PES 2011 Discussion thread

I'm assuming you were given a studio tour of some sort where all this EA tech was explained to you.

I've obviously not been afforded this privilege. I have though played the various sports games EA has developed using their tech, and it's funny that the same physics issues crop up in them. Whether that be laziness on their part by taking shortcuts, a lack of knowledge or a problem with the tech. It's no surprise the only top sports title they produce is a hockey game, which is all about skating.

I know 2K are using a pretty old system to make NBA2K, which NBA Live (now Elite) was supposed to wipe the floor with, if EA were to be believed. That obviously hasn't happened, as the EA game suffers from much of those same FIFA/Madden issues, while NBA 2K is arguably the best sports gaming franchise currently in development. Then you look at NFL 2K5 and you have a game from 2004 which demonstrates much better physics than any sports game EA has ever produced. At some point you have to wonder when this highly lauded tech is going to produce a top notch game.

Boardroom Politics are preventing them i'd say.

I'm a little wary that they don't have the knowledge that Konami have but there enough football lovers there for them to make a good solid football sim.

Nailed it here man. There's no way they don't know what we're talking about when we ask why a defender can turn on a penny and hone in on the ball with a tackle. It's in there so that the casual can hold "X to pressure" and rip the ball off you at the same time without reprieve.

Sad really.

I said this on the other forum but I'll say it here, PES2012 will surpass FIFA12 in all aspects if EA continue to "bunt" the ball every year. Konami looks to have hit a homerun with 2011 and once Seabass has that mojo... well you saw PES4, 5, & 6 so you know what to expect.

Once Konami get BAL online in the same fashion EA has with "Clubs" then it's history repeating from then on out.

Correction: PES will surpass FIFA in all aspects but the most important one - sales.

Maybe not most important to us but certainly most important to EA and Konami.

I remember reading an article when ISS 98 was out.
Seabass and his team explained how they knew very little about football and just watched what they could in Japan and were able to somehow convert what they saw into a great game mechanic.
It explains why the game-play has always been the core and the rest has lacked the final panache.

But I think it's fair to say that that's no longer the case, if you spend 10+ years of your life developing several football games, dedicating most of your time to try and recreate the football experience with a controller in your hands, surely you'll eventually know a lot about football and love it.

Remember the tokyo trip? Seabass and his boys plus journalists talked a lot about football, watching videos on Youtube, comparing old stars and new stars, from Zola to Messi, etc..

Also, I don't agree about your last sentence. PES always had the attention to "the small things that matter" since the very early days.

if all these changes happen, then i think pes will actually receive sales boasts alone and fifa will eventually drop. before anyone bounces in with the b bomb, i play fifa mostly only as pes 2010 isn't quite what i'd want in football game via gameplay problems, hoping this year we'll have two. bring on the demos

I've seen a few, but I've never seen the ball bend like that with absolutely zero spin. It's like magic to me.

It would be magic if it suddenly started spinning in the middle of the air.

The problem here is that the freekick in the trailer is slowed down quite a bit, so it seems like the ball just avoids the keeper in the last second.

Well it wouldn't start spinning in mid air :CONFUSE: A ball's trajectory changes based on the amount of spin the ball receives (from the source). Perhaps the combination of awkward camera movement, keeper animation and extremely narrow FOV made the ball seem like it had swerved. I'm just pointing out something I noticed :P

No i agree. It was just an example of Seabass etc making a game from scratch but not neccesery needing what ppl would imagine to make a football game work.
The last sentence really reffered to konamis lack of Marketing, communication and things like menus and the masterleague which has stayed uniquely japanese for ever.

Katsuya Nagae was the producer of ISS. Don't think Seabass worked on it as the Osaka team was a separate entity.

This was ISS Superstar Soccer PRO 98 KCET (Winning Eleven 3) which went on to be iss pro evolution soccer then pes.
Not ISS Superstar Soccer Nintendo 64 which was Osaka went went on to be the ISS series of games

About that Ronaldo free kick and the GK's reaction. I'm also a (former) GK and i think there is nothing wrong with that animation. We saw a couple of similar "howlers" by GK at the WC (i remember one from the Japanese GK and maybe also one from the Uruguayan).

Also a very good and in depth write up comparing the 3 games Jimmy. I always thought that PES 6 took the more arcadey approach, too many people complained that PES 5 was too hard and defensive with the advantage being given to the defenders, making you work hard to create space, too strict with the referees which made you time your tackling to the nth degree etc.

But that's exactly what made it brilliant!

Exactly, PES 5 was so brilliant because it was difficult but not unfair, it had imho the right balance between arcade and simulation, PES 6 became easier.

2010 as mentioned was amazing but very hard to get into, a lot of people had already lost patience and either didn't bother with it or give it enough time. If it had the animation level of FIFA then it would be clear to see which game was better. But give me gameplay and tactical depth over animations any day, if a compromise had to be made.

I gave it enough time, I played it for at least 6-7 months for 1 hour daily: PES 2010 is way better than PES 2008/2009, but ultimately it was broken: Animation-transitions were bad making the whole game stiff, reaction-times were too high, some star-players were pretty much superhuman and nearly unstoppable, referree often didn't grant advantage, goalkeepers were bad, offense-players stop their runs too early before the defense-line, headers too easy and effective and the whole game felt too much on rail and too scripted... and the atmosphere was bland...

sure the later gameplay-updates, espescially version 1.03 brought some improvements but not enough.

After I bought PES 5 for xbox1 and inserted it into my xbox360 I was surprised how much better the game was eventhough player-individuality and likeness was not on the level of PES 2010 and graphics were horrible: It played a smooth, challenging game of football, the referree knew advantage, the keepers worked reliable, the offense-players didn't shy away from the defense-line and made their runs, even the atmosphere was leaps and bounds above PES 2010.

And it felt much less on rails, the passing was way better with a feeling that you direct the passes, it felt similar to semi-assisted in the Fifa-games.

We played PES 6 last night on our weekly lads night. To be honest, the game is so shallow, after 2 games I was completely bored. Needless to say that will be the last time I play that game. What it did make me realise even more is just how far Konami have come with PES 10 and PES 11. Both are worlds apart. I will never understand people who claim Konami never made a good game after PES 6. Thats pure ignorance in my book, and maybe they need to take up a different sporting video game past-time.

Now, where is the news on the bloody demo ffs ?? :CONFUSE:

You are wrong because it's unfair to compere 4 year old game(PES 6) to new one (Pes 2010). In time when PES 6 was released the game was awesome in all aspects. Pes 6 in 2007 used 100% PS2 power in particular mechanics aspects in the game. Three years later PES 2010 use maybe 50% power of PS3. Of course in graphics department use more than 50% but we speak about gameplay etc. Why people say a lot bad things about PES 2010? The answer is very simple. Because latest Pes not use power of new genaration of console like was in PS2 days.

Is the proper " shoot fake " back?
And is the power bar on passes adjustable? ( suppose initially i pressed it little and if want it to be longer can I press again? or by double pressing it will become a pass cancel?

Looks like eurogamer jumped the gun, the page can not be found anymore?

Hmm that's weird, it was definately there before!

Anyway they basically said it was available from 8th September for PS Plus Subscribers and 15th for normal users. Xbox Live demo date was not known, although I am guessing Gold might get it next week.
