The "What Happened To Players" Thread

Anyone remember these two Brazilians who lit up the Bundesliga in the 2000-2002 era....Ailton from Schalke (Kanye West lookalike :p) and Giovanni from Bayern Munich. Another player you don't hear much is Marcelino (Ronaldinho lookalike with gold hair). The three of them contributed alot of goals in the German league but now you don't hear much about them.

Here's one for Milanista.

Whatever happened to Gianluigi Lentini? - he signed for AC about 15 years ago for about £25m (must have been a record) and he was dreadful.

Also, I loved a spanish guy called Gerard. I think he was at Valencia 6-7 years ago, but got a big move to Barcelona and then promptly disappeared. What happened next?

I remember Gerard went to Monaco, the year after the CL final I think it was.

£25m for Lentini!?? I always remembered it being something like £10m. I did some research about him, and he helped us win the league in 93'. He was then in a car accident that ruined his career. He ended up playing for smaller clubs in lower leagues.

Signed for Milan for £13 million from Torino in 1992.

Key player in Scudetto winning season that followed.

Then a car crash which left him with head injuries and such.

Career went down the pan because of the effects of the crash.

And Gerards at Recreativo at the moment.

That's sad - I guess I saw him after the car crash. £25m was a bit OTT wasn't it, I suppose £13m in those days seemed a ridiculous amount of money (and it still is!).

I've got one for you now T Butcher ;)

Back when Chelsea was a Serie A team, they had a bunch of Italian players, I think they are all retired now to be honest, but I'm not sure what happened to them when Roman came in. I remember Di Matteo, Ambrosetti and Ambrosio.

Di Matteo in now manager of MK Dons! He was forced to retire after a bad injury 2 or 3 years before Roman. He did some media stuff for us, and he has a nice restaurant in Chelsea where a lot of the players still eat. I think it is called 'Friends' or something!

No news on Ambrosetti (The Italian Ryan Giggs as Luca once called him) and Ambrosio - they both left early in the Ranieri years.

We also had Dalla Bona who left just before Roman, who is still playing in Serie A I think, and a guy called Luca Percassi who I don't think made it.

**Edit*** Wikipedia is incredible! Ambrosetti now plays for some team called Pro Patria (?) and Ambrosio is at Reggiana. Percassi played mostly B & C football after he left us and I think is now retired.

Ailton had quite an odyssey...from Werder to Schalke to Besiktas, FK Red Star, Grasshoppers Zurich, MSV Duisburg, Metalurg Donezk and now he is with SCR Altach (Austrian Bundesliga)

Marcelinho left Hertha for Trabzonspor, but returned after just 6 months to VfL Wolfsburg, he's been a key player in their run for UEFA Cup the past season - but now he left for Flamengo in the summer window as he was not needed anymore.

elber went from bayern (he is still the best foreign goalscorer of the league, 113 goals) to lyon, broke his leg and never really recovered from that. he moved to borussia mönchengladbach were he featured 3 or 4 matches, seemingly not able to get back to professional football. he left for cruzeiro belo horizonte of brasil but afaik couldn't keep up their either and ended his career back in late 06

he was an absolute goal machine, brilliant player, i'd bet he could still play in europe today if it wasn't for that injury.

I remember Dalla Bonna really well for some reason even though he barely played. I just remember him scoring in a cup match I think and thinking he had a cool name.

He ended his carrier :).

Now you can see him on TV on regular basis as a "specialist" and he wrote a book when he critizes Zidane, Marseille and all his past friends.

His job is to criticize now. He is very weird...

Pro Patria vercelli is the Italian equivalent of teams like Blackpool and Wolverhampton.
At the turn of the century round 1910 Pro Patria Vercelli was the biggest team in Italy. If you want to know more Pro Vercelli in particular and Italian football in general, then you'll have to read "Calcio" by John Foot. One of the best football books i've ever read.
And about Lentini: he could have been one of the best players ever. After his car crash he returned to Torino but he was merely a shadow of his former self.

Who remembers the Belgian forward Luis Oliveira (gerd)? He was quite successful at Fiorentina during the mid to late 90s. Well he's still playing (aged 39) in Serie C2A for Nuorese, in Sardinia.

Of course i remeber Oliveira.
As a matter of fact, if i remember well, isaw his maiden match for Anderlecht against AA Gent.
At the time i was living in Gent (off-topic: if ther eis one Belgian city to visit, it's Gent, beautifull city, great light life, lots of great bands, try Thou for example)and went to all the home matches of AA Gent...one immediately saw that Oliveira would turn out to be a good player. Anderlecht at a great team at the time: Oliveira, Degryse, Albert (the prince) and Nillis...all great talents...(once again off-topic: Nillis' son is playing for PSV, he's quite good too).

What about Casiraghi, I remember when Chelsea signed him thinking he was going to be quality but the injury he got meant he never got a game.

What happened to William Pouiter(sp). He was a french centre back, played about 3 times for Man United in the 90's, scored against QPR and then disappeared..

Oh and he was a proper slap head, might have had alapetia.

William Prunier :).

I liked this player. Very rough.

I know he was coach in Cannes but now ?

Ahhh Prunier that was it! Thanks mate!! I did like the look of him but then he just stopped playing for United and I never heard of him again.
