Sweden:

Today Ibrahimovic

alltime Nils Liedholm playmaker nicknamed Il Barone in italy, active 1943-1961 was captain of the swedish NT and AC Milan. He led sweden to gold in the 1948 olympics and second place in 1958 world cup and won loads of trophies with Milan including 4 scudettos. Is also one of Milans and Romas more memorable coaches.

taken fron wiki: "According to the legend, it took two years playing for Milan until Liedholm misplaced his first pass at the San Siro, the rarity prompting a five-minute ovation from the home crowd"

or Gunnar Nordahl, striker that played in AC milan during the same period as Liedholm and still has the Serie A record with 225 goals in 257 games.

but id personally say Liedholm for his achievments with both the NT and club

Italy: MALDINI! A Genius; the best defender ever (and we've ALL have the pleasure of saying to our grandchildren that we grew up with the guy. He is a great advert for football past & present too. Also RuneEdge; how the hell can you list Rooney for England? (I get the United theme ;) ) Scholes has been a far more consistent & better player for the last 10 years. Rooney is of yet to prove himself in World Football. Do your homework mate. :)

That's all for now.

Great thread Gerd. :)

Not sure why but when you think about Scholes, you don't really think about his international career. You think about Rooney and things like Euro 2004 suddenly spring to mind.

Scholes has won the FA Cup, League Cup, Premiership & European Cup with United and was always first on the team sheet.

That's an excellent list Gerd and I have to say I agree with most of it.

Rather than repeat all the same names, I will just state my personal favourite players of each country based only on who I have seen enough of and not necassarily the best I have seen. (I am 26)

Exactly, with United. Not anything with England. I picked Rooney assuming we're only talking about what they've done with their national team.

But it's a list for best players in the specific countries. Scholes has won the lot with United. Rooney hasn't.

It doesn't say "What player has played best in an England shirt?" does it mate. :)
