English Premier League thread

I'm not sure abou Hughes after the Fulham saga...one thing is certain (and that might be the reason wy QPR hired him now): Hughes is the champion of the january transfer window. A couple of years ago FourFourTwo featured an article about the use(lessness) of the january window transfer..most clubs did bad business...the player bought in january rarely were long term successes. There was one notable exception: Mark Hughes at Blackburn and Manchester City...

Rodgers and Lambert are the prototype for the next generation of managers in the Premiership. Tactically astute and able to adapt their team to whoever they facing, particularly Lambert who seems to change formation 2-3 times each game.

Yesterday I saw Freiburg-Leverkusen for a few moments and I was impressed with that Papiss Cissé guy. Have never seen him before but now I realised what the fuzz was about. I think he would be perfect for the Magpies.

Well said.

Here's what I said in Transfers thread:

"Oh damn!! Is Demba Ba leaving?! If not, the rest of EPL needs to be scared now! 2 great goal-scorers now and Best and Amoebi providing depth. Newcastle seem to be for real and have to be respected now with yet another great purchase IF they're not selling Ba. I'm impressed!"

I also think their young striker Nile Ranger can have a good future IF he sorts out his stupid attitude. He's out on loan right now I think but quite talented in my opinion and can also be a good option to provide depth when he comes back.

Mark Ashley and co. aren't maybe AS Bad as many of us (especially myself) thought. Too early to tell still but at least they players they bring in from outside EPL are quality. So they have good scouting. Looks at their foreign purchases over past couple years. Many great ones!

A team that buys players like Cabaye and Ba (on a free) is doing extremely well in transfers. Don't forget that before that, they also had Tioté, José Enrique and Ben Arfa.

And Cissokho might also join them...

The players they are buying are young and hungry (compared to before their relegation when they bought the likes of Butt, Smith, Owen, Duff, players who'd seen it all and who could have been mentally tired.

Newcastle is a football crazy city, this is good for football...i also hope that Leeds United can return to the EPL one of these years...

Barton is a dick. Warnock is doing the right thing by not saying anything.

If I was Hughes I would get rid of Barton straight away, you really don't need players like that in your team.

I would too except I'd say Hughes is probably one of the few managers in the game strong enough to command the respect, attention, dedication and even loyalty from even the likes of Joey F'n Barton! And we all know when he IS committed and dedicated, he's willin to die on the pitch for his team, give his all and is actually a very effective midfielder.

So I see your point and generally agree but in this particular case, I think Hughes can actually get the best out of this piece of $hit so I don't think he should or would get rid of him. We shall see....

He plays upfront sometimes, but he doesn't get service or much help when he does. He always has to drop back quite a bit to win the ball or get something going then sort of disappears, not because he's playing shit, but no one is looking for him.

Yeah you are probably right, but it just seems like he can explode at any moment.

So at any moment he can say or do something that undermines you as a manager or risk the team moral.

But as you say if you have a committed Barton then he can be very good for the team......but then he will probably get sent off :PP

I think people are a litle bit harsh on Barton. That red card against Norwich was undeserved.
And about Warnock: he's as big an arse hole as Barton (if not more) and look at my post about his tactical ineptitude.
Warnock should have kept silent...in this one, i'm all for Barton (without being a fan).

Dempsey is one of the most underestimated players in the EPL.

the duce is loose baby!

i think also it is crazy how landon donavan steps into evertons side and immeidatley is there most dangerous player. Why he never did a full move to the EPL or better yet La Liga is beyond me. To me he would absolutley fit in at a top 5 club or even madrid or maybe a atheltico madrid. They guy is a bit of a puzzle. But back to beachryans comments, duce would absolutley improve all of the teams in the top 5. Especially arsenal. One of the most underated parts of his game is his work rate and defense.

It could be that everyone else there is kind of down though. Bad form, team not winning, it doesn't make players go out and work.
But he is a fast little bastard :D

Donovan isn't as good as he used to be though in my opinion and has actually lost some of his speed.

For me these days, Dempsey >>>> Donovan and I would agree that he can improve any team. Landon is good for a club like Everton though. In a bit of a slump, midtable at best and he's a good honest pro with lots of experience, good ability and great attitude.

I agree his hold no bars attitude is what arsenal needs...i would put him behind rvp. He probably £45k a week too. He was a target before sealing a deal w/ gervinho it was all over the papers at the time. I imagine seeing him get a hat-trick too .he seem loyal to fulham he' there best player

Agree on Dempsey, one of the more underrated players in the game.

Fulham have a couple of very good players: Dempsey, Hangeland, Zamora, Dembele, Ruiz...they should do better.

Watched parts of Chelsea-Man Utd.
I can't beleive that this ref was ever allowed to lead a WC final. This was amongst the worst refereeing i've ever seen. All the controversy is about the second half, well i scarcely watched it because i was busy. But IMO Webb already lost the plot in the first half.
It should be possible to replace a failing referee at half-time. Millions of people have watched this thrilling match and afterwards there is only one talking point: the ref. That is not good for football.

Besides that: players should not get the opportunity to influence refs like it happened yesterday and at most matches.

This match had all to be a show piece, but the ref prohibited that. That was a very, very bad performance mister Webb (and this from somebody who usually defends referees).

PS: i will not meddle in the discussions which team was advantaged, that is irrelevant IMO...the man simply had a complete day off, but it happens quite regularly with him.

What I learned this weekend is that if your English its OK to dive and con the ref.

I agree he had a shocking game. Both penalties were borderline decisions for me, totally changed the course of the game, and I thought at 3-0 Chelsea were home and dry. One of my mates (a Liverpool fan like 50% of this bloody city, and an ABU) was playing hell last night and posting that pic of Webb on Twitter which got Ryan Babel in hot water last year. Though I can't say too much about Webb, after all he did ref C****ff out of the playoff semi-final which stopped them meeting us at Wembley last season! :SMUG:

P.S. change of topic, and another shout for my beloved Jacks, come from behind to beat West Brom 2-1 at the Hawthorns in that loud pub team orange kit, and a wonderful 19-pass move for the winning goal! I was also very pleased with Gylfi Sigurðsson's performance, great loan signing, made one, scored one. Hope he continues playing like that and we stump up the money for a permanent deal. 10 points clear of the drop zone now, and getting positive remarks from the neutrals out there for finally turning our passing game into goals. Big game next week though against fellow in-form newly promoted Norwich City, who have also done well this season. Should be a cracker (and I'll be there) :)
