Microsoft Xbox 360

im taking my 360 back tomorrow to get a replacement but i was wondering do i get to keep my hard drive cause it has stuffed saved on it

Take the hard drive out, don't take it with you when you get it replaced; it's the 360 with the fault, not the HD, and if you leave it plugged in you might get a chav at the back of the shop taking it off and taking it home with him.

I've weighed up all the evidence, and quite frankly, the 360 is gonna win this.

I just need a few things, how much is Xbox Live?, is it easy to set up? how do I go about purchasing things on the Marketplace?
and finally when is the HD-DVD add on coming out here? how much?

Xbox Live costs 5 pound a month, or you can buy a yearly card at 40 quid in the shops, however usually you can pick up cheap subs somewhere else, look fro old XB Live Starter packs that got bundled with the likes of PGR2 or PES5 or even FIFA 2005, those work just as well, or even on ebay Live subs for a year go around the 20-25 quid mark.

The Marketplace is a hateful thing, but everyone will be doing the same this generation from Live to Ninty Virtual Console and Sony's Singstar and GT thing. You can buy over Live with a credit card, or again buy 2100 points card from online or game stores for about 17 quid, you enter the code and get you MS points to do with what you want, be it buy themes, or pics or Live Arcade games or extra content for some games.

The HD-DVD is rare in the UK atm, Game arent sending any out to stores from what I heard and are only selling it online, so maybe best trying to source it from online retailers, but cant help you too much with that as it aint something I know about, maybe Jay can help you with that one.

As to who will win, far from over, atm, each console has a different agenda from what I can see, Wii is trying to get more new people into gaming, the 360 is just starting to get some decent games, and while the PS3 aint out yet, it's trying to cover alot of bases regarding Multimedia connectivity, while trying to future proof itself with Blu-Ray.

After going back to the PS2 pad the other night (as stupid as it sounds), I'm really missing it now. If it had the 360's triggers (and not the God-awful tacked-on PS3 ones), it would be the perfect gaming pad. It's just "right".

But still, I'm not going to even look at a PS3 until I see a distinct advantage over the 360, bar being a PC and a Bluray player (as I just don't need it). I was just mentioning the controller thing because I was playing PES on the PS2 the other night; a million times more precisely than any 360 game.

thanks for the information, this may shock some people who know what I've been like regarding 360 vs PS3, but I'm gonna copy and paste something I wrote on another forum to explain why I'm gonna get a 360, so please just reply with a few comments to just tip me that bit over the edge and into the 360 corner

'I've been so focused about getting a PS3 that I've just discarded the 360 and quite frequently said it was shit (apart from Xbox Live)

but the rate at which Sony are making PS3's atm means that I'll be highly unlikely to get one anywhere near the European launch, I'm supposed to be on a list for the second shipment at a local game store, but since Sony decided to dick about with us Europeans (AGAIN), it's all been screwed up and I just cannot be arsed with them anymore.

Plus I love PGR3, and I assume that still has a massive online base. I've played GoW and it is amazing, I'll give them that, so I wan't to go online with that, plus it has the ports like the PS3, but that look better now due to more time with the 360, etc.

The thing is, the prospect of being able to go out and buy one, right now, because I have around 500 pounds (saved for PS3), means that I can walk in a game shop, pick up a deal where I get the premium system, GoW, and either Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (which I would cause I love it on PS2), or SvD 2007 (which is meh cause it's wrestling/I haven't liked the previous SvD's), and then that leaves me 200 pounds to get another controller and 3 games, perhaps four because I get 50 quid a month allowance.

so I dunno, is it just too good a deal to miss out? for a plagued, and probably eventually dead console? cause I have a feeling that as much as I want a PS3, I'd be easily as content with a 360, and I could pick up a PS3 when it goes cheaper anyway. (this last paragraph has basically made it a no-brainer)'

The PS3 will be great, but it's took the 360 this long to become a great machine and I reckon if you get £50 a month, by the time the PS3 has great games and less bugs, you'll be able to afford one. In the meantime, the 360 is fab.

A note though; the PGR3 community isn't as thriving as you'd think. I sat online for an hour the other night and in that time I had two races (one of which the twat quit half way through). Trying to get a game (especially with more than one person at a time) is a nightmare.

Gears Of War is, in my opinion, the best shooter ever made. But it lasted just less than a week before it was completed (two hours a day over six days = 12 hours to complete).

Saying that, however, they're both fantastic experiences. PGR3 on a widescreen HDTV is just jaw-dropping, as is Gears Of War (just wait until you get up to the last few levels). Every game has fantastic visuals, actually (apart from PES which looks like a bowl of crap, but you'd expect that from Seabass, and Rainbow Six Vegas which looks dated, but is still a fantastic game, especially in co-op).

It's basically a PS3, now. And if the PS3 does turn out to be better in a year's time, then you can sell your 360, gather your last two month's allowance together and afford one easily.

well like I said, if the PS3 comes down in price, when the good games are out, then I will get one, and your last post makes perfect sense, it really does.

I've got the TV sorted out, the Samsung one that I posted a picture of in a 'HDTV for 360' thread or something like that, so I don't need to get one of them, and if needs be then theres always a 43" Pioneer HDTV in the main living room that I could sneakily use

I suppose that if the PGR3 community isn't thriving that much anymore then I'll jist stay offline, but maybe if you are up for it, then we could hold a few races from time to time, maybe including more members here if theyre up for it.

And then of course GoW, I've heard from all over the place that it's short but amazing, so I'll get it and play it, because after playing on it a bit at a friends house, I'm sold. Plus I know a lot of people who I've talked into getting a 360, especially this christmas since the PS3 is delayed/mega expensive, so I'd have them to play and compare experiences with as well.

£400 for a sega saturn in 1995 tells me ps3 prices are not so bad, you pay for technology. I just hope xbox360 keeps the good stuff comin so I have no need to part with such an amount.

got my new 360 today and it's a new one it was made in october the power adaptor has a different style plug and it seems more quiter than my old one
and i got rainbow six vegas and the live vision camera

is the ethernet cable included in the premium pack all you need to get the Xbox Live to work on 360, cause I heard you need three.

and how long is the cable?

Need three what?

Yeah, a pretty long, I would say 2M minimum ethernet cable is included in Premium pack.

The 360 recognise whether your 360 is horizontal or vertical and changes which fans are in operation accordingly. YOu could test it out, but make sure you dont have a disc inside or it will scratch

thanks very much

GoW is utterly fantastic, if absolutely solid for an Xbox/360 n00b

EDIT: does it autosave?
EDIT2: we'll see cause I've just turned it off, I love the way you control the turning on/off and the disk tray with the controller

when you leave a disc in the 360 overnight or just when it's off when you turn it back on it can stratch it
DON'T LEAVE A DISC IN WHEN YOUR 360 IS TURNED OFF
