Arsenal Thread

Look guys we do need strength in depth. any who think we dont needs to rethink their statement because time and time again we lose out on the big games due to lack of strength in depth in our squad.

Like i keep saying. we need a mixture of experienced players with young players. we cant rely heavily on young players. it just doesnt work. The likes of barcelona and man united all have a mixture of young and old experienced players in their side and thats what makes them a cut above our lot.

Fair enough if we can keep the exact same players we have today for next season then we should be a little bit closer as being the next "barcelona" kind of team but you all know that time and time again a vital established player leaves our club and were back to square one.

imagine if hleb, flamini and Toure was still playing for us. Their experience would have helped the likes of nasri and diaby flourish a bit better and we would not have to rely on silvesta as our cb or have no recognised DM on in the middle.

If we lose ashavin, gallas, fabregas, RVP or even Song this summer, where back to square one.

I think Arsenal should be very, very gratefull to Wenger. I still consider him the best transfer ever for English football. Wenger transformed Arsenal from the most boring team in the world, to the most attractive (in the long term more attractive than Barcelona).
I also think it's great that Wenger don't want to spend zillions on stars...he wants to make stars.
People mention Touré, Hleb and Flamini. What did they do after they left Arsenal ? Nothing. The only one Arsenal miss is probably Flamini, but yesterday Diabu played a good match.
Arsenal played against the best team in the world and on top of that the team with the best player in the world, who had one of these days... Every other team in the world would have lost this match.
Somebody mentions Chelsea. Well they were also eliminated (and please remember that Barcelona should have had a big lead after the first match, because everybody seems to forget that in that first match some referee decisions where against them). Arsenal really played well and did play in their usual style. You Arsenal fans should be proud of your team.
I'm a litle bit like drekkard, to me it's about style and flair football and less about silerware. Barcelona have the luck to combine flair and silverware, but that is exceptional.

Finally about Messi. After seeing him yesterday i'm an even big admirer. He seems such a nice down to earth guy...I'm also convinced that Messi will not stay with Barcelona. I'm sure he loves Barcelona, but in a few years he will be looking after new challenges after having won everything with Barcelona. I don't think Barcelona fans will agree with me, but loosing against Real Madrid saturday could be better in the long term for Barcelona. As long as Real Madrid will be a real challenge, Messi will stay in Barcelona. If Barcelona will win year after year La Liga and the CL...Messi will be searching for other challenges and it's possible that he may end up in England (or even Russia, because that is the league were the big money will be in 5 years).
I hope Arsenal wins the title. That would be a splendid thing for football.

PS: this should have been the final.
PPS: i still hope Barcelona win against Madrid.

right now barcelona is the best team in the world. i don't believe that messi will ever leave barca for any english club - btw. who should ever pay the fee? and why should he do so??
i am convinced that he will stay at barca like xavi, iniesta and puyol.
there he got everything he needs. i will pray for a barca blast over real on saturday...

Messi will grab all the headlines but it would be lazy and naive to suggest that he alone was the difference. The way they pressed Arsenal when they lost the ball was text book stuff. It was often up to three closing down at once and it gave our midfield absolutely no time to settle. To marry that with the sweeping, attacking football they play really was a spectacle to behold and actually numbs the disappointment of losing for me, somewhat. I really do hope they go on to win it.

And it's not just the pretty stuff. Barca know when to get stuck in and mix it when required; the 'dark arts' as the Sky commentators kept saying. It's a big part of the game to know when to slow things down, concede a few 'tactical' fouls here and there and take the wind out of the opponents' sails.

As for Arsenal, I think there was a lot to be learned from last night. No RVP, no Arshavin, no Gallas, no Song and no Fabregas, our top scorer and captain. That starts to sound like bleating but discounting those players really is ripping the heart out of our side. Bearing that in mind I thought we played alright. Barcelona just turned up in front of their home fans and proved once again why they are the best team in Europe right now.

Diaby played a good game. He knows how to keep the ball and at some stages was the only Arsenal player really eating up the pitch when we had possession. Yes he made a bad choice right after we scored, but feck me you can't judge someone on one bad pass.

Bendtner scored again. Thats 11 goals from 26 apps this season from him, including 5 in 5 in Europe. I'm sure that's still not enough for some people but surely it's a matter of time before people realise he's a great talent, at 22 years old.

I just hope we can regroup sharpish for the North London derby this weekend. A win there would be adequate tonic for me at least.

You could end up in jail for saynig this, mate.

PS: Big signings are just as important as choosing well. Barcelona signed Dani Alves for 24 M€. A lot of people said it was too muchmoney, but try to find a better right wing. Now, Alves was signed by Sevilla 2 years before by 3 M€. I understand Wenger tries to find "those" Alves that cost practically nothing and turn great. But that works only once in a while, and in the meantime, if you don't find the best players for your system, you must sign big if you want to stay big.

On the other hand, Barcelona signed Pique at the same time. Pique costed 5 M€, which is an absolute bargain. And Touré costed 6 M€ back in the day, Marquez costed 6 M€... So it's not only buying great players, you have to spend the right ammount for the right players. I think Wenger only lacks a little more ambition when signing.

I almost guarantee Cesc will come to Barcelona this year. It's an election year and Cesc is number 1 in all the lists. The next president of Barcelona will pay anything for Cesc, they talk about 50 millions (which I think is just too much). In the case Cesc leaves, Arsenal should sign Gourcouff, someone like De Rossi, some experienced good defender and a striker to be title contenders again next year.

And I really hope you win the league, you can do it.

if fabregas goes to you lot this summer then its back to square one with arsenal as you know wenger wont replace him with a similar READY MADE player.

This is why i am tired and fustrated with wengers ways of handling things. he should have tried harder to keep hleb, flamini and toure or replaced them with ready made players, not rely on rosisky, nasir and co who simple are not good enough when its time to perform.

Also, selling our best player to our main rivals who we are the benhcmark of european football is not going to help the cause, it will make barcelona more stronger and us lot weaker. No matter who we replace fabregas with, that said player still needs to gel into our system which can take a while.

All in all, sell fabregas to barcelona and we are pretty much fucked for next season and behond.

i dont know about you lot but constantly backing wenger with shit like this will not win us trophies. now i know i dont know whats happening behind the scenes. maybe wenger doesnt have the money more many wenger is too stubbord to use the money we have but all i know something HAS TO BE DONE this summer to make us as good as united and chelsea nevermind barcelona.

We have overachieved drasticaly. we should be out of the title race by now and we only reached the quarter finals because we did not encounter a top side so far.

Look at the results this season againts the top sides. chelsea, united and now barcelona have all raped us. beating us easily and if you want to win thngs you have got to compete with those top teams and we cant even with fabregas on our team.

Its getting pathetic now and you guys can moan how negetive i am but its all facts. its all their for you lot to see. Dont be blinded and scared of what will happen if wenger goes. He aint a god of a manager. There are plenty of managers out there that can help turn our club around. Who was wenger before he joined us? who's to say there is not another "wenger" out their unkown? What about Morinho who is begging to come back to the premiership?

I do wonder if some support arsenal the club or wenger the manager? me? i support the club first and foremost and want them to do well as a club and team and if players or managers look as if they are not cutting it then they have to go. its plane simple really.

Am i beiing harsh on wenger and arsenal? nope its reality. if you want to win shit you got to be harsh and barcelona are ligth years ahead of us.

i stand by what i said, united and chelsea would have given a tougher game then us lot.

ediT:us winning the league? what are you smoking pal. it wont fucking happen. not a chance. If it does i'l eat my words and bow down to you lot and say how wrong i am and how stupid i am but imho we aint winning sweet FA this season.

As a neutral i certainly didn't like Arsenal. It was a big club, but not an attractive club. It was maybe the most negative big club.

That all changed with Wenger. If i would live in London, i think i would go as much to see Arsenal as Spurs (which is my favourite tean). For some fans of both clubs that is blasphemy, but to me it's logic. I love good football. And Wenger's teams play the best football in the world.

Man Utd have far more silverware, but are they fun to watch ? Of course they win and in the end real fans want their team to win. I'm not a fan of teams (not even Spurs), i'm a fan of attractive football. When Deportivo played good football i liked them, when Sevilla played good football, i preferred that team...

So you could definitely say that i am a fan of Wenger and less of the club, to be honest i don't care much about the club Arsenal.

Jonney we have strength in depth, just that we have more injuries than is comprehendable! we would need a squad of 100 players to have the required strength in depth.

We basically need a couple of defenders and another strikera and I think we will be fine for next season.

Barcelona are not light years ahead, people can say that when we play them with our full team and get battered. Until then, I know when we have our full team we can beat anybody. Just we may never get a fucking chance to play them with a full team

I do agree Wenger needs more experience. Spend a good bit of money on an established defender to partner Vermaelen would be great. Also another top class striker to compliment Van Persie and Bendtner. Also a good Keeper would be a huge bonus.

Anyway I've got to go. I would have wrote more :DD

PS Barcelona's pressing was impressive. They had 3 players around one of our players and seem to not lose their shape! seemed like they had a couple of extra players on the pitch!......did anybody count them? ;))

imagine if hleb, flamini and Toure was still playing for us.

No, thanks. Those players didn't want to play for Arsenal anymore, Jonney. Toure is a has been who was playing 1/3rd of the season for us and went for the money. Hleb is a twat who forced his way out and regrets it today (where the fuck is he now, stuttgart I think??). And Flamini got Milan doubling his wages when he was supposed to renew his contract, so he wanted to go too. But do I blame AW? No! Flamini was excellent for us but, in all fairness, he is just a hatchet man, not quite the artist on the ball. In Milan he is over-payed and can't get into the 1st team.

I agree that selling established players and growing new talents instead of spending money to replace them is not enough to keep up the pace with the big clubs (it took Song 1 season and a half to become the man for the job). But I'm also against keeping unsettled players. Never wanted this lot to stay, good riddance!

now that`s when I say barca fans are deluded, buying Fab cause their on top? Xavi is there and Fab won`t be important there just another player. Where in England he`s respected and admired. He wont even sell shirts or adverts as a Barcelona player :P ...barca is very political and he won`t go to Barca this year or the next!!! I remember fab saying that his family doesn`t appose him going to Real and truth be known if we sell I rather get the biggest purse and RM will pay more :SMUG: imo once a player leaves I wish him well than wipe my hands and look to those who are there at Arsenal...simples :))

Exactly! Jsut came back and was going to right something very similar to this.

The players that have left really wanted to leave. There was no keeping them. If we forced them to stay they would have resented it and would not have played as well.

Wenger tried and could not make them stay. If players want to leave they leave, it's sad but it is reality.

Viera diddnt want to leave. gilberto diddnt want to leave. Heck from what i understand even adebaoyr diddnt want to leave :CONFUSE:

Not all the players we sold wanted to leave but yea the ones i mentioned ie flamini and hleb did wanted to leave but in regards to flamini. we did not offer him a new contract when he wanted one. we basically tried to push him out of our team as he wasnt doing nothing for us and all of a sudden turn his head round and started performing in his last season at arsenal and gone on a free transfer.

Some of these players who leave dont just leave for the money. they leave because they see no ambitions for our club.

I wont be surprised if ashavin leaves. he is already complaining how we dont have many experienced players and his right. He wont leave for the money, he'll leave because of teh lack of ambition our club has.

Im not saying wenger needs to spend 80m on a player but surely there are enough experienced players out theire going for 10-20million right?

Look at how much ashavin cost? wasnt it around 15-20m mark and look how well that turned out to be. great player. we need more signings like that and less signing being made out of people who are still in high school.

give wenger 60m this sumemr and we cna easily get 3 experienced players out of that

I think if you signed a good keeper (why you never went in for Shay Given is bizzare) someone like Ugo Llloris of Lyons, a decent big tall powerful striker you would be in a much stronger position. Maybe a center back as back up too.

There is a lot of talent at Arsenal, the likes of Arshavin, Fabgreas, Alexander Song, and Vermaelen have all done well. Injuries are a major problem, if you think of all the top players missing (Persie, Fabregas, Gallas) and the backup players who might have played last night (Ramsey, Gibbs, etc) - then you can see you were vastly under-strenght.

I dont think you were that bad last night, Barca wilted a little when you put them under pressure. All this talk of Daniel Alves being a world class player, but Gael Clichy ran at him several times last night and the Brazilian looked shakey. And you wouldnt say Clichy is noted for his dribbling. Diaby had a good game and put in a dangerous ball that rolled across the edge of the area in the second half (Rosicky then fluffed the shot), Denilson was ok and all of your midfielders started to pressure Barca a bit and the Catalans did give the ball away a few times. Bendtner had a few chances and a player with slightly better control might have scored another 2-3 goals.

I really don't think Fabregas will go to Barcelona, it would be career suicide. How would he start in a midfield that contains Iniesta and Xavi, it's the same problem he has with the Spanish national team.

Gilberto I will give you, I wish we would have kept him a bit longer. I really dont understand Wengers policy when players go over 30?! he wouldn't give Bergkamp more than a rolling one year deal! yet he signed Silvestre who was over 30 on a two year deal initially?!! it fucking bemuses me.

Vieira was past his best (although he won some stuff after he left).

Please if you wanted Adebayor to stay at Arsenal then you can't love Arsenal the way you say you do. The guy was trying to fleece us of loads of money, because he had one good season! he wanted the same money that Henry was on, after Henry scored 25+ goals season after season and is a legend. He was disrespectful to the club and pissed and moaned because we didn't worship the ground he walked on. We are much MUCH better without him.

Arshavin is a great player, but he pisses and moans alot! one minute he is saying he doesn't know if he wants to carry on with football or not in general, then he says this and that. He is great, but can be lazy and he doesn't give 100% for the team when he plays. He has moments of brilliance that can turn a game and we need him for that.

But if he goes he goes, if players think they can do better else where and don't see the potential of our team, then let them fuck off!

I agree with you totally about spending some money on quality, I said so in my other posts. We need to get teh chequebook out and get established goalie, defender and striker at least, which will cost us around 35mill I reckon.

Wenger makes some weird decisions sometimes and he doesn't do the right things all of the time. But he is by no means past it and I think he has alot more to do for our team.

I've said it before, but I think the one devestating thing for Arsenal would be to lose Wenger. Because then we will definately lose Fab and a few of the other bigger players. Then we could go into freefall.

The players believe in Wenger and as long as they do, I do and hopefully Wenger will stay for many more years.

Hugo Lloris is definitely not better than Almunia.
I'm not sure that Almunia is such a bad keeper. He's the victim of a team that plays hyper offensive...i think sometimes people are subjective.
Take Vermaelen. I like him, but in this thead he is overrated. He had a fantastic start and scored lots of goals and he is a personality, but as a defender he still has to learn a lot. He still makes mistakes that real world class defenders don't make anymore (we have btter defenders in Belgium than Vermaelen: Vertonghen, who would be going to Everton, Lombaerts who plays for Zenith, Kompany....at the moment they are all better than Vermaelen). But Vermaelen is liked and can do nothing wrong. Almunia can do nothing right.
That late equaliser of Birmingham was not a mistake by Almunia, as a former GK i can assure that...it looked a clumsy, but it wasn't...that was a close distance shot and very powerfull...

PS: IMO Arsenal never had a really good keeper the last decade...they Lehmann, Seaman...they were not better than Almunia.

I honestly cannot understand how some of you are saying Arsenal played well? So what you're saying is, this is the most Arsenal can come up with and still lose because when Messi decides to play its over? Thats rubbish tbh.

I'm no Arsenal fan whatsoever. But watching Arsenal last night made me want to puke and they literally gave me a headache. They were awful. Imo Diaby played very well. He was the only player trying to do something in midfield cutting off passes and spraying 'em about but sadly he isn't Cesc.

Messi is amazing, no doubt there. But Arsenal's defense was utter crap. Arsenal's passing, where was it? That's not the Arsenal I know. Walcott was shit. Rosicky was shit. I thought he was injured and wasn't supposed to play? Nasri was unavailable.

I want to see Barcelona playing an uninjured Arsenal team. Quality players were out. I know they were going to lose, but not like this. This is humiliating.

I agree and for good reason too! look at the stats :P Vermealen 1st season and Al too many seasons

he has you fooled by his kick flips save tactics even you said he made a massive school boy mistake 1st leg ran out of position, you flip flop too much gerd this isn`t his 1st season bra he`s been a starter for many many moons he`s a back up at best. He thinks he should represent England ffs! Yeah blame the high defensive all you want a keeper needs to make himself feared not tickled co-captain got to his head . I know nothing of LLoris but I get tired of the backs (sagna ,clichy & Vermaelen) always looking back and using the hand signals to talks to us give us some sort of communication he hardly yells at his backs most GK have a go at their backs He looks scared to.I may sound harsh ,but Al didn`t have such a horrid game I think he deserve to wear the shirt but he has no one to fight for the position Fabinski is as rubbish as they come but he`s not starting either.

fully agree mate and im one of teh very few who does agree that we was fucking shit last night yet some think we played well? LOL we played terrible for a team suppose to be competing with barcelona.

how many fucking times i gotta tell you lot, we GIFTED most of the goals barcelona scored. any top side would not let in silly goals like that.

If you can't take our injuries into account then you have no platform on which to judge the performance. Without Gallas at the back, Song to protect the back four, Fabregas to keep possession, Arshavin and RVP to threaten their end then you are looking at a makeshift team.

Bearing that in mind we were duly dispatched 4-1. Well what did you expect? I think most people in here have said it was a brave performance but we were taken apart by a much better team. No shame in that.

PS: IMO Arsenal never had a really good keeper the last decade...they Lehmann, Seaman...they were not better than Almunia.

Sorry, that's just not true :SHAKE:

Jens had his issues but when he was on his game he was as good as anyone in the league. Watch the 2005 FA cup final again if you don't believe me.

The thing is though its become a common occurrence for you lot to have 5-6 starters missing at this time in the season.

exactly.

If you take Terry, Lampard and Drogba out of Chelsea (with a couple of other main players) how well would they do?

If you took Rio, Rooney and Van der sar out of Man Utd (Man United don't have that one master midfielder anymore so I didn't say a midfielder) how would they do?

Arguably they would have their best players missing and maybe would not do very well or at least struggle.

You can't go off on one after that result it just doesn't make sense to. We had a great deal of important players out of our team. You just can't judge on that game.

You can piss and moan about the injuries by all means and it needs to be sorted. But you can't say we are a shit team because of it.

Yes our defence was shit, but we had the weakest link in Silvestre (who in my opinion is championship material at best). We had no naturally defensive midfielder. So yes our defence was shit.

look we got beaten by the better team (Arguably the best team in the world and the favourites to lift the cup), the best player in the world who is on fire scored all their goals against a very depleted Arsenal team.

Hopefully in playing those games our team can learn from it and get better.

Well Almunia is the best keeper in the world..watch Arsenal-Barcelona if you don't believe me...(well apart from his mistake at the first goal...)

Being a good goalkeeper is not about playing one fantastic match. It's about being good all the time. Look at keepers like Schmeichel, Dassaev, Southall, Zoff, Buffon...no Arsenal keeper has been remotely as good as these kind of keepers

Seaman is a legend and Jens was much better than Almunia.

Almunia is a good shot stopper, but his decision making is not very good. Which leaves him exposed. He did well last season and everybody was hoping he would keep up and get better, but he seems to have gotten worse unfortunately :((

You are right though, our current set up will lead to teams having more chances on goal. So what ever keeper we have, needs to be really good. That is why we need to spend a bit of money on quality.

exactly.

If you take Terry, Lampard and Drogba out of Chelsea (with a couple of other main players) how well would they do?

Even if the Chelsea players you mention were missing, I still reckon that Barcelona team would never score 4 against us, precisely because we wouldn't be tempted to make the same mistakes you did. It's all 'what ifs' though...
