PES 2018 PlayStation & Xbox Discussion Thread

I like the shooting so far, seems to be way more varied than last year, and feels a lot less scripted.

Other than that, a few first impressions:
- Defensive AI of opponent is much better now, certain "go to" PES tricks that have more or less always worked doesn't work so well now
- The ref has been great so far (played about 5 matches), even called a dive on Coutinho when he fell easily to a fair challenge in the box and gave him a yellow
- Lots of nice new animations
- The short corner variants is a nice touch
- Getting around on the sides and getting good crosses in still seem a bit too easy
- Nice touch with being able to pull off your shirt to goal celebrate with certain players!
- Goal net sound is delicious!
- Why can't we change the attacking settings of the teams? Seems weird.

Oh, well, back to the game. Liking it so far, but there will inevitably appear a lot of annoying shit after 50+ matches or so. :P

Like 2017 I really don't like it, wingers are left in acres of space, one through ball then it's too easy to cross, heading is still too overpowered but the balance is they made the keepers save more from close shots.

It's too easy, playing against Barca should be a test but the space left by them is just too exploitable, shooting is exactly the same as 2017, it feels like the same AI, the pace is good but you can still knock past a player by tapping R1.

At first it felt a little heavier but the same things I hate are coming out more, to me it feels like the PS2 ISS games, a more arcade experience to pro evolution soccer.

Really unhappy

I played about 4 games on the PS3 version. The first thing that gets to the eye is that the animations are clearer and more logical. Something I missed very much on PES 2017. Graphics are a bit better, more colorful and smoother. The biggest change is on the R2 and R1 dribbling. It feels very good, which is somewhat bad because defenders feel a lot heavier and slower. Yes, it's in general slower game but... it is not annoying and unpleasantly slow. It feels right.
There are definitely variations on the shots, yeah, but how the hell goalkeeper manages to catch and react almost every hit and how often I get the hit the post-bar? ... 3-4 times per game.

Highlights music is killing me...

wh..wf..om.. HOW, why? Teen-Girls anime songs ala Barbby Girl or.. space girls.. bullshit! WHY Konami !?

Here are my somewhat vague and general opinions after playing a handful of matches:

- Pace of the match and the way the players move looks/feels excellent. More responsive than last year.

- While player switching can be a tad wonky for me, players are much more alert to loose balls and 50/50 tussles. Less of the ol' "I'm going to bounce off you like a trampoline and not even attempt to go for the ball" that was found in previous iterations. Granted, still early, so I'll have to see if that's actually the case. Urgency definitely seems improved.

- Passing looks less awkward this year and feels a lot more natural when coming off the player's foot.

- Looks and moves brilliantly.

- Refs seem adequate so far? Hard to tell as I need more matches under my belt.

Unfortunately, much like PES 2017, I absolutely detest the shooting. It seems entirely one-note. I've tried on Manual and Basic thus far, but I'll give Advanced a go at some point. I scored my first goal with what was in theory, a fantastic bit of play with Dembele. Despite all of that, I felt almost nothing when the ball hit the back of the net. I felt empty. The lack of satisfaction (for me) when it comes to scoring goals in PES has been major bug-bear of mine over the past few years. As it stands, I can't see myself playing this game for hundreds, or even dozens of hours due to the shooting. As I expected months ago.

It's a shame, as everything apart from that appears (we'll see in a few months time) to be top notch. If anything, PES doesn't feel cheap or bootleg anymore, it feels like a top tier football game. They've clearly put in a lot of work.

Curious, what is it specifically that is missing from the rewarding feeling?

Is it the nets?

Is it the keepers (diving backwards always gets to me)?

Is it the build-up (too easy, too hard)?

Is it the strike of the ball (too perfect, on the laces)?

I have yet to play the demo, so I am genuinely curious. I personally have felt that it's more of an aesthetic thing. While people complain about Nets and ball velocity (shot speed), I believe it is a pure combination of both. I made a twitter post a couple months ago in which the way the ball entered the net:

this just proves to me that unfortunately Adam and konami team are more than happy with these arcade style thunder shots and soulless goals
Trust me - Adam and the developers aren't the same thing. Adam doesn't command them. He represents them.

I've played the demo and I love so much of it, it is truly the best-ever in so many ways - but I can't shake my disappointment with player positioning and the amount of net-bursters. I'm not angry, outraged, disgusted, apoplectic and all of the other angry words people will use. I just can't get past it and it means I struggle to enjoy the game. But the vast majority on here will enjoy the great stuff enough to see past the less-great stuff, and I'm happy with that.

Thing is, based on the beta and demo, it's going to be the best PES ever. I didn't apply this level of scrutiny to PES 5 etc... It was just a brilliant game. And this demo is better.

Curious, what is it specifically that is missing from the rewarding feeling?
Sorry to jump in, but for me, it's that shots from defenders are as well-executed as they are by strikers, and "auto" long shots tend to go the same distance wide, in the same place, whereas with manual long shots, you can force a corner *so* easily, whenever you like.

But what really sucks the joy out of me is pressing shoot and seeing another screamer flying into the top corner when I was desperate to see a scruffy shot deflected out for a corner, or even a thump with an odd ball flight that the keeper deflects into the net out of sheer confusion. But no. It's another perfect strike and you know there are only a handful of outcomes.

When a rocket is rare, you jump out the chair.
When it's every shot, it doesn't mean a jot.

As the old rhyme goes.

Guys I have a suggestion for graphics brightness/pitch in the game:

When you're in-game, go to system settings. Then go to brightness settings, make contrast 50 and brightness 25. You would thank me later. It looks much better and more realistic. At least for me.

the first negative i can see is Liverpool vs Dortmund is NOT a good advert for the game thanks to the way the teams are set up. Matt's Forwards not tracking back issue + Dortmunds deep defensive line mean midfield battle is crap, but we knew that anyway i guess.

Yes I agree, playing a Brazil and Germany match and it looks and feels a lot better. Germany play a 4-5-1 so Brazil are forced to work there way past the midfield, I am impressed.

Really enjoying it. The weight of the game feels excellent.

The passing is hard to get used to, as it's not as smooth and sometimes very bobbly compared to the PES 2017 (I absolutely adore 2017's passing :( I understand this may be more realistic though.)

My only major for concern is that playing a few games as Liverpool on Top Player, and cutting across goal from the wing using the pace of Mane seems far, far too easy.

Your the first one to say that, as far as I'm catching news, opinions and tweets and stuff...
Hm... I'll see myself in an hour.

Honestly, I haven't been able to try it myself but I've read tons of people on Twitter saying it's as slow as the best (some even said slower). It actually made me so relaxed.

If IF IF IF Konami ever address the shooting we will have a special game

But until then...no I can't keep scoring the same kinds of goals where it feels like the CPU has done most of the work for me

This is with advanced shooting btw

Not going to manual because why should I? No one else online will and the CPU in Master League won't use Manual

this just proves to me that unfortunately Adam and konami team are more than happy with these arcade style thunder shots and soulless goals

Shame.

Oh, sad to hear.
See you next year then buddy. Take care.

I have a feeling your gonna love it...
Pace is spot on
Weight and pace very very good!
And looks sharp as F as well
Enjoy

Four matches in.

First Match: didn't like the pace of the game, and it felt easier than PES 2017 (playing on Top Player) along with feeling like PES 2017. It being easy is clearly just demo jive-talk difficulty.

Second Match: went Colo Colo against Dortmund. Much better. Shooting felt way better thanks to me sticking it on Advanced.

Third Match: went Argentina v. Brazil on -1 gamespeed and same difficulty. Felt much, much better and way closer to the beta. Started using more shielding and body feints.

Fourth Match: got absolutely hammered off of Brazil 4-1 on Top Player. Came from out of nowhere that, Marcelo almost scored a truly delightful goal that went just by too.

Current thoughts: I think PES 2018 could be amazing online (the best way to play the game) if it plays like it did in the beta and how it feels like it plays on -1 on the demo currently.

What I might do: record "my shooting experience" with the game

*In my opinion etc.

Since I got this early,I've played quite alot today.
Just like last year I played this demo on professional, which is the most balanced/non scripted difficulty.
And I love this game.
But a demo is a demo, hopefully this with a few small tweaks (positioning) it's a keeper when it comes out.
Shooting could be more varied, still better than 17,which I didn't have much issues with, being on manual and advanced settings
Great step fw

Thanks for this. I did actually mess about with the settings for a bit but what you have recommended here works well for me.

Please do.
I might do it to, since it's better/different than 17

Yeah, sorry, 15 or so games in and this is where I stand as well, more or less. Referees are noticably better, which is very good, and there's more animations and so on, but it's basically very similar to PES 2017. We're going to complain a lot about this one was well, I reckon ...

Yeah, I think it is a bit better too currently in my opinion and based off my own experience. Still early days and etc. and so on.

Feel like I need to caveat everything these days round the community sites to avoid inevitable backlash.

Think I'll wait until tomorrow to maybe start putting something together. AI has had a couple of lovlely looking strikes against me and I cracked a few over the bar too. Can't recall if I saved them but I saved Marcelo's wee placed effort with the outside of the boot that went wide.

Im going offline as well mate, need to enjoy this one.
I honestly think that everyone's opinion is good and valid and I respect all,
but once I see "exactly like 17" I kinda shut down business for the day
It's far from 17, which I loved,I take the bad with the good stuff, whole picture counts for me

Pace and that you actually can make change in direction and completely get away from the cpu stands out for me.
To be honest,it's not until now that I've "mastered" (strong word) my Pes 17, so I'll guess this one will surprise and amuse me for a long time.
Enjoy the demo mate

Lot of people saying it's changed for the worst since beta :FAIL:

Pretty much! I don't remember complaining at all about the shooting in the beta. Now it's back to the broken PES 2017 shooting - just terrible, really. The worst being those supposed hard shots that sort of just float towards goal and the keeper does this swan dive like move and saves it. So many of those, oh lord ...

I actually quite enjoyed the beta, despite having to play against idiots that paused the game indefinitely when getting a corner kick, but not getting a lot of enjoyment out of the demo, sadly.

It's not exactly like pes 2017 anyone who says that is having lazy opinion

but dear me konami...this shooting?? Surely they have played competitor? It's just too easy to score again.

this game will get boring very quickly because I don't feel emotion when Ball goes in. I am very sad tonight I was looking forward to this so much.
