Arsenal Thread

Bendtner (still) isn't good enough. Not only he doesn't complement the others but he can ruin our attacks in a bad day.

He's a bit of an enigma. Scored and got an assist vs Cardiff but he still doesn't convince. Personally I think he plays better as a second striker. His first touch is often clumsy so as a post player he's can be found wanting.

He's got a real eye for a pass though which is overlooked IMO. See the assist for Van's goal on Monday.

Re: The Bendtner thing (from Mediawatch)

For some reason, Nicklas Bendtner is a difficult player to like. Perhaps it's the pink boots. Perhaps it's the way he whined to the referee when he had a row with Emmanuel Adebayor last year. Perhaps it's just the suspicion that he's not as good as he thinks he is.

But just how good does he actually think he is? That's a question being asked a lot this week after the Arsenal striker was quoted as saying to The Daily Mirror:

''I should start every game, I should be playing every minute of every match and always be in the team.''

Strong stuff. And there was more:

'''I've never seen Arshavin. I did not watch Euro 2008. I've no idea what sort of player he is.'''

The newspaper was savage in its appraisal, branding Bendtner 'arrogant' as it mockingly headlined him declaring 'I'm Arsenal's best striker'.

'Bendtner is unpopular with Arsenal fans and his outburst is likely to be met with disbelief,' it added for good measure.

In that at least, there is no argument because, after enduring two days of ceaseless slagging on internet forums and the like, a story appeared on the Arsenal website yesterday titled 'Bendtner: I'm upset and annoyed by reports'.

"None of it was said like that," the player complained. "Basically I did a long interview for the Danish press recently, they asked me a lot of questions and the press over here have taken my answers and twisted them out of proportion. I was happy with the article in the Danish magazine and if you saw it you would realise that what was reported over here was not true."

And upon that invitation, Mediawatch popped off to the Danish press to find the interview in question, conducted by newspaper BT on February 9.

Although we're somewhat reliant on Babelfish's translation service, the quotes from that interview do have an uncanny resemblance to those in the Mirror. There is, though, a rather subtle difference in the quotes attributed:

"I still believe that when I play to my best, I will play from the start no matter who is ready or injured and each time I try to show that I should play from the start."

Note the similarity but also the added qualifications. It's not quite the arrogant boast as depicted in the Mirror, is it?

And what of the Arshavin reference? Does Bendtner really not "know what sort of player he is"? Well, if the translation service is trustworthy, then Bendtner's answer ran along the lines of: "I was not at the European Championships so I did not see him play but I have heard that he is a good player and if Arsenal are paying £12m, and other top clubs were after him, then it is because he can do something."

All in all, then, it would seem that a considerable fuss has been generated over some fairly reasonable quotes. Does it matter? Perhaps not. But then again, the next time the media in general complains about their lack of access to players and the absence of co-operation, perhaps they ought to wonder why footballers are so increasingly reluctant to open up.

I feel a bit sorry for him now, almost every football fan in the country will have him down as an ignorant, arrogant tit now, when he's been badly misquoted by the stupid bloody newspaper. Arseholes.

What time do the EPL games come on usually for the US? I've been trying to watch the Gooners for a couple of weeks now, but never could match up the times.

thats to be expected though, thats his first game in how long? denilson's decent, hes just not ready to play week in week out; he needs some experience alongside him.

epl matches go from 7:30, 10, and 12:30 on saturdays.

7:30 and 11 on sundays and in the midweek at 2:45. thats eastern timezone, just minus 5 hours off of the english times.

Maybe the FA Cup and that's it. And let's see how far we can get in the CL. The lads could upset the odds and go further than expected.

Arsha was quality in his first 30 minutes. I liked especially that shot with his left foot and his perfect cross to Bendtner. But their keeper was on fire!

About Bendtner, I wasn't aware of these articles. But if I ever read the quotes on Daily Mirror I would never believe it. To me, he seems anything but arrogant. The lad's got a lot to learn and his only 21. I think he will be an important player in the next few years.

Normally 10am or 1230pm on Fox Soccer Channel. I'm back in Dallas in two weeks, and that's how i'll be keeping up with the Premier League and our toothless challenge.

WTF has happened to the gooners....

I will tell you what has happened. Too many players have been sold or let go and not enough quality brought in. We currently have 2 players in central mid who know they will play every week if fit and they both pass sideways. We miss Cesc sooo much. We have no creativity in central midfield and its hurting us badly. The irony is we have tightened up at the back but now cannot score for toffee....

5th place is looking likely now....:COAT:

It's something I never thought I'd say, but I really hope you guys get 4th. Villa breaking up the top 4 would be great in some ways, but I fear it would mean a seriously big deal to Arsenal. Cesc and Ade, maybe even RVP would look to leave. Perhaps even Arsene too. The premier league needs Arsenal, the young, attacking arrogant lot that they are. Chelsea are a monolith, Liverpool reasonably well despised and United universally hated. Arsenal are like the last 'good guys' team.

Ugh, feel nauseous from admitting that. Oh if you get up to challenging United for top spot again, fear not, I'll change my tune. :)

I keep changing my tune but I now look at your squad and think it aint all that bad. you need a partner for Fabregas and CB. otherwise your sorted. The key to a title winning team is 2 teams.

-----RVP/Vela------------Ade/Eduardo
Nasri/Rosi--NS*/Den-Fab/Willsh----Walcott/Arsha
Clichy/Silv--NS*/Toure--Gallas/Djouru--Sagna/Troare
---------------Almunia/Fabianski----------

Aint all that bad! :))

I agree, you've been hit badly by injuries to key players and the squad seems to be low on confidence and suffering from a loss of motivation. At the moment, Wenger is struggling to deal with these but we all know how quickly football can change, and he's proven hiself enough for you to have faith he can sort this out.

You're squad is arguably better than Liverpool's and definitely better than Villa's, it's just a case of getting it to all click into place.

Players like Diaby, Song, Denilson and Bendtner have all got the potential to be great players, they are just have a dip at the moment and this is why they (along with Eboue) are getting all the stick. Fabregas, Nasri, Walcott, Vela and co. are some of the most promising young players in Europe, with a few more experienced heads and leaders the team could be really phenomenal.

Sometimes things have to get worse before they get better, as long as you can retain your key players, maybe finishing 5th wouldn't be so bad. Have heart, look at Bayern & Milan for two recent examples of teams failing to qualify for the CL and then acting on it and improving.

Indeed. It's easy to forget that the squad does have a lot of quality in it and that we have been raped by injuries this year.

Ade, Walcott, Fabregas, Eduardo & Rosicky could potentially all start in the same team. I'm sure if we had all of them fit we'd be at least 4th.

To push on though we need to solve our midfield issues and bolster the defence, although we have been defending a lot better recently. The only major absentee from last season's team (which was top for about half the season) is Flamini, which goes to show how much we've missed him, but more pressingly, what an error it was not to replace him properly.

Normally look forward to a European night, but i think we may be put to the sword tonight.

I would like to say we're on top, but from the last three games, it doesn't look good. I also expect Roma to defend deep, and break on the counter. Not the type of game we are masters at - side to side passing.

Not the most dynamic midfield either, and the center looks very vunerable again with the same tweedle dum - tweedle dee combination.

Could end up being a long night..

I predict the following formation... not fantastic reading.

--------------------Almunia-------------------

Sagna ---- Gallas ---- Toure ---- Clichy

-----Denilson---Song---Diaby----------
Nasri-----------------------------------v Persie

----------------- Bendtner --------------------
