PES 2018 PlayStation & Xbox Discussion Thread

You gotta hand it to him, They did made huge progress with this Engine from PES 2014 to PES 2017. On consoles anyway.
If you start playing Youtube videos from each of those games, on PS3 and then jump to PS4 and then to PS4 PRO, the improvements are notorious and great.

So I wouldn't want them to change the Engine. Not for another year. Stick to what youare doing good.

Absolutely agree. Don't change the engine. That's what is going right. Honestly, there isn't much going wrong either. They do not need to reinvent the wheel. Add some animations to lessen pace, common sense football decisions, remove the tactical rigidness and attack/defense levels, and we're good to go.

it's humor

Usually I'm fairly quick in regards to picking up sarcasm via the internet, but this time...

Whoosh.

On topic, I echo everyone else here. Stay consistent (which is what they have been doing). You can't improve the base of the game if you keep chopping and changing everything, so from that perspective, it's quite promising. I say this because year after year, PES comes so close to "getting it." Some years more than others, but even when PES was at its absolute lowest, there were always bits and pieces where I'd go "You'd only see that in PES. Brilliant." That's why I remain hopeful (and slightly cynical) because they're perpetually on the verge of greatness.

Come on now, we all know PR often consists of lies and exaggerated claims.
Thanks for talking my point. And yes, it was a joke. Sometimes this thread could use a litle bit of humour...
This is a borderline thread. After that trailer teaser, people were outrageously optimistic and now the pessimism takes over again.
I'm very eager for news, but i've learned not to judge...you can only judge when you have plande THE retail version extensively and even then, with all the patches, the game changes constantly.

I've always said that Konami listen too much to the fans.

i wouldn't be surprised if they take this game engine into PS5. It's powerful enough and they are getting it now. It just needs more console power the PS4 isn't that powerful. So imagine FOX on PS5. Actually i would be shocked if Konami changes to a new engine anytime soon, they build this one, so it wouldn't be smart financially to change engines.

I did that 2 days ago watching a youtube clip with the title PES 95-17 History or something. I honestly preferred 2014's animations and look from that video and things started to feel off after that.

EDIT: This is the one

The most obvious transition for me there was the beginning of the PS2 era. It started to look real.

22:14 that looked awesome.
I never really understood why they only put that camera switch in PES 2013 and then immediatly removed it for the next version. So awesome.

Anyways... I disagree with you Lami. PES 2014 is in the trash for good. Other than feeling the weight of the players (which in some cases didn't match what one would expect from light skinny players) and the physical battles, PES 2014 was the most frustrating PES I've ever played. And graphically, it looked good when you first played it. I remember thinking 'WOW this is Next Gen' when the Demo came out and I played it on my PS3, Allianz Arena looked awesome in day time matches. But Not comparable to PES 2017 on the PS4 Pro really. Miles away. And it makes sense, I mean we're talking about two games with a 3 year difference. That's what it supposed to happen. Should look dated.

Agreed.

PES 14 had good animations but the frustrating gameplay was enough to not like it. Well, it felt better than FiFA 14 old gen but meh, PES 13 felt a lot better.

The graphics was really good for PS3 standards. I wish they kept that graphics for Ps3. Or atleast make it look like PES 10. But that's what happens always, once a new Gen console comes. We see major graphical degradation on the previous consoles without any valid reason. Atleast they kept the gameplay intact, else it wouldn't worth a penny.

Adam Bhatti when asked about worries of unresponsive controls and animations like PES 2014 "That's part of the shock. Beautiful animations, incredibly realistic, but by some kind of magic - incredibly responsive. It's unbelievable!"

The graphics on that looks better than last years game. The lighting and turf is much better. There is a haze to it that fifa copied and then PES changed it and made it look a lot worse

I love how players are smaller and the pitch looks bigger.
Makes you want to find free space to take on rivals and run, until you realize you're out of stamina... lol.
Excellent for counter-attack strategies.

Supposedly PES 2018 will have smaller players, making the pitch looks bigger, which is awesome if you ask me.

Only if the stamina works individually on the actual pitch.. in 2017, i mean bringing fresh player in the 80 minutes to find he does not feel fresh, more or less same stamina with others despite his stamina bar lol

I still think the animations of 2014 look superior to what we have now. The gameplay maybe isn't the best due to slow response, which I'm guessing is because the animation cycle had to fully finish before executing your next input. That added some realism but also frustration with it. If they manage to bring those back, add a lot more realistic ones to them and take into account quick, responsive user inputs then it'll be impressive.

I also hope they get rid of the skating introduced recently. It has always put me off FIFA and I certainly don't want it in PES.

Pes 18 needs to get rid of the catch up process, sort out advantage rule and fouls, improve shooting variation, make AI positioning so they don't intercept most balls (kind of perfect positioning) and make it look next gen
catch up process? meaning?
if this is what your saying it isn't that bad really, if your facing a fast defender with 85+ speed and only have a 85 speed offensive player on the ball, you need to use skill to get bye.

my 90+ speedsters don't get caught.

Example: Timing L1 and R1 Dribbling Full Manual Play

Player positioning should be a stat, higher the stat, hard for offence to find holes for through balls or long passes and vice versa, so many stats they can create even interceptions should be a stat, let alone the numerous others we are all after as well, the more stats the more longetivity ML has providing they all work

that's worse than the catch up bug they didn't even attempt to tackle

There is a big difference with the game and reality with the catch up bug.

How often in real life do you see a player go through on goal and then get caught up by the defenders? It only really happens in he makes a mistake. In PES the vast amount of time, unless you are miles through, you will be caught if running for anything over a ten yards

It was put in football games as a cheat way to keep scoring realistic. Today with the ability to program in defenses that are intelligent enough to keep scores down, it should have no place in a football game and be solely down to players speed stat

The gameplay in Pes 2014 was extremely frustrating even if the animations were definitely smoother compared to Pes 2015-16-17.

Adam on twitter said this about Pes 2018:

I agree. PES 14 was the first instance of the stat "Explosive Power" which was really a fancy word for "Acceleration". It worked perfectly, and it actually needed some revving up from the players. I think this is what people had issue with in terms of responsiveness, the explosive power served as a reaction stat as well (similar to how FIFA uses Acceleration value for reactions), and why PES 16 was very twitch with the Sprint...because Explosive power was increased in responsiveness/sensitivity significantly after PES 15.

The biggest issue I had with PES 14 was the poor defensive line logic, which contributed to many of the same type of goals. The defensive line logic was poor because the defenders would follow attackers run all the way to the end-line. Even with offside trap enabled, it wouldn't matter. So all you had to do was send a player on a run, and they would be followed, resulting in very easy passes to the box, turning the defender, and scoring; or finding the vacated space left by the defender, and dribbling through.

One of the best tactical values that KONAMI ever came out with was the "Shift to Attack". It determined how aggressive the transition from defense to attack would be for teams. It wasn't as properly executed as it should have been, and I had to change every team to the value of "1" versus the 5 or 7 they defaulted at.

Here's a video of it, can still tell that the CPU played fairly quick despite the value of "1" for shifting to attack.

Just watching some PES 2014 videos. I know it had it's issues but outside of the input lag, it moved so so well. It actually looks better than 2017.

If they can find a way to create that fluidity and level of animation without sacrificing the response times it would be huge for the series.

I miss MASS as well, i thought 2014 was such a brilliant base moving forward and they totally abandoned it for the safety of their stale formula.

EDIT: the more videos i watch the more upsetting this is haha! I need to replay the game to familiarise myself with the downfalls (other than input lag) but i remember really enjoying that PES too. Why did they abandon something so different and genuinely innovative? They it's like theyjust gave up.

so is running on rails in this game, making you run on the exact same line as the AI so the faster player (usually the AI) wins the ball.
So are the animations, making your player fall, stumble, or slowly get up so you loose the ball.
Wonder when Konami will remove this out dated cheat programming and bring this game to a more intelligent 2018 standard.

A lot of why that 2014 version looks better is down to the turf looking green, the darker the green on the turf and the less harsh lighting, makes the game look smoother.

This might sound mad, but it is definitely the case and it is the same in the other football game too.

As well as the lighting and turf being better with shadows as well, I think that the old style add-board make the game look a whole lot better than the new spinning ones.

Watching that history video above and seeing the coin toss in the first 2 games is pretty funny. That was over 20 years ago, and since then the home team starts on the left side, every single match. I don't need an actual coin toss introduced, Konami should just throw some random calculations in there to get this to a more realistic level of the home team starting on either the left or right side of the pitch. The 0.8% of players who might actually be confused by this change would be mentally challenged anyway.

agree, and still i would love for the coin toss to make a comeback.
not on the priority list ofcourse but it would help the atmosphere.

i would like coin toss yes? for me what i want is better shooting mechanics definitely and less help in assistance as people who play few games will be a challenge to u in this game which is unrealistic how much passing assistance there is on default, fifa is harder to master the play
