PES 6 and shooting...

I seriously don't remember PES 6 having poor shooting mechanics with the sensitivity being so high. Even with a single tap of square, it either tries a dink or more so just flies over the bar, makes me feel like I'm playing Madden at this point. Was it always like this, because back in the PS2 days it felt different (less sensitive). Is there a difference in PC vs console or just getting back to the familiarity with the game?

I am sorry I wouldn't want to try it retro with all due respect. I faintly remember playing Ibrahimovic (of Sweden NT) from the demo back in the days and realizing how well modeled he was in terms of his build and attributes but definitely how easily he could brush off opponents on the run (especially on the ball).

The big difference in shooting between PES 6 and bascially every other PES before and after is that it punishes and discourages shooting from any angle or position.

If you are used to PES 5, where you can just shoot full power on goal no matter where you stand, what your angle and distance to the ball is etc., you will have quite the learning curve head of you. But ultimately it is a system that rewars playing proper football and feels far less arcadey than any other football simulation.

Most of these things are intuitive and hard to explain, but you will get a feeling for when to shoot. The more "control" you have over a ball in a situation, the closer you aim towards where you player and the ball are looking/moving etc., the more accurate and less sensitive your shots will be.
But try to just run vertically and shoot in a 90°, try to shoot right after gaining the ball, shooting without really having control over the ball, or trying to shoot with enemies near you will mostly lead to the shoot bar instantly filling up and your shot going to the moon.

It doesn't have poor shooting mechanics. You're probably just used to playing modern football games that require less accuracy to get a shot on goal. PS2 PES is a combination of the amount of power and the directional press, how long you hold the press, the directions you rotate to and various other factors. If you're having trouble with the standard shooting then try holding the R2 button whilst shooting for a more controlled shot. This is useful in some situations but don't rely on it or your goal variation will be lacking. Go into free training and practice shooting from different angles using different direction and different levels of power. Practice makes perfect.

Also, I suggest using the D-pad instead of the analog stick because it's far superior for accuracy. Unless you use an Xbox controller then don't bother because that D-pad is junk.

if an opponent slides whilst you're shooting, pretty certain you sky the ball every time. and shoot without pressing sprint will help. use close control button pre or during shot. Training mode, free training will help too.

It really gets frustrating. I don't expect to score goals, but when a slightest tap on the shot button makes the player shoot the ball to moon, it gets frustrating. I'd expect a very slow tap on the ball so the ball has no power and just rolls through the grass instead of flying. Yeah, the GK will just catch the ball, but the player action matches my input at least.
