I remember buying a Nintendo 64 JUST for Goldeneye with one of my part-time pay packets when I was working for Tesco. I bought the console, 4 pads and the Goldeneye game - I was skint for the whole month but it didn't matter, my parents house was always packed with my mates all arguing about who was supposed to be playing next!

Good memories. :)

A game I never played, and a game I was looking forward to playing on the 360. Bar-stewards.

In other news, Burnout 3 has just been released on Xbox Live as a backwards-compatible game. I'm so tempted to get it. Anybody else?

I loved goldeneye - used to play with mates. One of my mates was really good though and he used to get the Golden bloody gun and kill me stone dead within seconds!

Don't know about burnout 3 - the new ones coming out and I might get that - if other people on here were to get burnout 3 and we raced - then I might be tempted though - how much is it?

The following could apply to any recent console but I've stuck it in here because it's the 360 I own.

What is the quickest cheapest way to set the 360 up with 5.1 sound?

I'm clueless with this stuff, there's an optical out on the 360 cable and an optical out on the TV, so I'm presuming I need two optical inputs on a hi-fi (or a receiver - I don't quite know what that is but I've read people say it a few times).

The hi-fi I've got now is five years old, it's got an optical out but no optical in. It's about time I chucked the thing. I've got two big (20") speakers already, but they're wires on the end (they need to be plugged into the black/red clip squares, if you know what I mean). The TV has an internal speaker but it's about as resonant as a fart in a bottle.

I'd prefer it if at least the back two speakers were wireless, otherwise it would be a complete bastard to set up in this room. If I had to pay extra for that then so be it, as long as it doesn't effect the quality (I was given a pair of RF wireless headphones for Christmas and honestly, they're horrible).

I have the VGA cable yeah, which has an optical out socket on the adapter.

That kit you've pointed out there looks good but there's no optical input, according to the first reviewer.

I'm not clued up on this stuff at all, so much so that I don't even know if I'm looking for a hi-fi or a "receiver". But I'm assuming the optical input bit will make it expensive.

Cheers for that link DJ, I'll have a look around it!

I have my PS3/360 plugged into a DENON 2308 A/V-Receiver.
PS3 ist connected via HDMI, 360 is connected with optical audio and YUV.
There's also a Philips set top box connected via HDMI and an old Pioneer DVD/HD recorder is connected optical(audio)/S-Video

The Denon is running Bose ACOUSTIMASS 6 speaker system (5.1) I had to go for the expensive speaker system, as these are the smallest speaker around available in WHITE (my missus doesn't like any kind of "technical gear" in the living room. Any other speaker system from KEF, Teufel, Canton would also do a good job.

Another very good A/V receiver is the Onkyo SR-605 (Price/Value!) The bigger systems from Onkyo/Denon/Yamaha have been tested very good, but they are high end and so is the pricing...

If you don't want to install 6 speakers the Yamaha YSP-1100 Soundprojector does a good job. You can plug your console directly into the YSP, so no receiver needed

Thank you very much for that reply, I appreciate that a lot.

I looked around for four hours last night, I've found three systems that I can get relatively easily but I don't know which to go for (these are the most expensive I can afford as well - I'm not rolling in money at the moment).

SYSTEM A: Logitech X-5500 (£200, includes all speakers)
SYSTEM B: Denon AVR1507 (£120, no speakers)
SYSTEM C: Yamaha RXV361 (£120, no speakers)

I know that first system isn't a dedicated receiver kit and so it would probably be worse (and more expensive) than the others, BUT, while I already have five speakers that came with my old hifi (two 20" side ones that would blow your ears off, a centre, and two satellites), I have no subwoofer. And I don't know if these Aiwa speakers will be any good with Denon/Yamaha equipment.

Any suggestions?

Hey Jack, I think that first one is a dedicated receiver box. Kind of like the Creative system I have. It's the little box that looks like another speaker, but isn't! If you look at the closeup photo you can see its got the input select buttons and volume control etc.

And for this reason, the first system is the option I would go for. I personally don't see the point in paying £100 just for a receiver?

Because the quality is, apparently, always better through a receiver as long as you have the right speakers. Trouble is I don't know if I have the right speakers, but I could buy that Yamaha receiver with speakers (the whole kit is called the AV61 I THINK) for £200.

Plus, the receivers have two optical inputs instead of one which means that, if I ever had to get a PS3, I could connect to the TV via HDMI then output via optical into the second port of the receiver. If I got that Logitech kit and then got a PS3, I wouldn't be able to permanently rig both to have surround-sound.

I know that it's probably more sensible to get one of the receivers, I'm just nervous that the speakers I have would be crap with it (and I don't have a subwoofer).

I don't, but you never know what the future holds - I've learnt from having computers from an early age that for as long as you can afford it, FUTUREPROOF YOURSELF. If you can double the amount of connections you can have, that can only be a good thing.
