PES 2018 PlayStation & Xbox Discussion Thread

Had a lengthy chat with Adam on twitter yesterday. Some of you may have seen it. I will post it fully here so nothing's taken out of context.

Thanks for sharing this, Lami. It sounds quite encouraging to me. Bhatti even explicitly recommends to keep advocating, even though some things might take longer than others before getting implemented. All these factors—the development progress seen in PES 2018, the increasing role of feedback, the talk about a coherent vision—solidify my belief that there are more chances than in the past to influence the development decision-making process if we manage to lay out a shared “vision” about what would be beneficial to the game.

While the switch from 8 directions to 360 (or whatever) undoubtedly complicates many things, I am not at all convinced that it inherently makes AI development so much more difficult.

Let's take a simple example. Consider a player shooting from the edge of the box. The shot can have a huge number of different outcomes: goal, save, post, miss, deflection. All of these have parameters in themselves.

However, the decision to take the shot has much fewer parameters: space available, shooting stats, positions of teammates available for passes.

So while the state space of outcomes is enormous, the state space of decision making need not be. In fact, isn't the uncertain nature of the outcomes part of the lure of real football? The fact that in many cases a player can not know what will happen.

Furthermore, in situations where the state space of decisions is large (e.g. movement), an intelligent programmer / AI designer can cut it down. For example, why not first make a rough movement decision in 8 directions and fine tune it later (or add randomness)? Probably even Messi can't control his direction of movement to the accuracy of one degree.

Looking at the end product, I could bet KONAMI doesn't have a single PhD level AI expert in their team. I think AI has been very much in the backseat in game development. Given the huge strides AI is currently taking in other fields, it's going to be exciting to follow how things are going to change in gaming.

Well in that exchange with Lami, Adam Bhatti seems a perfectly reasonably guy...what's all the fuss about?

Can't you feel the tremendous amount of patience Lami showed for the sake of the conversation keep going?
Thanks to Lami, I know for sure now that the tactics problem will be there and 1 month after release everybody will be complaining about how fast and arcade the game is despite all the progress.

....this looks amazing... looks so natural... no slowing down as the striker reaches n then knocks on the ball... nice running strides throughout, n then... after the player scores - the seamless transition of beginning to actually celebrate with arms out as the player gets ups...fkn awesome... the smoothness of animations n the massively improved crowd makes it look almost real.... my Mrs. thought it was real... good start to the 'world tour'...

Edit: I was referring to Torres's goal on another twitter clip, when stating the fact that players now seem to run onto the ball without the slowdown/slowing down, in running animations ..which is what happened in pes16/17. This is huge a..meaning less manipulating catch up by nearby defenders... good shit

Yep, absolutely outstanding, lovely shot animation, great keeper movement and animation, the way the player goes down and then gets up and starts celebrating is seamless. the Dortmund defender looks folorn and the Liverpool player who comes in from the left hand side of the screen celebrating is fantastic. wow

I don't think the FIFA mass market as it is now will ever give PES a shot. FIFA has become more than a game, it's now a cultural thing amongst the younger generations, they don't give two shits about gameplay, as long as they have the licenses, stadiums and are able to open packs etc they will never come over to PES, so the marketing ploy of using FIFA youtubers is a waste of time.
The youtubers have little interest in PES because they know their audience won't give it a look in.
Just look at the comments on Twitter under some of the player face pics (in this case Bateson87, who primarily does FIFA), imo the faces and body shapes look amazing, and these kids are ripping them to shreds.

For me, 2018 looks the most promising in a long time, hope to god they don't change it based on youtubers feedback.
