To be fair Torres was finished at Liverpool, everyone just presumed he was sulking.
Van Persie won today the Football Writers Award, becoming the 10th player in history to win it together with the PFA in the same year. I think deservedly so, he's having the season of his life.
Meanwhile, there are lots of media noises regarding RvP's future. According to those. Van Persie's agents are all over the place! Now it seems they had some talks with Juventus.
AW and the board must do everything within their reach to keep him at Arsenal. It's not only about a fantastic player who's playing at his peak and has an impressive scoring record. He's also captain of the club. You can't let one captain go in one summer and let another the following one.
I wanted this to be sorted by now, but I have to understand RvP's interests in this. He's turning 29 and he will want a big fat contract now. He's had the season of his life and he wants to combine that with all the offers he is receiving from the likes of Juventus, City, Madrid, Barcelona... he will have the upper hand in these negotiations with Arsenal, no doubt about it!
Many people are trying to look calm, but I think most involved with the club and the fans are shitting their pants with the prospect of him leaving.
Arseblog pointed out the fact that his agent is Darren "Mr. 10%" Dein, the same who has helped Fabregas, Nasri and Henry secure their moves.
But I have the feeling that RvP wouldn't be so much influenced by that, being more conscious of where he stands and what a move away could do to his career.
At Arsenal, he's captain of the team and has the potential of becoming one of its biggest legends. So if he's more mature, he will consider that and embrace the club, building on his reputation to be an icon at Arsenal. That depends on the club's ambitions, signings and CL spot of course.
On the other hand, if he has that drive to be at a top level competitive club at all costs, and that itching curiosity and wants a change of atmosphere, it would be very difficult to keep him. Obviously all those factors would have to outweigh the struggles with high expectations, pressure, being under the spotlight and adaptation (if in a new country).
I personally think he wouldn't move to another club in the Premier League. Juventus do not offer stability, no guaranteed success (despite leading Serie A, they could finish 4th or 5th next season), plus Serie A lost a lot of its appeal. But when the talk gets to Barcelona and Madrid, the threat is real.
think it's a 50/50. I do hope he stays as much as any Arsenal fan. And if he does show intent to stay, pretty please, show him they money!
Is there any club in the world who won't be interested in RVP on a free? Arsenal have taken a huge risk in good faith letting him play out his contract.
I hope he stays, because he's an asset to the Premier League, but I'd be surprised if he does in all honesty.
Yep well deserved award for RvP! He's been ridiculously consistent over the past year and has truly grown as a player and earned this.
