The most frustrating thing is old WE on Ps2 had more shooting variety and trajectories than a 2017 game. *Snip*
That video is an eye-opener. Wow. Those goals are amazing.

Goal keeper just stands there for one of them. That video is an eye-opener. Wow. Those goals are amazing.
No need to look at Fifa 14, every recent Fifa has better shooting variety than Pes unfortunately.

Also shooting in FIFA is miles better. Don't like the game that much anymore, but shooting is varied and satisfying.
Has a pes game ever had amazing shooting mechanics though? The best pes games were 3 and 5 for me, 6 was ok too. But the shooting was never as varied as it is on the modern day competitors title.Yep, I made the same point before. When I score in Fifa 16, it feels really great, like I earned it. The ball reacts so realistically to every bobble, scuff, slice, deflection etc. Previous PES games had this too, so why has it been abandoned?
Seriously, if Konami could just implement FIFA's shooting mechanics, it would be a near-perfect package to me.
I agree with you, honestly - but for me, the point is that in those games, due to code being simpler (no "manual" to worry about), certain aspects were better (or, to make it non-subjective, deeper). Not the whole game. Just certain bits. As a consumer, it's a weird situation to buy the latest iteration of a product and find that it's worse in some respects (even if it's better overall).I could be very wrong as I hadn't played pes 5 or old pes games for long time now
Good post and I agreeI agree with you, honestly - but for me, the point is that in those games, due to code being simpler (no "manual" to worry about), certain aspects were better (or, to make it non-subjective, deeper). The shooting in that video, which you aren't impressed by - as far as I'm concerned, a lot of those goals can't be scored in 2017. The ones right into the top corner from an angle, I don't see those in 2017. Hitting them from outside the box when you're in the centre, sure - thunderbolts abound. But from the side of the box, the keeper will have those covered every time (in my experience).
In 2017 you know what shots have a chance, and what has no chance - so you end up (even subconsciously) shooting from the same places all the time. You know it's pointless doing something different, so why would you?
(Maybe you could score them with manual shooting, once every 50 attempts, but to make a separate point - in those days, we didn't need manual shooting. The game balanced a striker's attributes with the situation to produce a realistic shot/aim/accuracy. That's been sacrificed in order to give us more control, but what we actually have is every strike of the ball being perfect and powerful.)
I couldn't go back and play PES 5 and say, like some do, "this is still the best football game ever". That's their opinion - and I totally get it too, given the above - but the passing is so on-rails and the AI way too cheaty because of the restraints on CPU/intelligence, for me to enjoy it. For all its faults, I prefer 2017.
But every review of PES around that time championed two things - "every game is different" and "every goal is different". I think the former is still true (though positioning intelligence has disappeared and the current implementation of tactics is a massive part of that). The latter, though? It's gone. (In my opinion.)
Couldn't agree more Guru83. How hard is it for us to have 2 really top notch footy games?Good post and I agree
Pes 2015, 2016, 2017 have all been predictable games..
I got very bored with all 3 after just a few months
My big fear for pes 2018 is yet more predictable goals
That feeling of the CPU doing a lot of the work for you
The automated flicks and backheels look and feel wrong to me as well
The weird thing is, the CPU did work for you in the old PES games, but because attributes governed it, there was a greater variety of goals. My big fear for pes 2018 is yet more predictable goals

I would regularly try an ambitious effort with a dodgy Default ML player on PES 5 for instance and watch it swerve off and scare the Corner Flag... or to hit the fans sat on top of the roof of the stadium...The weird thing is, the CPU did work for you in the old PES games, but because attributes governed it, there was a greater variety of goals.

On the money there Chris, every game/goal came out differently back then, and like I wrote before,I score pretty much 3-4 different game types of goals now, shooting from an angle, first or far corner, hasn't happened to me on 17 except from a free kickI agree with you, honestly - but for me, the point is that in those games, due to code being simpler (no "manual" to worry about), certain aspects were better (or, to make it non-subjective, deeper). Had that pes 5 video had been pes17 or even 18, all of us here would be cracking the shits saying, games broken perfect 1st time shots, keepers are broken, etc
This. One hundred percent this.loved pes 5 but it looks and feels extremely dated now
Agree totallyExcept that rationale doesn't fly because of course it would be mocked, that game was released well over a decade ago on a platform that is three iterations old. That isn't the point. The point is, there are certain aspects of older PES games that should have been further built upon, or looked at in terms of inspiration for future titles. Which is quite amusing seeing as how old those games are.
