Arsenal Thread

Injury update, not looking good :(

Fabregas aggravated his hamstring, Szczesny dislocated finger, Walcott and Song out... Van Persie is still not 100% as we saw in Barcelona. And Vermaelen I don't even remember what he looks like... we're fucked. Going to Old Trafford in shambles.

Season falling apart, if things carry on like this soon we will be saying we have only the Premier League to focus on, in an effort to be optimistic. And then what?

PS: Wenger declared he's thinking about the emergency loan for a temporary GK. Imagine if, God forbid, somethings happens to Almunia?

Well then. Enjoy playing our, erm, maybe 3rd or 4th string team. With one recognised midfielder. Who is Darren Gibson.

What has happened to United?

I think something has to be done whether sack Wenger or i don"t know what!!!
If i would be in the place of Wenger i would sell Denilson,Diaby,Rosicky and Bendtner and buy expierianced and good plaers like Mexes, De Rossi and Hamsik!!
I am alredy geting used to it that Arsenal is loosing!!!

sack wenger. that fucker will never learn. wrong team, wrong subs, wrong tactics. wrong manager.

lets get morinho on board.fuck wenger and his philosophies.

Why would Mourinho come to Arsenal now? huh?

I understand your frustration though Jonny. I sympathize with you. But don't think we'll see Jose there any time soon bud.

That's ridiculous. Arsene has proven that with a level playing field, he'll always produce a team that is competitive and play good football. It's not his fault Chelsea and now City have been able to distort the league so much. Before it was enough to develop players and blood them over time, but since Abramovich came in that isn't possible.

If Arsenal get rid of Wenger, why would any international talents go there?

Poo plop!

Did we really play that poor against Utd today? not sure we did that bad at old trafford. Someone needs to teach them how to defend against quick counter attacks though, because it is getting ridiculous.

6 seasons of zip, but I have said it before and I say it again. People forget how hard it is to stay at the top of the premiership and to consistantly get into the champions league. Is it like 16 seasons in a row and I think nearly all of them if not all got through the group stages?

This is our record since we won the FA cup in the 2004-2005 season;

...............League.....................Champs........FA...........leaguecup.......

2010-2011.......2(at the moment)...........last16.......6thround........Final....

2009-2010.......3.........................Quarters.......4th round......Quarters

2008-2009.......4.........................Semis...........Semis.........Quarters

2007-2008.......3.........................Quarters.......5th Round......Semis

2006-2007.......4........................Last 16........5th Round.......Final

2005-2006.......4.........................Final..........4th Round.......Semis

So I think that shows consistancy (not consistantly bad :PP) especially in the champs league and the league. Credit needs to be given to Wenger, along with the New stadium finished in 2006 which Wenger hada big hand in.

Wenger is Arsenal and is not just another manager. Any other team would get rid of their manager, but any other team would still be shitter than Arsenal, apart from Man United and Chelsea. Liverpool changed their manager a couple of times in the last year or so, has it helped them that much? not really.

Everybody has written us off and we were supposed to be the first team in the top four to drop out of the top four. But Liverpool went out, now chelsea are struggling.

I really do think the thing missing from this team is the right mentality. Wwe shit ourselves in the big games and it needs to be remedied. I would definately get rid of Denilson and Diaby, Rosicky and probably Arshavin and just get in quality. Then I think we will be a force. We are not far away.

Get rid of Wenger and it will all fall apart, I am certain of that. Just as certain as all the ones that want Wenger to go are certain that that is the best solution.

Everybody is licking Tottenhams arse at the moment, but Arsenal have pissed all over them since the premiership started and last time I checked Spurs spent 100million more than us since the premiership started. So that highlights how well we have done on the budget we have aswell. I think we were really low on Net spend table that was going around about a year ago aswell, were we 11th or something?

I know I am flogging a dead horse here, but people need to wake up. They are acting like we have been facing relegation for the last 6 seasons! get a grip.

getting rid of wenger wont make arsenal fall apart. they are better managers out there then him. wenger is becoming an "average manager" nowadays.

Morinho would be the perfect replacement. he will injetc that winning mentality that you talking about bobby and a defence that can fucking defend for once and the tactical genius needed to win games unlike wenger who is the most one dimensional manager ever. playing keep ball, fancy cack even when your losing the game

Today was a fine example. we was 2:0 and instead of showing more eargency by either banging in the ball in the box or speeding up the pace of our play, we instead still made 10 passes between our defenders and midfielders before our forwards had sight of the ball.

pathetic and predictable. who's to blame for that? wenger of course. doesn't matter if fabregas or fucking xavi and messi was in our team, wenger would instruct messi to keep passing the ball to our defenders instead of forwards when your 2:0 down.

Bobby you keep defending him as if he is god at arsenal. he is not. i think you and some arsenal fans are scared of change. scared of getting rid of wenger in fear we will go backwards. we may do if we sack him but at the same time we may go forwards and start winning things again.

bobby you seem like a man that doesnt liek taking risks in life. people who take risks in life sometimes are the ones that are better off then some. You have got to take risks in life osmetimes for you to be succesfull and imo, sacking wenger could be the best thing that has happened for arsenal for a long time.

who cares about past glory, the past is the past. we need to be talking about the future and mr wenger is not the future and needs to go end of the season if he cant deliver us the league.

Bobby, another thing. WE ARE FAR away from winning things. very very far. dont get mislead by us finining in the top 4 all the time. yea its good achievement compared to teams finishing below us but finishing in the top 4 dont win you trophies and in the history of football, you are remembered for trophies. not league positions. i am sure there has been a similar premiership team that has consistantly finished in the top 4 before but do people remember that team that "nearly" won something? of course not.

will people, 10 years in the future remember arsenal the team that finished in teh top 4 consistantly? hell no. they will remember united wining trophies, barcelona winning trophies etc etc. no one gives a fuck about "2nd" place so to speak.

And about replacing team members with quality players, what fucking world you live in? wake teh fuck up. wenger dont buy quality "ready made" players. he buys 10 year olds. This is yet ANOTHER reason why wenger needs to go because he is a stubborn old bastard that wont buy quality players but instead rely on fucking denilsion and diaby to do the job.

I just think Wenger gambles on the wrong things. We needed a GK and a CB to cover our injuries. Wenger knew there was a chance Vermaelen wouldn`t be fit. He didn`t want to have too many at his disposal and for the record about our backs I do believe we let in less goals than any other team in the league.

Watching Denilson today and the commentators actually laughing at him was embarrassing . Denilson and Diaby slow down the game so much Manutd were allow to access what passes were going to be made. If we our afraid to spend and take risk we`re no closer to winning anything. I`m proud of what Wenger has done ,but even I can`t keep my wife at bay with only memories. Movies n dinner is required every once n a while.

Keep Wenger just remove his blanket ffs!

Mate I remember winning stuff with George graham and they were great times. But I went to quite a few games then and was bored to tears watching them.

The only name you mention is Mourinho? anybody else, because the likely hood of him coming to us is nil. I wouldn't want him either, I want to play good football and win, which I think will happen sooner rather than later.

I don't mind taken risks mate, when they are calculated risks. You say there are much better managers than Wenger out there, but how many of those better managers will come to us?

The chances of a new manager making us better are much slimmer than a new manager making us shitter imo. If we dont get into the champions league we make no money, then top players will not want to come to us, then the downward spiral begins. It is so fragile, that is why what Wenger has done in the last 6 seasons isn't as shit as you are making it out to be, ask Liverpool fans?

You are obsessed with what everybody else thinks of us. Who cares what people think of us in 10 years time?

I am happy with being patient for a few more years if it means we maintain what we have and build on it. This team is not far away from being great, we just need to improve our periphery players like Diaby and Denilson.

Our first team is as good as anybodies when they are fit. We just don't have enough hunger and quality on the bench to fill in when needs be. That is our problem. Also mentaly we have a big problem, this is why winning the league cup would have been so important for us.

We have no god given right to win anything Jonney, there are 20 teams in the premiership, we are one of the top teams, we are also classed as one of the top teams in the world because of our performances and consistancy in the champions league. Also the way we are run and respected in football is high on my priorities. Alot of where Arsenal are today is because of Wenger.

You mentioned what we did today when we were 2-0 down and passing it around, what else did you want them to do? Man United had everyman in their box, do you want them to waste the ball and give Man United possesion back by hoofing long balls up the pitch? I have seen past Arsenal teams do that and on the whole it does not work at all.

We need to improve defending but to suggest that Wenger is past it is laughable.

If all of us were like you jonney we may get mourinho, win a few things, then the manager will leave, then we will not win anything, then get another manager in, then another. Until we are one of those teams that sack a manager after a season because they didn't win anything and have about 10 managers in as many seasons. because we have a hunger for winning at any cost.

I am not a fan like that, I appreciate what Wenger has done for us. I can see he still has more to offer us and I can see this team needs tweaking here and there and we could be great.

You don't see that and thats you opinion of course, but I greatly disagree :DD

The funny part is you both make great points! It's hard not to see the viewpoint you both offer. Both are valid in my opinion.

On one hand, I totally understand jonny's frustration and impatience at this point (After all, It's been awhileeeeee since Arsene and Arsenal won anything, it's not like it's 1 or 2 years) and sympathize with him and at the same time, what Bobby says makes great sense and I find myself siding with him. Problem is, these little 'tweaks' that are needed don't seem to ever properly get done by Wenger. Yes, Arsenal may only have 2 or 3 missing pieces of a great big puzzle but somehow, Arsene doesn't seem to be aware of them as well as some of us are and do what's needed to take care of those pieces. Even when he's done it, it hasn't been fully convincing and some of the problems have remained for years.

I think sacking him would most likely take Arsenal back rather than further to be honest and would be against that. He has been doing a good job given the resources he's had compared to others. At the same time, the man certainly has his faults and I blame him for Arsenal's lack of silverware and weak mentality and many of his decisions as well as I applaud and appreciate him for having turned the team into the world-wide appealing brand that it's become being respected and recognized among the top teams in the world without of course ever actually being THE top team (Except years ago with Pires and co. ) which I also can understand why it frustrates some sections of the fans.

It's a really interesting debate this one actually. Because like a coin, it has two sides and both are very real and valid. I find myself on the fence even at times though overall I am leaning more towards continuous patience with Wenger and giving him more time to deliver.

I'm 70% - 30% in terms of sticking with Wenger but he needs to know that time is ticking and that even people who support him right now like me won't stick around forever! And that with each passing year and lack of silverware, our patience with him is growing thin!

ya lot are lucky having a manager like wenger.no one will do a better job than him.ya lot play the best football in the league.just missing that final peice in the jigsaw.sack him?"you dont know what ya got, till its gone" comes to mind

agree with Misfit...guys this happends, why don´t you judge after the season is over?

imo Arsenal are lacking true leader, it´s not Fabregas and you have no player to take responsibility..not even Van Persie.. Arsenal last time had this man in Henry and before him Viera.. you need to invest in players that are perfect already...not in kids trying to make them perfect.. this way you always play great fast football but the lack of experience and leadership is visible...

Well here we are again wondering if our season has fallen apart and coming to the moment when we ask where it all went wrong.

I think sacking Wenger is not the solution, but the board certainly needs to pressure him a lot more and even interfere with this work more. As in, "we still let you choose the signings but this time we are fucking well signing big names"! I think the board has to listen a bit more to Usmanov's line of thinking in this regard.

When it comes to the playing aspect of our failure, to me this defeat to United showed very clearly what we lack. People are talking about hunger and efficient defending, and it pretty much boils down to both things.

We didn't play terribly, we even laid siege on United's box in many occasions. But they weather the storm because:
a) World Class goalkeeper - Van der Sar had a man of the match performance today, made incredible saves and showed the confidence that none of our current keepers will ever be able to.
b) Quality at defending - they not only have Vidic and other top quality defenders, but they defend in such a systematic and organised manner, it is difficult to break in. It's much more kudos to their defense rather than poor attacking from us.
c) They have hunger and SOLIDARITY - once again you see Rooney busting his guts, helping defence. You see them defending with 8 in the box during times of real pressure. That's organisation and discipline. Arsenal, on the other hand, throw themselves all at attack at the expense of defending. The team is very unbalanced, as it gets severely exposed at the back. Why did we have to take initiative like that? It's "kamikaze" sometimes! See how United scored their goals. Both on the counter! Caught us with our pants down. We had like 3, 4 at the most, defending against those goals. Hell, if we found that kind of openness, RVP and Nasri would score a brace each! No one plays against us the way we play them.
Which leads me to the last point: we have some leeches in our squad, that's clear as day. Most notably Denilson and Diaby, they're fucking passengers.
While United have their attackers helping defense, our side has the ones who were supposed to be defending not giving a fuck! Watch Denilson jogging in the build up to that second goal, when he was supposed to be covering for Gibbs. There was an Avenue for Rafael there. Yet Denilson couldn't be bothered, the fucker. Only 22 years old, he was supposed to be flying up and down that pitch.
Arsene Wenger obviously is at fault with this. Season in season out, we have the same leeches, the same problems. He's clearly not giving those twats the good proper bollocking they deserve. Therefore, he's to be held responsible too. The team reflects its manager, and Arsenal seems resigned when things don't go as expected. There's no fight in there.
Denilson and Diaby, too lazy, too slow, too fucking mediocre to be playing in an Arsenal shirt. Enough of that.
Arsenal and AW need a serious kick up the arse really.

Nice post, well said.

I don't believe Wenger should be sacked, no way! But there are a LOT of things that ARE his fault!

Every team is a reflection of their manager's. And the reason Man Utd wins so much is because it directly reflects Sir Alex's winning attitude and burning desire to be #1 and nothing else! Wenger doesn't really have that same drive. He does his things and then 'hopes' they work out. But not with same conviction as Sir Alex does it.

Sad to say this but at the end of the day, you gotta agree, Wenger is simply not as big a 'winner' as Fergie is and it's no surprise that you can see that attitude in most of their players/team as well. Arsenal as a whole (apart from a few players) don't have that winning mentality and drive and do look resigned at times. Ferguson's players very rarely do that. It's all about discipline. It's clear that the United players are a lot more scared of what Fergie will say or do to them after the match than Arsenal's players are about Wenger. United players are to be held accountable much more and Wenger's leniency and tolerance of mediocre performances from some 'average' players who he's brought in and even stuck by regardless of never showing they are good enough are some of the primary reasons, this team wasn't mean to be #1 but rather among the top teams in top 4 places.

For me, it really does come down to the personality and ambition of the manager himself. And if you think about the drive and personality of someone like Fergie or Mourinho and you compare them to Wenger, it becomes perhaps much more evident why Arsenal doesn't finish 1st as often as those two's teams do.

eh?wenger has got more league titles than chelsea.2nd most successful coach in england.wenger's the only one to go unbeaten all season.a feat not even ferguson or mourinho can and will ever achieve.lets face it,arsenal werent poor yesterday.van der sar and almunia were the diffrences.why koscielny wasnt tracking fabio,i dont know.enough of the knee jerk.you guys might win the league.had my money on day one for ya lot to win it.i for one wouldnt be surprised.and finally, football will be the winner.

ps:agree on the leader thingy though.somebody to rile players up...

I totally agree with everything. The problem of Wenger are a lot of little details and things that worsen the overall view, when actually the team is better and plays better than it seems.

It lacks those little details that make a good team into a competitive team. That's the problem. Thay need some big players (big in mentality) in key positions.

There are other competitions besides the Premiership, as I said I doubt any other top club manager would be around after six seasons of nothing...

I'm completely with Bobby.
And i think especially the comparision with Spurs says it all. Arsenal's team is much cheaper and better...

I think Wenger is 100% the right person for Arsenal and sacking him would cause Arsenal to probably drop in to were Liverpool are right now. Wenger doesn't have money which is something people seem to keep forgetting and on top of that he's probably one of the best at spotting cheap talent and on top of that he's doing what's best for Arsenal rather than a short term job for him and moving on which could leave a club in trouble like Mourinho does.

Wenger DOES need to alter his philosophy though cause him trying to create Barcelona MK2 isn't going to work as unfortunately he doesn't have the youth set-up Barcelona has or the pool talent of Barcelona. The Invincibles is EASILY one of the best teams I've seen and would probably be give this current Barcelona team a great game compared to other recent sides but the reason for that is? Seaman/Lehmann, Campbell, Cole, Keown, Dixon were all top defenders and its something Wenger seems to have a bit of trouble with.

I think Arsenal could do with a "bit" of a shake-up like appointing someone like Steve Clark or Carlos Queiroz as assistant and having them have complete control of the defensive side and let Wenger focus on what he does best and thats the attacking side of his side. I think that kind of balance is what they need and someone the players will probably fear a bit more when it comes to defensive calamities.

Exactly mate. I think the exact same thing as you, but didn't put it to words. Wenger is too complacent, protects his players too much and chanels all the responsibility to himself. Fergie, on the other hand, must be feared in the dressing room. Remember the boot kicked towards Beckham :P well, don't need to be so extreme, but you get the idea.
As for Mourinho, he has an excellent relationship with his players and he apparently wins them over naturally, so the guys are loyal to him. Add to this the fact that Mourinho is a brilliant tactician, while Wenger is less daring in his changes. Very one-dimensional, as it's been said here.

But Mourinho doesn't have to be a role model. He plays the most competitive, but it's not attractive football.

It's enough to take a look at Barcelona to point out what's lacking at Arsenal. Mind you, I'm focusing on the tactics point of view (the sheer quality of the players is, of course, unparalleled). The point is, Barca are a balanced and disciplined team, while still playing pleasant-to-watch footie. Sergio Busquets is a real workhorse who does very well the holding midfielder role (ok, we have Song, who's great). But also you see Xavi and Iniesta everywhere in the pitch, everyone pushes up field to pressure the opposition in their own half and even Messi and the other attackers take a part on this. So, you see, even the geniuses do the dirty work.
When you compare that to Arsenal, well... Not even our chumps Denilson and Diaby are doing their share of the "dirty work", then why would Arshavin bother?

One last thing I forgot to mention here about Denilson's game. People were pointing out a match where he completed 100% of his passes. But let's face it, pay attention to his passing and you see why: mostly backwards passing and passes played to a safe zone. His passes are predictable and quite easy to read. Those commentators laughing at him are probably right. He hardly ever tries a through ball, something with more vision, and when he does he misses it. So he stays safe, avoiding responsibility and not showing up.

I don't wanna sound repetitive criticizing the same players, but take a look at Jack Wilshere's hunger, personality and sheer quality, and you'll understand why he is well ahead of our chumps in the pecking order, despite being only 19 years old. After all, there's no excuse for being a youngster. If you're good, you're good. If you're not, you get found out.

I don't think Wenger would be sacked, but I could honestly see him walking.

He looked absolutely beaten against us, and it's yet another season of it, perhaps he needs a break.

Some simple minds in here with brilliant feedback , cheers! Wenger did looked beaten n bruise hopefully that would do enough to break him into a new man!

Just 1 match per week now hopefully rotation won`t be needed I never would of thought Song`s role was so vital. I would love Vermaelen to be fit for at least 5 matches.

The one mistake Wenger makes is that he relies too much on French players.
I'm not convinced by the likes of Diaby and Squilacci.

The fact that Arsenal have plenty of injured players is also something to take into consideration...is there something wrong with Arsenal's medical staff or does Wenger has a tendency to buy vulnerable players?

Sacking Wenger and appointing a manager like Mourinho could be disastrous in the long term. Arsenal's unique selling proposition is their attractive football. After the Nick Hornby generation (the fans who were fond of boring Arsenal), Arsenal has won lots of new fans over because they play good attractive football. With a coach like Mourinho and less attractive football, Arsenla risk to loose lots of these new fans (and you can't call them glory hunters in Arsenal's case).

Dont get me wrong I think Arsene needs to wise up big time. He needs to realise alot of things and make important decisions before next season.

But honestly hand on heart I think our outfield first team is as good as anybodies. If we had this team completely fit, then I think we could go alot further.

Sagna Djouru Vermaelen Clichy

.........Song...............
.....Fab.........Wilshere

Walcott...............Nasri/Arshavin

.........Van Persie..............

We just need to get rid of Denilson and Diaby, maybe rosicky and Bendtner. Then get in quality, our defence is good, especially with koscuielny backing up. Just need another great winger imo and a good replacement for song and then we are well on our way.

I really dont agree that our team is shit. most of teh games we have lost this season (apart form barca) we have dominated possession and shots on goal. We just need that winning mentality and to finish the many chances we have.

So to tell me we are shit etc just doesn't cut the mustard. We have a good team, it is far away from the best team in the world, but with a few tweaks the squad could be really really good.

Wenger does need to wise up, but I do think even if we dont win things in the next two years eventually it will all click, that is why I am patient. I can stand getting in the top four qualifying for the champs league and doing well in it etc. This steady management will pay dividends in the end.

just because we won things, doesn't mean we should win all of the time. Our team was depeleted, it takes time to get a team back to the top again.

I still think if Chelsea hadn't got the money they did when they did we would have dominated the league for the next few years. Its all ifs and buts. But Man United couldn't handle us at the time, they were resorting to kicking us in games and we were getting better and better. Chelsea didn't beat us for years etc etc. We were well on the way to being a dominant force. Then Chelsea got the money and dominated for the years we probably would have done, just bad luck.

We couldn't compete financially with chelsea, Man United or Liverpool. Even Tottenham and other teams, yet we were still one of the top teams in the league and still are.

We have our new stadium, we are now in a healthy financial situation, we have a team that is not far off of being a really good team. So please tell me where the crisis is? tell me why Wenger needs to be sacked? it's ridiculous.

Morinho would be the perfect replacement. he will injetc that winning mentality that you talking about bobby and a defence that can fucking defend for once and the tactical genius needed to win games unlike wenger who is the most one dimensional manager ever. playing keep ball, fancy cack even when your losing the game

Mourinho also gets £100m war chests for every team he's joined in the last few years.
