PES 2011 Discussion thread

Dude they gotta market the game. I really think they put the replay for every nimble foul so you can see why you got fouled. Its a marketing ploy I hope...I doubt they will be this much replays in the game...

PS I hope this doesn't come back to bite me..With Konami you never know :JAY:

It's nothing to do with marketing mate, it's presentation. Konami have always been all about the broadcasting feel and it's no different if not slightly better in this game.

I actually prefer the broadcast style over FIFA's chopped up, awkward rushed cut scenes and replays from unrealistic camera angles fuckfest.

Enjoying PES demo alot but one question, can i actually control my goal keeper or what?
The CPU just makes him dropkick it, sometimes even when he's very deep on his goal line, which is just dumb.

@Ern Dog

Thank you. I will try some of the things you mention. Especially changing the offensive or defensive levels on the fly with select and R1 or R2. I didn't know this is possible. I forgot so much about this game over the last 3 years.

I try to like this game but until now it is i little bit frustrating because of the AI. It feels strange coming from FIFA that nobody of my teammates seems to move a lot. That is why i think watching some full demo games could help. Because maybe i'm doing some major things wrong and i would see it if i could watch how other people use to play. Especially the build up play seems so slow. My left an right midfielder never seems to start into space, never seems to work the wings like they supposed to do (Robben and Ribery). Really, the movement of the AI is so different to FIFA that i feel a little bit helpless right now.

Yes, they don't make as many runs as in Fifa but they do make their runs, it's just more subtle and you have to spot them. Sometimes they just stand there, sometimes they shake a bit to indicate that they would make the run if you pass to them usually near the offside-line and other times some people are running forward into space but you have only a short, really short time to make that pass as otherwise they are very quick in offside and the opportunity is gone.

In Fifa offside happens much less because the defense-line doesn't work as well there with some defense-players always chasing the attacker... therefore the time-window to make the pass into space is there much bigger...

If you want to make your team be much more offensive, go to the time-actics-menu and erase all presets, cause these presets are overwriting any tactic-setting you would choose, erase them all, then go out of it and go to the strategy-menu and select "Radical offensive" or something like that.

In team-setup you should also make sure that player-support is at 20. You should also choose a formation that is useful for a good offensive and give the individual players their rightful roles individually on this big team-picture.

In game you should press Select and R1/R2 simultaneously to increase their offensive-awareness-level.

That way your team should play much more offensive but is of course more open in the back.. but given that the offensive-AI of the CPU is pretty tame it shouldn't be such a big problem.

Personally for me the game clicked only today this morning, after having played the demo in the last two-three days for about an hour a day. But my oh my, how it clicked. I had the most fun and the most realistic football-experience in videogame-form that I ever had with any football-game and I played a lot of them with PES 5 being my favorite... until today!

PES 2011 is pure awesomness, Konami did a fantastic job to simualate the sport.

It's far from perfect but this passing-system and the animation-system is pure geniuous, and the shooting and ballphysics are brilliant, the dribbling magnificient and the tackling just right and the individuality of the players astonishing.

The problems I see:

AI is too tame on top-player!
Referree doesn't know the advantage-rule (what the hell?!)!
Goalkeeper-animation is a bit poor and he parries too much!

Some great goals there, man! I think this video really sums up why I prefer this PES over Fifa 11, so much variety in play and in goals.

How do you guys capture your goals by the way? Is there a way to save them to the hard disk? I have only been filming a couple of my best with my mobile phone.

I have it on the PC-version of the demo, it's a brief stutter where the picture freezes for a second and then goes on like nothing happened, it happens about once or twice a match. It's not a gamebreaker though, just strange.

Weird that it never happens for me on PC, but it does on the 360.

I keep reading that the keepers parry too much, I also had this opinion until I watched the Bundesliga highlight program on ESPN a few days ago. By far the majority of saves made were parry's and not that many of them were pushed out of play either. It made me realise that animations aside the keepers in PES are pretty realistic.

Thought i would post my impessions here as well for those stuck in this thread:

Hi guys, used to be on this site on the ps2 days but really haven’t come back since none of the footy games on next gen did it for me (maybe Fifa 09 and Pes 2010 but mainly against my mates).

It was weird the past 3 to 4 years having no football game to get my fix since the available options were not up to PES ps2 standards, but i guess getting busy with finishing up school kept me away from video games in general. However, i was always in the loop knowing what games are good and what not also renting services brought me back into it, since it made it affordable for a student (demos were hard to come by for some reason as most of the great games had no demos). Still no game i rented i spent more than an hour or two of nonstop gaming, however this all changed with this demo. (i stayed up until 7 am this Thursday (weekend here in Saudi) playing this damn drug. have not happened since MGS3)

Man the moment i picked up the controller it just felt right and the more i play the better it got. It never felt as good using the Analog stick playing a footy game, instant control and precision like responding to the smallest of touches especially holding R2. Dribbling in this game is a joy!!

As for passing i could never have dreamed that they would make it this balanced. I have always hated the on rail thing since the ps2 days and felt that so many great plays in my head i could not do simply due to the control mechanics not allowing me to. The freedom of passing in Fifa almost converted me but it just never seemed there is too much depth to it (used semi-manual by the way). Tried to use all manual but it needed too much practice just to be able to do normal short passes, which should be the easy ones to pull off and real skill should come in play when trying to make more the elaborate and Xavi or Scholes like passes, klashman69 expresses my feeling exactly but to be honest i would take his word more seriously than mine as i never bothered to spend enough time with manual but just didn't feel it would matter at the end as after being a bet decent in it i could see its unbalanced.

So what i wanted was a game that offers you the freedom of passing the ball where you want and how hard, but at the same time factoring in the players your passing with and the kind of pass your making, so if its a short pass its easy and natural where a smaller margin of error (and contextual error) factored so its possible to miss a very easy pass if you dozed of thinking about what it feels like inside Megan Fox. This i feel is achieved to a very high degree in PES 11, i just almost always do what i want to do not forced to deal with restricted avenues and rails as in past pes games (even the PS2 ones), also factoring in individuality and passing stats (Xavi and De'Alssnardo are a joy to pass with).

all in all passing in this game is ACE!!

There is so much more i want to share with you guys about this game that i love, but gotta get back to work. More to say later.

Sorry for the lengthy impression given its my first post (not really but i forgot my older user name and i was not that frequent of poster even then so doubt you guys would remember me).

Simply couldnt resist showing you guys this video which i filmed last night, demonstrates the manual spinning mechanic of pes2011.Please read the description which explains how to do this if you havent already discovered it for yourself. Also sums up why i love this game which for me is OPUS!!!.

Please also look at my perfect striker vids and see the similarities of this and PES2011.

Has anyone else noticed the opposition players clapping goalkeeper saves and walking up to the keepers to congratulate them,SUBLIME!!!

Sorry but you are living a lie. Spin on crosses is automatic. And you can't spin on shots ... show me a video where you explain how to get spin on shots and you do it by urself not by accident.

I have the PC demo and spent 2hours last night to try how to get spins on shots. It doesn't work like in PES2010.

After having little faith in the direction of PES, I must say I've got that magic feeling in my testicles once again. My hands are moistened within minutes of booting up that honorarium of a demo. Pre-teen style excitement has been restored.

The passing, shooting, movement, AI.. They're as good as I can have hoped them to be, following the first videos I saw of early development. Three or four matches on the demo every night, at least. Bayern's continued angst with Barcelona being a dominant feature of the missus's night, whether wanted or not. Messi's battle with garden gnome features - ongoing. Love it.

Refs do play the advantage rule, and this game responds to how well you play it,the more creative you are the more the ai adapts and that also goes for the cpu ai.

This game is perfect, theres no scripting, its not contrived and its perfectly balanced.Your never find your self in a situation where your ahead and the cpu ai suddenly plays through you, goals conceded are your mistakes,a touch of genius form the cpu but you always have the tools to counter or remedy any situation if your quick its all about playing the percentages in defence.

Even the keepers are real and organic and wait till you start seeing all the hidden animations like defenders taaping the keepers on the arse for a good save or the opposition players clapping and walking up to keepers after good saves to congatulate them.Playmakers drive the game and sore motivation levels making advanced runs and driving your team, players shoulder barge, block runs, punch and swing out at players. Its all there and the shooting mechanics of the game are so deep and varied you can dip the ball, elevate it and spin it in all directions.

Ive played football games for over twenty years and ive never played anything as well thought out and refined as this, the subtlety in everything you can do is breathtaking and ive only scratched the surface.

That cross is a manual cross using l2 and i make it dip and spin, and yes you can put manual spin on the ball with your thumbstick,be it shooting, through passing, short passing, long passing and heading. Each player has a curl stat so it varies the amount from player to player.

Your talking to a konami vet of twenty years who played the Iss series on the n64(a game built around the analog stick)which had a similiar dynamic so it feels quite natural and easy for me as its hardwired the timing point in my brain.

Also have a little respect and dont call me a lier,im sharing this with the community for there benefit and yours when i could quite easily keep it to myself.

Take a closer look at the video its intentional as the balls travelling away from goal,i spin it inside on the far post.

Spin is added at the point that the power bar powers up and just before the ball leaves your foot and you hold the desired direction of the spin you want while the ball is in flight or travellig across the ground, you can also hit over and under the ball by pushing forward or back relative to the direction your facing and your body and foot position..

this is what I did on my last match, I was spain against bayern

4-5-1

4 standard defender, no change

5 midfielders : 1 DM & 4 CM on a (4-4-1-1) style position not flat 5

1 SS

here is what more important : team style and strategy

support range offensive (around 17)
attack orientation a bit wide (14 IIRC)
switch positions : maximum

strategy, I used quick counter and/or swap wings and/or offensive possession

spain midfielders and sometimes even capdevilla and ramos 'out of positions' (in a positive way) for some moments when attacking, even I scored 2 goals (well, bayern players who actually scored own goals) from my fullbacks that somehow moved & attacked center. (I won 6-0 in the end)

I love this game, using your brain to prepare and some creativity during playing actually matter; unlike FIFA.

but in the end I do realize, that I'd like to see some more move to open spaces by the players like in FIFA :D.

well than it is not working on the pc version. I also played PES since ISS and I also was in the top 20 ranking in esl...
It just seems impossible to do in the PC version. Haven't got a PS3 or xbox to try it there.

Oh surprise, surprise, another who didn't like the game at first loves it! :CONFUSE::))

If you come straight from FIFA (even after all the years of WE I had) it's a real shock to the system, as was going the other way, they are both playing football but they are so many little differences that the first few games mess with the way your brain is wired...><:PIRATE:

Just put the PS2 in the loft but before I had to have one last game of PES5... PES2011 blows it out the water!

I loaded up my ML to find a Champions League final against Chelsea ready to play, 6 star difficulty. I was playing with a salary cap of 600 so my team is not made up of superstars, I won 2 - 0 and it was pretty easy. I think what made it so is that because you are locked into certain directions it limits your passing/shooting/movement options. I really missed the 360 movement and at first kept on holding L2 to play passes.

There was no weight shifting, players turn in any direction pretty much in an instant.
Also Player individuality did not feel very pronounced, only a few stood out in certain situations.
The speed at which they controlled the ball when recieving a pass was lightning, this really stood out after playing PES2011 and coupled with the fast turning made the pace seem quite manic at times.
Goalkeepers were a little too good, especailly Cech. I do not remember any parrys, all shots were caught.

PES has come really far since then and people that are waiting for Konami to recreate these "glory days" will never get what they want and even if they did would probably be dissapointed or playing FIFA. The level of realism is now far greater and if they had to make 2008, 2009 & 2010 what they were to get here then its been worth the wait.

I don't get it, haven't you said in this forum that the AI in PES 2011 were not alive enough not making space and making runs at the right time... Now you say it's all perfect?

I also very much love this demo and feel that there is way less scripting going on than in older PES and all Fifa-games but I also must state that the attacking-AI of the CPU on top-player in the PC-version is weak, completely tame.

I played with Bayern against Barca and Barca couldn't make a single goal in four, five games... mind you the defense was top-notch I had problems making goals myself usually we end nil-nil or 1:0 for me... but the CPU-AI poses no threat at all in attacking and I'm very bad at defending still not being intune with the game, still learning.

With my "still-learning-the-ropes"-phase they should skin me at top-player, so there is clearly something wrong with the attacking-AI, wouldn't you say?

I'm becoming really annoyed with the camera. Hopefully you can chose the old one in the full game.

Which camera, wide or normal long?
I love the wide one, it should be easier to play cos you can see more of the pitch - but some how I find it more challenging :CONFUSE:
The normal long is very much like PES 2010, too much so I think.

About the stutter, maybe it's a coïncidence, but i have the feeling that it only happened to me playing with Bayern against Barcelona.
Not with the South-American teams.

Could it be the stadium? I seem to remmeber that in a past version there was something similar in one particular stadium (and i don't mean the African pitch years ago, that was not a stutter).

Look what i did :)

Great post, I've been saying this for ages. For people love to romanticise about the glory days, and how great PES 5 still is, in comparison to next gen, it's pure bollocks. It's old hat. Groundbreaking in it's day, but that ship sailed a long time ago. It's also a very common excuse for PES ex pats that moved to Fifa. Absolute twoddle. PES 2010 was technically streets ahead of PES 5, I dont care what anybody says.
