Arsenal Thread

If it wasn't for Ferguson, a guy like Paul Scholes would have probably been just another overrated thuggish midfielder.

*Speaking privileges revoked*

Edgar Davids : ""Every one of us (midfielders) is just trying to become as good as him. Everyone can learn from Paul Scholes. "I'm not the best, Paul Scholes is."

Patrick Vieira : "The player in the Premiership I admire most? Easy - Scholes."

Thierry Henry : "I can't understand why Scholes has never won the player of the year award. He should have won it long ago.

Tony Adams : "I really rate Paul Scholes, because he hasn't got the high profile of many of the Manchester United players, he doesn't get too much attention, but he is one very good player. He is an intelligent player, he works hard and he scores some great goals. He is not flamboyant and is a quiet lad off the pitch but he is a tremendous asset to Manchester United and to England. He has already got my vote as player of the year."

Cesc Fabregas : "He is the one whose level I aspire to. He is the best player in the Premier League."

Zinedine Zidane : "My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder. Scholes is undoubtedly the best midfielder of his generation."

Laurent Blanc : "Scholes is the best English player. Intelligence, technique, strength... all the attributes are there."

It was just one of those things footballers said because it was the in thing to do, like growing a beard and wearing skinny jeans...... :COAT:

Yeah, praising Scholes was like wearing shoulder pads in the 80s. There comes a time when people get over it :P
Oh, and Pelé once said Nicky Butt would one day become the best player on the planet!

Seriously now, I do remember Scholes being really good, a midfielder who did it all and what I thought was his best attribute was his mid-range shooting.

But the point I raised before is: would the likes of Scholes and Giggs be that good with another manager?
Would they have 11 league medals to show off?

I look at all the players that are at United now and see the difference between when they're under Moyes and before with Ferguson.

So Scholes has been in such a victorious team, good for him! But does it mean he has the formula to success all sussed out?

Beachryan, the point you made puts in a great case for Scholes being a legendary midfielder but gives me more ammunition to say there's a load of bollocks in his comments.
The same way you used quotes from midfielders to show how good Scholes was, it would require comments from managers (people in the know) to dissect Wenger's work at Arsenal.

The question that still begs is WTF does Scholes know about managing a club?

A lot less then that bloke that help destroy Fulham into the abyss. I bet his resume was 'I coached and trained with Mr.UTD'

Fulham: hired! do what you must and hire anyone you need.

Would Ferguson have been a legendary manager without the class of 92 and Schmeichel and Cantona ?
No.
His reign lasted 3 or 4 years too long, just like the carreer of both Giggs and Scholes.
In the end his pragmatisme put United where they are now. Watch and learn Arsenal.

In the last four years Man U have won two premier league titles.

Off topic: Man U still have a very talented squad. Moyes is to blame, although to be fair is very hard to replace a coach that was been there for almost three decades. He had the money and could sign no one, except a desperation sign (Fellaini). I would give a second change if Man U had finished 5th (or 6th if Tottenham were any good), because of the pressure of the trasitional period. But 7th is just ridicilous with a squad as good as he have.

What the hell!? You can't say bad things about Sir Alex, only good things about that splendid person!! You say that he would not be well succeed without the class of 92. WRONG! Its the inverse:Class of 92 won't be well succeed without Sir Alex!

who is this guy ? Luis Boa Morte ?

A former Arsenal footballer left behind the promises of wealth and sporting fame to join the "holy war"(jihad) in Syria, it has been claimed.

In comments alongside a video released by the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), jihadists claim that the man, who calls himself Abu Issa Al-Andalusi, grew up in Portugal before playing for the north London club.

In the video, Al-Andalusi appears wearing a face mask and urges others to join the jihad.

Al-Qaida breakaway group ISIS has been blamed for the massacre of civilians, and is locked in a struggle with liberal fighters and the army of president of Bashar al-Assad for the control of swathes of northern Syria.

The posting reads: "He grew up with Ronaldo, played for Arsenal, and [then] left football, money and the European way of life for the sake of Allah."

The two videos have been released on jihadist site FiSyria.com, and are addressed to recruits from Russian-speaking countries.

One has now been removed by video hosting site YouTube for contravening hate speech policies.

The man, who speaks English with a heavy Portuguese accent, appears by a lake and boasts that ISIS has "conquered many cities" and is "implementing sharia".

He says: "If you have family in these [western] countries what is going to happen probably.

"You don't have control over your children. Maybe in some of countries it's a must for you to put your children in the kaffir schools.

"Who is going to teach your children? It's going to maybe be a gay, maybe a drug dealer, maybe a paedophile.

"It's very important for you to protect your children from these animals, from these dirty people Allah says they are the worst of creatures. So you prefer to live among the worst of creatures rather than among the Mujahideen?"

The posting on the website says "He played for Arsenal in London, [but] realised that [kind of] life was not for him, [so] he left everything and set out for jihad two years ago."

The Middle East Research Institute said that the site has been active for two years, and provides propaganda on the activities of ISIS to Russian speakers.

"At least some of the people behind the site are in Syria themselves," said a spokesman.

"The site regularly brings videos from the field showing video messages and talks of jihad fighters, news reports, scenes and footage of combat, and general jihadi material."

An Arsenal spokesman said: "We do not recognise the individual from the published clips and we don't have any record of an Abu Isa al-Andalusi representing the club at any level."

Did you guys know that Luis Boa Morte also played baritone sax in jazz bands in New Orleans in the 60s, then moved back to Africa in the 70s to become Idi Amin Dada's right-hand man in his regime and later on moved to America to star in several porn flicks in the 80s, before he finally started a career in football and eventually joined Arsenal in the 90s?

Massive game today, we are going to have to play our best to get anything out of this, if we lose then it is squeeky bum time for the rest of the season.

Lets hope they can raise their game today.

Like every season.

yeah Barkley and Lukaku are amazing, both only 20...they will be top class in few years, even now they are great players.. but also Mirallas...

if Everton wins this, i think they will be also highly motivated against City wich is good for LFC..if the title fight stayes so close..

We're so shit at this moment, it's not even funny. Podolski was the only player that made Howard break a sweat. We lack purpose in attack and we're shaky in defense.

And our players are going though the motions aren't they? Not only they've been shit, it is clear that Everton players want it more.
This is unacceptable!

Looks as though Wenger isn't feared by his players or he can't motivate them. If Wenger can't control his dressing room then maybe he should reconsider his position in the club.

Arteta getting bullied and not a teammate in sight.

The Arsenal team of Vieira, Keown, Adams et al would have been all over the Everton players, sticking up for Arteta.
