Arsenal Thread

As long as the other big teams are loosing points there is hope, even after a loss against Chelsea...it's too soon to loose hope now.
I'm not convinced by United, Chelsea, Man City or Spurs...so why could Arsenal not win the title?

Because I know this Arsenal team, I wouldn't be suprised if we lose or draw against Stoke, mentally this team is pretty weak and losing big games like this has a psychological effect on them. So Losing against Chelsea at home will be even shitter than yesterday.

I hope I am wrong and of course there is always a chance when others are losing games and dropping points. But MAn United and Chelsea are both mentally tougher than us and they will deal better with the latter part of the season when it comes to the crunch.

Just imo of course, but I have no faith in this teams consistancy at the moment and to win the league you have to be consistant for a long period. So an Unbeaten run or a long winning run preferably, is what we need, but I can't see us doing it at the moment.

you sound broken bob.... mentally yh ,but there is more surprises to come in this season. We done some amazingly good wins on the road. I agree fully with gerd, 5 loses sitting in 2nd. We have the most wins n loses  cmon Arsenal a lil more effort n push to the top.

I agree that your home form has been dodgy, but you should beat Stoke. With the type of attacking players you have (the likes of Nasri, Walcott, Arshavin, T'chamakh) you should win.

12-18 months ago ago you had pretty massive weakspots (goalie, defensive midfielder, center back, physical striker) with the signings you've made there arent anything like the same weaknesses. Admittedly you could do with a top class defensive midfielder, and given the Vermaelen injuries another top class center back. Look at the keeper, the boy Woijcht Szezency could be a real gem. I know some people think his kicking is a little off, but he can improve that, or absolute worst case even get the left back to kick for him. His shot stopping is immense and the sheer frame of him means he can cover most of the goal. Chamackh is looking like a very good striker. The other thing is the massive debt from the stadium move is nearly at an end, soon you'll be able to compete on a more even field, and you might be able to sign a few more top class players.

i cant see us winning the title. we are shit. time and time again we fail to deliver when its needed and as soon as we get barcelona or real madrid drawn in the champions league thats the end of that competition too as like i and bob said. we ALWAYS fail to deliver against the top teams.

chelsea's revival will begin at the emirates. you just watch and see

How many long balls can this side send . Rooney`s missed pen say it all a harsh pen at that. We defended well I thought , our starting line up was shocking. What for the life of me can not get is Fletcher runs to web and pushes him and not even see yellow. Mutd won but they don`t play good football they look like a Bolton side of old.

But this is bad for football. As a neutral, you can enjoy watching teams like Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea (last season and at the beginning of the season), and even lesser teams who can play attractive football (Sevilla, Deportivo, Ajax and Red Star Belgrade come to my mind, although this is all some years ago). What is attractive about the football of Man Utd? Watching paint dry or grass growing is more exciting than watching Man Utd play football...On top of that this seems the weakest Man Utd side since Ferguson took over.

Nevertheless: well done United i suppose.

Come on, that's totally over the top. If we're so boring and play like Allardyce's Bolton then how the hell have we scored more goals than everyone else in the league despite playing games?

Ferguson knows if you sit back and stifle Arsenal and then hit them fast on the break you can beat them, it works everytime. Like Bob said, we change our tactics to beat the opposition, Arsene doesn't.

The only long balls played were quick goal kicks from VdS to Rooney trying to catch the Arsenal centrebacks off guard, and it was quite effective without resulting in a goal. We played some lovely quick passing moves and some good stuff on the counter-attack and if it hadn't been for Arsenal's cynical fouling as we broke away we might have scored more. There was a prolonged period in the first half where our entire team bar VdS were camped in your half of the pitch too, your assessments are really inaccurate.

Dont forget if Rooney had scored his penalty and Nani or Anderson had scored their easy chances then we'd be talking about an absolute drubbing. Arsenal had one really good chance and a couple of minor ones and that's it. Both teams gave the ball away a lot but you came up short against the best back 6 in the league and we got a lucky but overall deserved winning goal.

If SAF had came out with the comments Wenger did people would call him graceless and accuse him of lacking class in defeat etc etc etc, so boring.

I wasn't speaking about the match against Arsenal (i haven't seen it). I was speaking in general and certainly this season.
I really enjoyed Man Utd in the Cantona era, but since 1999 they are seldom good to watch IMO. They remind me of the Bayern unich team of the 70's: a very good and very succesfull team, but not very memorable...
But, like i said, silverware is all that counts in the end and Man Utds have tons of silverware...

Oh okay, I still disagree that we have been boring in those 10 years but I do kinda know what you mean because the Cantona era was very 'romantic' (it's probably my favourite time) and I know how you like your romanticism and utopia in football. :)

I`m not sure if this will be a top dialogue...more like convincing toads n frogs aren`t the same. Last night style is not what I call a thriller. Long balls from Rio whether it was technical or whatever it`s called in your book of Mutd classy foot work. And you describe everyone of Arsenal behind the ball for about What ? 30 seconds = 20 min. Rooney was the only one down the pitch to receive the balls. When Tottenham visited the Emirates that was a thriller that`s footy at it`s best. When Arsenal won the FA Cup many years ago I was happy but also, ashamed on those tactics. No doubt Mutd did what needed to be done the backs did exceptional. So, if rooney,If nani ,and If Anderson if`s ...if`s ....is not the point. Scoreline was 1-0 and that pen was wrong , but that acrobatics attempt of a penalty was funny. Rooney  I thought he was going to run in circles before he shot that ball. Either way jumbo your logic is tainted w/ Mutd a good passing side.

I dont remember saying it was a thriller and I already said that we changed our game in order to beat you, conceding possession in the second half and constantly hitting you on the counter-attack, it was hardly anti-football ala Rangers.

I was at the match and I've watched it again since, you had the ball and didnt do a lot with it, when we got it we attacked with far more intent and had far better chances, I'm happy with that.

I'm not saying we're Barcelona but calling us Bolton is pure sour grapes.

sour grapes? You know me better than that jumbo! sour grapes  I don`t subscribe to the sour grapes factor. Far more intent? ... fine have a nice day Jumbo. Noted , better chances counts for something . btw changed your tactics was my opinion of the Bolton side we use to face.

All your chances were short passing around for a bit and then eventually a (usually weak) shot from distance that trickled wide or straight to VdS. The only decent ones were when Nasri's shot was spilled but Chamakh was too slow to react and Chamakh's header.

We had the goal, the penalty, Rafael's tricky run in the box, Anderson's 1-on-1 (great save by the way, Schmeichel-esque), Nani's scissor volley, Nani's from the edge of the 6 yard box where he robbed Clichy, Rooney's lob (another great save) and a few other half chances and all the times we broke at pace only to be tripped half way towards your goal.

That's more intent for me.

ok maybe a frog and the toad are the same. When I "?" for intent... I wanted to point out the difference, small passes and a cross into the box compare to long ball and taking shots could very look like intent. You showing me every chance at intent means I`m not coming across well. I was disappointed in the tactics used I rather watch a game btw 2 top sides (hence my comparison of FA CUP `05) . Even when we lost at the bridge it was a game of delight even though we lost. You though !come out with Mutd was better cause of intent. And play good passing game. Maybe it`s me... I saw Arsenal lose to Newcastle with 1 shot on goal. I`m not impress with intent ...again that`s me. We did agree your tactics change let`s see if it works on chels. Soon long throws into the box might come next (jk)

in Romania we use the term "autobaza" = park the your bus in front of goal. very glorious tactics for home matches nonetheless.
arsenal was scared, drained of ideas, pradictable. but, we attacked, we tried. to sit back and then break with 3-4 quick players agains 3 of our defenders and to claim it as an achievement is just silly. off course you'd have more chances.
this view is too pragmatic, almost cynical.
not to say that arsenal is getting old with this type of play. there no one to provide good medium passes, not to mention long ones. and why the hell RvP was in the midfield all the time? my oppionion on our cb: (good) second hand material.

I dont think we did that, there's a difference between parking the bus and absorbing pressure then countering. We didn't play for a draw or damage limitation etc, we played to win whilst containing Arsenal's passing game and did it to perfection. Carrick was vital in blocking the passing lanes and closing down the angles to prevent you from weaving triangles in dangerous areas whilst the back four were immense at stopping anything that slipped through.

Like I said before, we could quite realistically have won 3-0. I'm not talking about if we'd played higher up the pitch or a different approach, I'm saying if certain players kept their cool and controlled their finish one on one with the keeper then it's 3/4-0 and we've smashed you. Chelsea play very similarly against you too. You don't park the bus and win 3-0.

In our matches against Rangers they had a total of 10 shots compared with our 35. We dominated both matches but only scored 1 goal from a penalty and this is because they parked the bus with 9 men behind the ball almost all the time and only 1 or 2 when they attacked.

In the match last night we had 17 shots and you had 11, plus we had more corners.

You believe whatever if it makes you feel better, but at the end of the day you came up short. Again.

 Arsenal didn't have any intent at all I felt, they basically had a extremely slow tempo to their passing and basically just passed it sideways until they got bored and had a crack at goal.

We probably played a part in you lot not looking interested but it doesn't change the fact we had far more chances and deserved to win by a bigger margin even when we weren't at our best.

I think Arsenal takes defeats harder because they know they could've done much better. I felt like breaking my telly when Song wasted a 3 vs 2 counter with the stupidest pass you'll ever see. Also, Arshavin was a sack of shite, Fabregas (ok, cut him some slack for coming back just now) was innocuous, Sagna was bellow critic... The whole team was nervous. Curiously enough, the most serene, sober and confident player seemed to be 19-year-old Szcesny (did I spell it right?)
This guy certainly has what it takes! And not in the same way as Fabianski's never fulfilled potential... I mean, he showed it all. Maybe it's too soon to say, I don't want to spoil it, but he does look promising.

United didn't play jack shit for brief periods in the 2nd half (and their supporters knew it, given their reaction) but it still meant fuck all when it comes to Arsenal stepping up and seizing the opportunity. Once again, there weren't enough shots on goal. Deserved defeat.

BTW, no grudges held against United, but Ferdinand and especially Fletcher are REAL scumbags. Hope they get theirs.

He appeared to barge into the ref, Howard Webb, in the first half when Song didn't get a yellow card.

On the point about Man Utd's tactics, yes it was counter-attacking, but even compared to say 2009 (the semi finals) their counter attacking in Salford on Monday night seemed to be very direct and one-dimensional (i.e. hoof the ball to Rooney). At the Emirates in 2009 (Champions League), their counter attacking was at least based around a degree of mobility, they would tend to hit low passes and use players like Ronaldo to break down the flanks.

The division is more unpredictable this year so the race is not over by any stretch.

Fabregas and van Persie are missing which is crucial.

However there is a need for a really competent defensive midfielder like a Mascherano and centreback who commands. None of the incumbents or Vermaelen convince.

Sczecny has potential but a more experienced head could be useful.

Given this January perhaps ?

appeared? he did barge the ref

It certainly looked that way, but I didn't see the whole replay - the replay seemed to cut away at the end.

In a way Webb's lack of response to being barged was as bad as the barge itself, this sort of thing, the erosion of the line between contesting a decision and being overly aggressive to refs, is what encourages amateur players to attack Sunday league refs.

Old Trafford isn't in Salford.

Yeap I was wondering when did they play in Salford

The scumbags: Fletcher is a hot-head who's constantly bullying the opposition more aggressively than normal, but when someone roughs him up a bit for a change he does what you all saw him doing (and that wasn't even the case, Song didn't do nothing). The incident was even worse than Ballack barging the ref in that "fucking disgrace" game against Barca. It was a real shocker that he didn't see at least yellow.
As for Ferdinand, well you saw the karate kick that ripped Sagna's shirt. That was totally over the top and unnecessary and he had the nerve to say that he was only going for the ball.

On another note, Wenger should control his nerves during interviews and just admit that the team didn't perform well enough, the turf has nothing to do with it. If we're to be beaten at the Emirates, he would have to find a different excuse.

Arsenal have a lot of talent in forward positions but nearly all of them don't have the hunger to win the ball back when the other team has it, I think nowadays its as important to have as many players chasing shadows at all times. Its the reason Barcelona are so special and when you look at United on Monday, the front 4 of Rooney,Park,Nani and Anderson they all showed massive desire to win the ball back when you lot had it compared to your lot

What do you think there are rumours that Mertesacker could be heading to Arsenal!?I personally would like this!Someone with hight power and good diffence!
BUT it would not have knowing Wenger!!
He would not buy defender when he already bought two in the summer!

I agree on the most part with Jumbo, except his 'ifs' bit and winning 3-0. If 'if's' were reality, Arsenal would win most matches 20-3.

We were crap and it should just be acknowledged and Man United played better and did have better chances, there is no way out of that. Wenger made himself look silly with the pitch comment.

Anyway, I'm a bit happier now, so we better beat Stoke at the weekend or I might self harm....;))
