2006 FIFA World Cup (EA Sports)

Yeah and i think for Kits too, the texture look like WE/PES.

well spotted. the kits do look much better.

I guess we'll be able to see the grass a little clearer when we actually play the game, but it does seem to have a little less detail than before.

The kits may look better than previous but check out them fonts, haven't €A heard of anti-aliasing? Jagged as hell!!

lol
no suprises there ;).
still looks fairly good though at least something to base next pes on....... or not

i understand where you're coming from but in footy games there's a lot involved even as it dosen't seem so....

Ghost reacon is a shoot em up game which is very different from footbal games in general and this is because, it's different when you've got 22 individual different on screen active players on the same pitch and these players need different animations depending on thier position and situation (it gets even worse when its player Vs player), Plus a lot of fans in the stands (although they perform the animation in groups), plus fan chants, the footbal itself (physics), adboards, clock, commentry, (and now) 3D grass etc. all asking for different jobs to be done simultaneously in real time as the game is played. so this affects the speed of gameplay which makes it jaggy.;)

Plus EA are lazy

have you seen the environments in Ghost Recon? The 360 can handle 3d grass just fine. EA are just lazy.

Hmm, does GR:AW have 22 players running around and over 20,000 fans moving about? To be honest I'm disappointed with the overall graphics in the finished GR:AW.

Although there are clear differences between a football game and something like GRAW, to take a step backwards this early in the console's life-cycle does smell a bit rotten, IMO. You can bet your ass the development team have been told by their bosses that by 'Date X' whatever they've done is going to press and will be sold, regardless of the final quality. EA want to cash in on the World Cup, so time-consuming tasks like working hard to get more out of the machine, versus simply cutting back on little things like the grass, it's a no-brainer to them. People who don't know any better are going to take one look at the cover and hand over their wad anyway, we know it and they know it, and they'll play on that fact.

It could be the worst football game ever made, it doesn't matter. It's going in at number 1.

very true ClassicD

anyways, here a mini interview posted on www.gamespress.com :

Developer Diary - Stadiums

What were main focuses for your design?

The great thing about the FIFA World Cup is the fact that it always brings new stadiums that are built for the event.

The first thing we had to do was make sure we had all the reference material possible to build them accurately and efficiently. In addition to acquiring footage from our licensed partners, we sent photographers out to take photos of each stadium.

In many cases we took hundreds of photos to get absolutely accurate reference ranging from the way rafters look and the lighting standards on the pitch through to images of the bolts and hinges on the seats.

FIFA also gave us reference of how the graphics, such as the hoardings, and colours would be used in each stadium, so when people play the game, it will be accurate to the real event.

Also, as this is the FIFA World Cup and the biggest celebration of football every four years, we wanted to ensure we captured the festival atmosphere and ensuring our new 3D crowd to look and behave like the real thing. Fans throw streamers and confetti, as well as holding up giant flags in the crowd.

What were the challenges?

When you put a lot of detail into things like the players, their kits, and the pitch they play on - that doesn't leave a lot of room for things like balloons, fireworks, confetti, streamer, and flags.

We had to build our stadiums in a way that the best parts of the geometry were shown in gameplay cameras. That means putting less detail in the last row of the upper tier of seats, as opposed to the lower level seats, and paying attention to things like staff and photographers seen standing around the perimeter of the pitch.

When you're dealing with a video game, you've only got so much display memory that you can use at one time - so we had to re-think where to put the details in stadium. The end result is a great looking stadium, with lots of effects and a party atmosphere.

What technical tricks did you employ?

Aside from putting less polygons and detail in to the areas you don't see a lot in gameplay, we also worked on a new lighting engine for the game. We have day, night and dusk lighting conditions, with dusk being the most dramatic.

The sun will shine through the stadium gaps and cast accurately coloured shadows on both the pitch and the crowd. Even the flags hanging in the rafters cast coloured shadows on the crowd as our artificial sun shines through them. We also used depth of field to help focus on key areas of the stadium when viewing gameplay and the cut-scenes. This way we focus the gamers’ attention on the things that look best in each situation. Even our goal net has new physics applied, so each shot into the net will look more accurate than before.

Yeah Yeah Yeah EA. Change the record you say this each time and then the game ends up playing crap and some elements of it look stupid too! especially that stupid out of focus effect they did on RTFWC!! What was that all about? Also Player Likenesses are poor on RTFWC I suppose we are expecting more of the same for 2006 FIFA World Cup?

i took a look at for example kaiserslautern fritz-walter-stadium, two vip room towers built for the WC are missing, so is the new west grandstand which is still looking like it was 4-5 years ago...no idea where they sent their photograph guys, lol.

I think Fifa has a ways to go...however, if they only fixed certain things and can make it play like Football Kingdom with better AI, it would be enough to warrant my money.

The EA fifa team are terrible, I mean I didn't like the look of the their first attempt but this is even worse!!! WTF is wrong with them lol, I think they should get some tips off the team that made FNR3 and maybe actually watch some real football. They've had 2 chances to steal some WE/PES fans and just wasted both....pathetic really.
