It's all marketing these days. You see it often in the Premier League and Championship. Teams wear their away kits when they have absolutely no reason to.

For instance, I was at the Ipswich v Middlesbrough game last season and Boro wore their black kit....

Rangers were ineligible because they were still in administration at the end of March, and weren't given a licence to play in Europe. Therefore the team in 3rd took that Champions League spot, that club being Motherwell.
