My laser sucks, will a hard drive work?

Just installed WE 9 on the HD. First time didn't work, then i remembered that WE 8:LE had MODE 3 enabled so i did that with WE 9 and ZING! it worked. :D I play all my games on the HD, much easier and it doesn't require disk swapping.
 
Does this work with the new slimline ps2? Does it need to be chipped?
