PES 2018 PlayStation & Xbox Discussion Thread

Couldnt agree more. I even gave my PES6 away after about 2 weeks because for me it was a backward step from PES5. All a bit over powered, too easy to score, and no fouls.

Controversial opinion time: I preferred the Xbox 360 version. It was stripped back and had a lot less features than the PS2 version but the game was much slower. Had some horrible slowdown if there were too many players in the box though.

This. This is my actual only gripe with the game. The lack of "Afternoon", "Evening", "Snowy", etc. It just lacks variation in that regard and sometimes it can make the game turn a little monotonous.
Spot on.
A little more variety of time of day and weather would make the games definitely more varied.

The ideal selection for me would be something like that:
Day: clear, cloudy, foggy, rainy, snowy.
Afternoon: clear, rainy, snowy.
Night: clear, rainy.

It doesn't cover every time and weather condition, but these would be already more than enough.

Came here to post this. I can't fight the hype for much longer, it's a great write-up.

I know I said it before and at the risk of repeating myself I must say: The best decision I have ever made in my life (?) has been not to watch ANY videos/gifs/images from PES 2018 prior to the games release.

All I do is read comments/tweets/previews and I'm so at ease.

Every year in the past I used to get very anxious (not in a sick way, lol) whenever videos starting to appear, and later on the disected GIFs with every single movement you like or dislike about the new game. And now I can see why.
All this content they put out and talka bout is meant to cause anxiety and make you want to pre-order. Once you distance yourself from all that, you can patiently wait while watching others battle. This doesn't mean I don't want to have the game right fucking now, but the wait is more peaceful.

I would only switch Snowy in Afternoon for Snowy in Night games.

But Afternoon is mandatory I believe. Because the lighting is so different, it would give a whole new atmosphere to the game, if well recreated.

Sorry to reply to this twice, but, the Facebook comments on this article were a bit of a wake-up call for me (in terms of just how hated PES is by younger generations).

The days of gameplay being what matters are well and truly dead and buried. I've said it in the PES PC thread before - when a kid plays FIFA and hates the game, it doesn't even cross their mind to examine why, critique it, or that there's an alternative - and there isn't, when what makes a football game "football" to them isn't anything to do with the kicking of the ball. It's just kits.

I understand all the FIFA YouTubers being invited now, fuck. You can't blame them.

EDIT: Saying that, if Konami do turn PES into FIFA gameplay-wise (I'm certainly not saying that they are), the FIFA fans would still buy FIFA, all of us would stop buying PES, and that'd be that. That last comment...

I think it would make a world of difference to these guys if there was an "option file hub" within the game itself, where you could easily (and without a PC) download and apply option files. Perhaps there are legal issues there, but if they don't actually host the material, and the game lets you make teams appear to be licensed when they're not, I don't see how it's any different doing it on the console as opposed to the PC.

That's a question I'd love to ask to the Konami guys.

Fits majority of FIFA gamers to be honest. They want things handed to them instead of working for it. That's what I feel when I play FIFA 17. A casual game.

The last comment is obviously coming from someone hating the way KONAMI is acting as a game developer. Almost abandoned console development, the Kojima situation and the rumours that KONAMI tries to destroy the professional life of their ex developers contributed to create an extremely negative opinion about them. There is no doubt now they are one of the most hated videogames company.

Disagree, I don't think that guy knows any of that. He's just one of those guys who hasn't really tried PES but he's seen screenshots of unlicensed teams and so it's a "PS2 game" (you see similarly stupid comments about next-gen graphics).

You gotta admit some of the things they say in that Facebook post are very right indeed.

For example the foul system. It's not just about fouls per se. No fouls means no exciting free-kicks = less drama. No yellow or red cards. Less/No injuries.

Then about Importing Kits/Logos/Team Names, PC users don't have that problem because it's a lot easier but don't you think Konami could make that task A LOT easier for Console users. Like you could import just one pack file that would add the kits/bades/team names all at once if the files inside that pack have the correct names (just like a CPK works)?

Sometimes they are just not smart enough or forward-thinking.

Guys I'm struggling with the negative view of FIFA players..i played pes all year till around April when it just become repetitive, scoring on basic/advanced was just dull , manual shooting is hit and miss in fact as mentioned so many times shooting on a whole is not good. On ML the catch up bug is horrendous there's little to no fouls and I think I've seen about 2 pens since last year both in exhibition match ..its non stop end to end by design ..5 second fix kind of helps but doesn't completely..FIFA has it's faults no doubt but at least there's proper midfield battles, varied goals and attempts and dare I say individuality is miles ahead

I see your point, and I play both, and prefer a lot of the gameplay in FIFA.

But all the top-rated comments on that article say "I can't play PES because London Red and Merseyside Blue and T-shirt kits".

My point was, given the legal reasons why it's like that (and that Joe Public doesn't give a monkeys about those legal reasons), it must be a hell of a struggle to sell a decent number of copies (and therefore, to continue to invest in the game).

I really enjoyed FIFA 16 but i think 17 is a mess tbh. It looks amazing but player change is broken, dribbling seems to have been broken, passing far more random that it was. I've no doubt this was because of the engine change but still, i couldn't play 17 for very long.

I've played PES more than FIFA this year but both have their faults.

EDIT: on the edn to end side, i have that in both games unless i try and play slower football. It doesn't really bother me though as i purposely slow games down and don't play online.

I haven't watched the above videos yet but i'm interested to see how the dribbling/tackling dynamic works out. We've read that tackling is different and people have found it difficult. If tackling isn't underpowered, the possibility of being totally skinned should A, mean dangerous dribblers are acutally dangerous and B, mean the game slows a little with people having to drop off and not dive in.

Also, if they've made the god tacklers stand out, we could see a real return to individuality and tactics. Man marking Coutinho with kante etc will be a dream.

Also, Eurogamer have said better players are more aware. Will this extend to man marking, tactics etc? Barca are very open at the back and if nobody has touched their settings, they will be vulnerable to those through balls.

There's a chance, a chance, this could be amazing.

I don't know where the perception that PES was ever a crowd-pleaser comes from. Aside from maybe PES 5, a lot of people didn't bother with PES because of the lack of licenses and flashy logos. Very few people I personally knew could be arsed with sorting it out and I guarantee that one of the major reasons people actually bothered playing it over FIFA in the first place was because FIFA's gameplay used to be absolutely shocking. The gulf between them simply isn't as wide these days.

It's why I wonder when Konami will finally realise they're pissing in the wind trying to entice the FIFA players, which they are judging by the marketing approach so far. It doesn't affect my enjoyment of the game personally so whatever but it still looks very much like a PES game made for people who also like FIFA; people who are probably already happy with what they've got and therefore have no reason to move on.

Basically, I don't think the hate for PES comes from anything PES does or doesn't do. It's more from people who're already happy enough with what EA are offering them and see no reason to try something different. They end up project minor issues like proper team names in order to convince themselves they're right.

Yeah, but in the PS1 & PS2 days, I think we were talking about maybe a 65:35 bias in favour of FIFA purchases*, whereas now - when games cost a lot more money to make - it's something like 95:5.

*Pretty sure I've read somewhere that PES outsold FIFA for a brief period...

Played PES2018 yesterday in Dortmund. Had a great time! Love the changes all around the board. Had a lot of footage and skimmed through it the past hours and made this little edit. Atmosphere, the new player emotions. Misses, goals, everything. (And yeah I tried to do an overhead kick a lot to see how many times it activates. Less then PES2017 actually)

Nice to know.
What about dribbling, sprinting, catch-up bug?.

Loads of obvious fouls are being ignored by the referee, in my opinion. Particularly in the above video. At 4:34, that's a definite foul (and a weird animation).

I'm starting to see that hip/shoulder barge that they've put in a little too often. Again, they're fouls - but I've not seen a foul given for one yet. 8:14 is assault! The ball isn't bloody involved, he just barges the Liverpool player out of the way!

Yeah. Either they desist before it's too late, or they'll soon discover that they're doing it against the bloody wind.

Dribbling is incredible to me. The shielding makes dribbling so fun. It feels fluid and dynamic. The way the player receives a ball and controls it is also miles better. What really struck me was how much more the player knew how to react to it EARLIER without waiting for the ball and waiting for an animation to kick in if you know what I mean (on pes2017)

When a quick player was loose and 1on1 at the GK there was no catchup of defenders whatsoever. Completely gone

Awesome. It all sounds like what I've been dreaming of forever.
Thanks!

On come on.. sorry but that is BS . . . PES 6 is WAY better game compere with PES 5 or even from most overrated game - WE9LE ! I do not stop to play PES 6 .. since 2007. Almost every night i play online with the friends.. and still is fantastic game. Also i try WE9LE too , becouse after i buy GTX 970 now we can play any PES games online co-op ML or others modes, whith SHARE function . WE9LE has way less animations, unresposible control and passing feels like 4 directions , the ball phisic is more arcade fast in most of time , close control is a joke , the high through pass too , everythig feels like on rails , every touch is a foul and more and more.. All day I can talk you how and why PES 6 is better than PES5 / WE9 but it's no longer meaningful and I do not know if this is the place for that

Probably true but as I said, I think a big reason is because FIFA's gameplay used to be absolutely light years behind PES/ISS. Konami don't have that luxury anymore, which isn't to their discredit but an acknowledgement that EA finally got their act together. And I say that as somebody who doesn't like FIFA.

Does anyone have any influence on Twitter to ask about after game player ratings?
It's not that important but i would like to see more then eg. 7 for GK when he got 2 PK's and few shots cleared.
Thanks in advance!
