Arsenal Thread

Anyone have any info on what arsenal's record this year would be if matches ended at the 80th? I know its a stupid, false stat, but I can't believe the number of late, late goals tha you've come up with.

I saw something the other day and Arsenal would still have been top actually and United 2nd. There wasn't much difference really, Fulham were alot higher though/

This is a serious question not a dig in any shape way or form

At one point you was 5 points clear, very much in the driving seat in the title race. You would be knocking teams out of the way and play some decent stuff. Now its over a month since you last won a league game but you managed to beat Milan which you would have thought would have spurred you on in the league a bit, but it hasn't and now your struggling to pick points up at home against the likes of Middlesbrough and Aston Villa

In a nutshell - Whats happened ?

Great question mate.

It difficult to workout why but there have been 3 factors for me that have seen this come about.

1) Serious loss of form from the players

I don't think we have become complacent but in the league we have completely lost our way. We seem to have forgotten how to play our normal game and all our belief has gone. Why? You would have to ask Wenger that one. Not that he would admit that it has happened.

Players like Hleb, Adebayor look average at the moment, Cesc has been poor (Milan apart) since Christmas. We were scoring from all angles at the start of the season, we've currently forgotten where the goal is!

2) Lack of squad depth

Our squad is thinner than Posh Spice! Injuries to players like Rosicky, Eduardo, Van Persie, Toure have exposed our thin squad. Players who have come in to the side to cover them, Traore, Song, Eboue, Hoyte, Gilberto haven't been good enough. Our 1st eleven is very strong but after that we don't have enough quality to cover when players are out.

3) Decisions and luck

I am going to get slaughtered for this BUT over a couple of games recently we have been dealt with some shocking officiating and its cost us.

Birmingham (A)
Birmingham scored from a freekick that never was. Birmingham equalised from a penalty which wasn't a penalty.

Just before this when we were 2-1 up, we were denied a stonewall pen on Adebayor. 2 points lost there.

Lost Eduardo for the season, just when he was finding his shooting boots.

Boro (H)
We had a legal goal ruled out after 4 mins. This would have changed the game completely.

Boro then scored a goal that was debatably offside. Depends on which paper you read or which assistant is running the line.

We did finally get some luck when we won a corner which lead to our goal which should have been a foul.

All this on a day when our main rivals for the title won 1-0 with a goal which you could debate all night long whether it was offside or not. It could easily have been flagged.

Of me, the title is gone we have blown it big style. We have done great to get this far with such a paper thin squad but we are now being found out.

The Champions League now looks our most realistic option for silverware this season, we are only 5 games away from glory! ;))

The matches that could make us win are the ones against Man U and Chelsea Away and Liverpool at home.

If we Win those 3 then we have a good chance. If we don't (And I think that is more possible with the way we have been playing recently) then we will be dead. If we lose to all 3 Liverpool might even leap frog us and we could be 4th!!!!!

Thats bad :(

But I still have my fingers crossed and hopefully we can do it :DD

I think regardless you've had a great season. I mean, who'd of guessed at this stage you'd be where you are at the start of the season? I personally didn't rate Ade at all, but he's chipped in with a load of goals, and I also thought fab couldn't hit the proverbial barn door, but instead has managed a dozen odd important goals. Walcott is beginning to look like he might oneday be good and for a while there Hleb's final ball didn't suck.

The nice thing about Arsenal is that they care more about the way the club is run, and the way football is played, o'er winning at any cost. I personally believe that's great, would much rather watch Arsenal draw 1-1 than Chelsea win 1-0, just because it's more entertaining. Trophies are great, but no one denies arsenal have been great for the past 3 years, and haven't won a thing since the FA cup, (i think).

In the end, results often come down to serious slices of luck and chance. Chelsea creaetd a system which minimised risk, and maximised points from minimal chances. It's efficient, but it's dull. I think l'arse have hte right idea, and trophy or no trophy I hope they stick to it.

Thats a fair comment to be honest but its trophies that count. In 100 years time they won't remember that we finished runners-up to Chelsea in 2005 but played the better football, Chelsea won the league that year and thats that.

I admire what Wenger for has done and for what he is trying to do now but he is soooo long-term its unbelievable! Its almost like he won't spend his pile of cash cos it might stop a youngster coming through but sometimes you HAVE to be short-term in football. With a bit of investment in January our squad would have been refreshed and we may well have not lost some the points we just have.

However I wouldn't be too surprised if we went to Stamford Brdge on Sunday and won. Its been that kind of season and we have that kind of team.

Agree with you mate,we have played exceptionally well in the BIG games in the league, remember MANU,Chelsea at home and liverpool away.I beilive we can win the game at stamford bridge if we take our chances.

dude dull or drab whatever you call it Chelsea have been getting the result. Besides I'm sure no one wants to be in the loosing side and say they played good fancy football...everyone wants to play to win irrespective of whether the scoreline depicts 1-0 or 7-0. A wins a win.

And another fantastic piece of refereeing steals another 2 points from us.

Adebayor scored a legal goal and the ref ended the match with 10 seconds to go after Arsenal got a corner...

Very nice

Can't you EVER admit that you're not playing well enough mate? FOUR draws in a row isn't just a coincidence.

Not this fool again. I think he should look at Clockender's post which is a much more thorough analysis of why Arsenal are in unconvincing form at the moment. I've noticed that since Adebayor's goals have dried up, your midfield hasn't been chipping in to help him, whereas Fabregas could score with his eyes closed during the start of the season.

the thing right now is that we cant mix it up in the offense plus we dont take our chances we prefer to pass the ball when in good position to try a shoot or a crosses wich is why we dont score on regular basis, when we met teams every week and they know theyre facing arsenal, what do you think they practice all week long... that zone defense. so we can maybe break them once but certainly not twice in a game so if we mix it up and take our chances we will score more and win more games cause our D is solid. I think thats what venger said at the end versus Milan cause fabregas would have never take that shot.

So the heat is on you lot & the Chavs from now on. Have you got what it takes to win the title? What's the mood like in the Arsenal camp? Would your players put up with yet another season without a trophy? There's talk about Flamini being interested in a move to AC Milan.

The jury is out.

:)

It would take a lot for us to win it - Especially with your Goal difference.

If we lose against Chelsea then we are definately out of it - Probably if we draw aswell :((

But Football is a Funny old Game ;))

Its not the players though is it?? Its the fans, we play good money to follow them and after paying such great football another trophyless season would be hard to swallow.

However, its not over yet by any stretch.

You're very right, it's not over for ANYONE. It's been a fantastic season and you Gooners have been magic at times. I just think the pressure has got to your boys a little over the last few weeks.

Yeah you are probably right, if we don't win it watch us come back even more stronger and determined to do it next season...:))

If you guys could kindly draw with Chavs on Sunday, that'd be ideal. Many thanks :)

Seriously though, am going to miss the match due to Easter stuff...curses. Should be a cracker. I expect Arsenal to take a lead, only for Lampard to ping one in off the corner flag, post, Drogba's left nipple (he will fall to ground clutching his face) and the in. And Terry will protest the decision.

Where is Flamini from? He's french right? Weird that he'd look at Inter over Arsenal...

If you could kindly lose to the scousers then that would be appreciated! :DD

Flamini is french, I fear we are going to lose him due to our fairly rigid pay structure. Which would be shame, he has been a monster this season!

If we lose Flamini I will be upset.

If we lose him because of some reason and he really wanted to stay - then I would be Fuming.

Him and Fabregas are brilliant together in the Centre - It took us ages to get it right. Getting a great partnership in the centre is Priceless.

Well Ive been saying it since xmas, wenger needed to buy a world class player to accomodate the africa cup of nations.

Its a shame we lost Diarra I think he could make a really good player he killed it against Man Utd the other week.

We did very well while the African cup of nations was on - its afterwards we have let it all go to shit

Arsenal still needs a "fox-in-the-box" player. Something is missing and the most obvious thing is the lack of precission in front of goal. either a real goal-scorer is missing, either the young guns need more balls to take their chances and strike some in the mellon.

Arsenal's last four Premiership matches:

Draw - Draw - Draw - Draw

Arsene Wenger today:

"We have had our blip - we will now go on to win the title."

Chelsea 2 - 1 Arsenal

Oh dear.
