PES games on retro handhelds

So I sold Thor and order Odin 3 for replacement. I would like to have something smaller than steam deck. In general I like idea of handhelds and I'm trying different options. PES 2021 is not the most importatnt but would be great if it will work. I was dissapointed with Thor because in theory should work but for some reason is unstable.
I think it's probably just a case of wait for a while. There's so many companies at this now that some random retro handheld that seems to get released on a monthly basis so if you're not happy with Odin 3 then it's probably just a case of wait for a while until something else gets released.
Although prices seem to have gone up with all gaming stuff because of the ram shortage. I saw a video the other day explaining it. I'll post it somewhere in gaming.

Currently I'm waiting for shipping of Odin 3 Max should be on my desk soon (this month I hope) and for sure I will be testing PES 2021 and FL26. I let you know how it works. Btw Snapdragon 8 gen 2 like Odin 2, Retroid Pocket 6 devices can run PES 2021 on low details on 720p with decent FPS but devices can be quite hot 80 degrees, so it is good to underclock cpu via ClusterTune app to decrease temp by 10 degrees. Do not go for Ayn Thor with dual-screen if your main goal is PES21, there is something strange and it is unstable even if on the same specs devices with single screen works quite well
Appreciate that mate.
Like you I'm more interested in an android handheld because of the size compared to a PC handheld.
My only option is the Odin 3 (if it performs well on PES 21/Football Life) because anything else is guaranteed to be less powerful.
If it doesn't work well, I'll might have to bite the bullet and look for my options in the PC handheld market.

I got a legion go and a second hand EGPU, so I can play FL26 at 4k docked to the TV in the living room with a PS5 controller or hand held. It impressive

Hi all
Currently using Ayn Odin 2 Portal and Pes 13 runs flawlessly however was wondering if anyone can advise if Pes 21 would play on this device through Gamehub or Winlator

Hi, I created this thread so we can share our experiences running PES on handheld consoles. I couldn't find anything like this on the forum, so… here we go. As we all know, this market has grown a lot in recent years, and many of us now have Steam Decks or other PC/Linux or Android handhelds.

To kick things off properly, I'd like to show you what I managed to do on a low-end Android console called the Mangmi Air X. I got it as an early-bird unit for 80 dollars (it's probably 10–15 dollars more now). Here are the specs:

Mangmi Air X
Android 14
CPU: Snapdragon 662
GPU: Adreno 610
RAM: 4 GB

With the current state of Android emulators, this little console can easily run PSX, Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, and PSP games. Some GameCube titles work too, though most PS2 games don't run well. It's a budget device after all; if you really want smooth PS2, you pretty much need to spend an extra 100 dollars on something like the Retroid Pocket 5.

But… PC emulation is still an option thanks to apps like Winlator, GameHub, and GameHub Lite. They aren’t exactly plug-and-play, but they’re surprisingly optimized. And if your Snapdragon device can load Turnip drivers, it might pull off things you wouldn’t normally expect.

Below you can see a video I recorded of PES 2013 (PC) running on this thing. It’s smooth as butter. Honestly, it blows my mind that you can carry PES 2013 in your pocket on an 80-dollar device. Maybe that just means I’m getting old.

Also, here you can find my recommended GameHub Lite settings for PES 2013 on the Mangmi Air X

Feel free to share your experiences with other handhelds!

Yes, you can run PES 2021 or FL26 on Odin 2. I recommend recent Winlator 11 by brunodev85. Here you can find settings, on this video you can see different version of winlator, you can try it as well, but I was able to run it on both versions. and also if you want to lower temperature of device use ClusterTune app for CPU underclocking, should work the same with lower temps.

With my Anbernic RG557, I mostly rely on emulation (PSP or PS2 + PS1) to play.

After testing and confirm PS2 runs perfect, I don't use PSP so much as my handheld has R1/R2 and L1/L2.

For a handheld with only R and L, the PSP versions are interesting. Same for less powerful devices...

Hey guys,
I'm currently looking to buy a AYN Odin 3 handheld mainly for retro emulation and PES 21 (PC).
From what I've gathered, the device is capable of emulating everything from the PS2 era, probably PS3 too.
But I haven't seen any info on how the PC version of PES 21 runs on it.
Does anyone have it (or at least a device with a similar chipset) and has tested PES 21 performance and stability?

I tested PC emulation of PES 2021/FL26 on the Odin 3 Max (Snapdragon 8 Elite, 16 GB RAM) and in my opinion it performs very well, it totally meets my expectations and finally I have a compact device that I can take with me anywhere and play really demanding titles. I attached a video with the demo :

EmuReady report with configs is here : https://www.emuready.com/listings/7f619227-4756-4eb4-8123-a21ad7157358

When it comes to the performance of the device in "PES 2021", it rather easily achieve 60 FPS at 720p resolution. When it comes to the temperature of the device, it is necessary to use the ClusterTune app for CPU underclocking - the strongest underclocking profile from the default ones, which is "Large Underclocking". With this profile the console runs smoothly but does not get hot and the fan runs quietly.

I also recommend setting an FPS cap in Winlator to 60 or 120 - this prevents the GPU from working excessively and also prevents the console from heating up too much.

I checked what the device temperatures look like:

I tested all variants using "Large Underclocking".

Res: 720p, cap: 60 FPS

In every graphics quality variant, the game reached the limit, fluctuating between 59-60 FPS, both during gameplay and cutscenes.

  • Low details: 55°C, 5W power consumption
  • Medium details: 60°C, 6W
  • High details: 60°C, 6W
Res: 720p, cap: 120 FPS
It is possible to improve FPS in every variant by reducing the amount of underclocking, but this results in higher temperatures and higher power consumption.
  • Low details: average ~110 FPS, 63°C, 10W power consumption
  • Medium details: average 90-100 FPS, ~75°C, 15W
  • High details: average 80-100 FPS, ~75°C, 15W
At 1080p there is some graphical glitching, basically flashing white frames. It becomes more noticeable the higher the graphics settings and FPS cap are. With the current state of the graphics drivers for SD8 Elite, I do not recommend playing at this resolution - we need to wait until mature Turnip drivers appear in Winlator. Then the above results may also be significantly better :-)

My recommended settings to keep the temperature low, quite fan and power consumption as low as possible:

  1. In the ClusterTune app, use the Large Underclocking profile.
  2. Use Winlator 11.1 (Brunodev85).
  3. Play at 720p (1280x720) resolution.
  4. On Odin 3, there are currently no stable Turnip drivers in Winlator, so use Vortek drivers for Vulkan.
  5. Set an FPS cap in Winlator to 60 FPS, for example using the environment variable <span>DXVK_FRAME_RATE = 60
  6. Low level of details in game settings give you the best performance in terms of temperature and battery consumption.
With these settings I did a test - I played 2 matches in Master League, which took me a little over 30 minutes. Starting the game, loading ML, setting up the squad, etc. (you know, normal manager work...) and the battery level dropped by 7%.

So I think that with these settings it should be possible to play for quite a long time without charging the console - but we'll see...

Thank you for the detailed research. All this on just android looks very interesting.
I would also assume that performance should be somewhat better with ArmadaOS running on the device.
