barca won't win any trophies over the next few years? He's won 2 since he's been there and come pretty close (if you call League runners-up and Champs Lge semi finalists close) to others. That happens. But he will more than likely still win more trophies at Barca than at The Arse so I doubt he's worried about that.

well ok then name me a couple of managers who could finish 4th/3rd with the current crop of arsemal players.

From the Premier League I'm sure David Moyes and Martin O'Neill could. Actually I think a good number of managers could keep Arsenal in the top four. But that's not the point. Do you want to finish 3rd or 4th every year or do you want to win the title?

Wenger won't win the title unless he brings in the experienced players that Arsenal so clearly need. The young players need to be assured that they can win things with Arsenal.

It's not unnacceptable, but it isn't great I would admit that, but you said we are not getting anywhere with Wenger and that just isn't true. Hopefully the new stadium and the sound footing we are in as a football club will let us be successful silverwear wise in the near future and keep that success going for a while, we will see.

I don't think any of the players that left, were hailed as the future of Arsenal, Fab it was always known he will leave Arsenal (He left for Barcelona because he grew up there and supports them etc etc, so not just for trophies) and Nasri was good for a combined season of appearences, but never said to be the future of Arsenal (and it is debatable why he left, the money was a big factor for him). (It would be good to know who else? as you make it sound like we are in the habit of selling our best young players?)

I don't mind carrying on the discussion in the Arsenal thread if you can be bothered? otherwise we will leave it, it is a never ending discussion where both of us are right in our own ways :DD

This would have been true about a year ago, but we have many experienced players these days, we brought in a good few last summer.

I know this is old news but I did not get to see the 2nd of Barca-Chelsea and Madrid-Bayern due to work commitments. I'm also not going to go "redundant" on everyone and repeat what has already been said. I was talking w/ a few pub owners and bartenders about the game, Chelsea's tactics in particular and what can be done about teams parking the bus. I said "Name one other sport where a team packs a group of defenders in front of a goal for the majority of a game". They couldn't. Does futbol need illegal D? The NBA has it and it seems to work.

I don't think football needs it.

If you CAN park the bus and maintain your defensive shape and defend cohesively as a perfect unit and get a result, then do it. But very few can.

Even Chelsea and Inter Milan who are the only two teams to have stopped Barcelona over the past 4 years or so had a LOT of luck when they did it!

I don't think it's really a problem or an issue and if you build your defense strong enough and actually CHOOSE to park the bus and defend with 11 men, well, it won't be pretty but it is up to the other team to break you down and score. It's like a chess game after all. You can attack or just defend, but if you do so, it's up to your opponent to break that wall down if they want the Win and the 3 points.

I think it's all fair and good. Football is a different game to most other sports. Don't think you can realistically relate the much smaller court of Basketball and the 5-on-5 in a totally different game to this.

Barcelona attacker Lionel Messi has broken Gerd Muller's record of scoring the most goals in a European season after firing a hat-trick in the Liga encounter against Malaga at Camp Nou.

Messi started the season with a single goal in the 2-2 Spanish Supercopa draw against Real Madrid, and has since gone on to surpass numerous records.

The Argentina international already broke Barca's all-time official scoring record earlier in the campaign at the tender age of 24. Messi also became the first player in the Champions League era to score five goals in a single match, when he achieved the feat against Bayer Leverkusen on March 7, while joining Jose Altafini as the highest scorer in a single European Cup campaign with 14 strikes.

MESSI..... well I don't have any words to describe him, I'm lucky to witness this..
I think now Golden Ball will go to Messi.... 4 times in a row, now thats another record

Nowadays nobody ever mentions Gerd Muller among the best forwards ever...think about that.

PLF, like most people you forget that Inter attacked Barcelona in the first leg. Chelsea parked the bus in both legs. I think they certainly have merits, but if all teams plays like this the stadium will be empty...

Pity, he was really really good football player.. Now its only Pele and Diego everywhere, and both arent smartest guys in the world, especially Pele...

But we got Messi :) He is perfect :BOP:

Gerd what do you think, will Messi score as much as now without Pep Guardiola?

What puts Messi in the real perspective is knowing he has served (by now) 29 assists this season, and he may probably be the best assister in Europe at the same time of being the best scorer.

And beyond the numbers, think of a guy who has the second best percentage of passing in La Liga after Xavi and who regularly plays as a playmaker, an AMC or a striker.

I think there has never been someine like him before, able to do as many things so brilliantly at the same time.

PS: Another interesting statistic, yesterday Messi was awarded his first penalty in La Liga 515 days after. Thats almost 2 seasons without being awarded a penalty committed to him. Can you believe it? That one is for the conspiration fools out there. think about this.

Like most people, you forget Milito's offside goals. Or the horrible handball call against Toure in the second leg.

I didn't, i only said that Inter did not only park the bus. Maybe you should learn to read other people's posts.

i was just trying to be objective.

The games against Inter was highly entertaining, even if I personally would have preferred Barca through. The games with Chelsea was boring.

Inter was brilliant, but defensive and prevailed in somewhat style. Chelsea parked the bus completely for 180+ minutes and got lucky. You might say I'm biased cause I'm a Spurs fan, but I don't particularly dislike Chelsea any more than I dislike Inter. They're both in the "I don't really care" category to be honest.
