Pro Evo Soccer 1 (PS2) : CleverPetey, come back!:)

I dusted out my copy of PES1 on PS2, switched on an emulator software and ...:CONFUSE::CONFUSE::CONFUSE: This game sim is simply HARDCORE to the bone!!!

5star difficulty is mega tough, it is by far the hardest PES, harder than PES5, PES3- harder than ANY PES!:BOP:

But here is no cheap passing "after a 180 spin" or super accurate passes at oblique angles. There is no "CPU catch up cheating"- once you're in the clear, you're GONE. The body shielding is done tremendously well. Establishing control over midfield is very tough as you cant play your way out of any cul-de-sac that you run into, you simply cant.

There are no instant 180 turns and unskilled players (eg most defenders) feel like heavy trucks- but that is GOOD!

The touch system is tremendous- you have softest touch L1, medium R2, and hard knock-on R1. The inertia is very good- it takes a while to really hit full flight and and it also takes a while to slow down.

Analogue passing I'm still getting to grips with, but I know from a trustworthy source - CleverPetey or one of his follwers (who refused to "upgrade" to PES2/WE6FE/PES3/PES4/etc and carried on playing PES1) that Zidane or Beckham-esque passing is possible in this sim.

Really hope this thread catches the attention of CleverPetey as he did some editing on PES1- names, uniforms, that kinda thing that cant be found nowdays...

Man those were the good old days! I really miss them...back then the simple fact of playing (even in a 0-0 draw) or scoring a simple goal was so rewarding and fun. Don't get me wrong, more recent games like PES6 or now PES 2011 are really awesome, but none of them get me to jump out of my seat like PES1/WE 6 or WE 5 FE :)

Please, do not mention PES6 as "really awsome"- it was the twighlight of our beloved Pro Evo and bad unbalanced game. 2011 is on the right track, but there is so much "softcore" (opposite to hardcore;))) oozing out of it- the mega easy passing in all directions, the simplified touch system (the medium touch is gone), the patheticly simplified body shielding... ANYWAY! I'm getting carried away here.

Wanted to share my CRAZIEST Pro Evo experience ever that happened to me TODAY while playing PES1 (ps2). Playing on 5 star difficulty and was losing 1-5 by the 54th minute to awesome team Norway 2000 (Tore Andre Flo, Soskjaer, Iversen, Carew, Bakke...).

But what happened then?????:CONFUSE::CONFUSE::CONFUSE::CONFUSE: Nearly had a heart attack in the 86th minute haha:)

Nice! Found this cool vid also from ISS:
Replied your PM:)

When you start playing, number one advice is to turn on the manual pass gage and start using manual passing- Beckham and Zidane are trully incredible to play as in this game. Manual passing, especially aerial is probably the best in all PESes because of player positioning and body shielding....
Its not just Zidane/Beckham neither- slow but big, strong, tall Germany are terrific in PES1 when you use a lot of aerial manual passes. Manual passing MAKES this game! Well ,its one of its main features anyway:)

I suggest finding WE5:Final evolution.
Because -like you- I recently went back to PES1 and realised how great it was, I couldn't believe it in fact, it had almost none of the flaws and bugs of the more recent PS2 games like PES6 but still had the core PES gameplay experience.

I managed to find WE5:FE online for a fiver delivered from Genkivideogames and it's even better than PES1, the shooting especially is more varied and it has ridiculous but entertaining commentary.
Have fun ;)

Thanks for the tip! I 'll try it if I stumble upon it. Love John Kabira comms, always have! PES1 is excellent though and its commentary is so corny that its genuinely funny : "the sun is beating down but the wind is shooting through the stadium...":SMUG:

But its gameplay is certainly hardcore enough to keep me occupied for a while - I never mastered it back at the time, as I thought it was way too hard and quickly jumped on to the PES2 (arcade crap) band wagon...

All teams and all players unlocked, many names corrected.

Easily the best game in the PES series.

Cheers, to all those who refuse to compromise with Konami's commercialization of the game by means of arcade build and deceitful AI/physics.
