Microsoft Xbox 360

Good for all those with televisions that support 1080p, I was thinking about getting one soon (Sony 40W2000).

Wont make a huge difference but good to have anyway.

I clicked on the 1st link and it still works. I cant see how a Dash Update will give us 1080P.... it would be great if it does means TG cant brag about PS3 being 1080P and the 360 only doing 720Progressively and only 1080Interlaced.

At their pre-TGS press briefing in Tokyo today, Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 will support 1080p content through a software upgrade. The "p" stands for progressive.

Microsoft's announcement -- which effectively parries Sony's bold claims regarding the merits of 1080p high definition content or, as Sony calls it, True HD -- is their latest move seeking to blunt the impact of the oncoming Sony PS3 hype-train. With the True HD cat de-clawed, Microsoft's mantra of choice will appear even more appealing. It's another bullet point taken out of the next-gen console war equation.

Joystiq spoke briefly with Shane Kim, General Manager of Microsoft Game Studios, about their announcements in Tokyo today. First off, Kim clarified that, while the software patch would upscale all content to resolutions as high as 1080p, Microsoft themselves had no plans to produce gaming content taking advantage of this ability. He was similarly convinced that very few other developers would see the value in producing 1080p games, with the singular exception of Sony's first-party studios, eager to validate the value of the capability.

Similar to the way the Xbox 360 upscales original Xbox games from 480p to 720p/1080i, you'll be able to enjoy your existing Xbox 360 games at the new resolution. As if you needed more proof that Microsoft's adoption of high definition HD-DVD is little more than a strategic move to limit Blu-ray's potential sphere of influence, Microsoft's 1080p software upgrade will also remove some of the value of their upcoming HD-DVD add-on by upscaling your existing DVD movies to HD resolutions, including 1080p.

So, Microsoft just announced that the Xbox 360 will play your existing DVDs back in high-definition -- in addition to being able to play back legitimate HD-DVD content if you're interested -- and they're gonna do it in 1080p. In the bullet point war, Sony better hope that extra Blu-ray disc space is worth it; they'll have a chance to prove it at TGS this week.
Little more info.

I hear it's against the DVD forum rules to upconvert DVD over component so I guess that feature is just for VGA unless MicroSoft found another way... It doesn't make much of a difference anyway, just would be nice. :)

Guess we can expect that multi-platform games (like Virtua Tennis) will be in 1080p on both consoles.

JayM depends who does the Xbox 360 conversion. I think you will find VT4 will be 1080P on PS3 but not on Xbox 360.. Like it matters anyway, like someone said unless you have got a nice big Projector Style Screen your not going to notice much anyway.

Not really. I have seen 60" TV's and the difference between 720p and 1080p is quite noticable, but not many people have that big TVs

Anyway, $180 dollars in Japan for HD-DVD player, I hope it is £120 or so in UK! But I have that feeling it will be £200.

the 1080p news is great, but its hilarious to see all the MS fanboys suddenly get happy over it after saying there was no point

Its also a bit of a surprise seing as MS has always played down the importance of 1080p.

That guy is a legend. He's been making portables for years. He actually made the first "PSp".

RuneEdge, you should use Gordon Strachan's other classic in your signature (as Gordon walks by after a match) Reporter: Gordon, can we have a quick word please?
Strachan: Velocity.

Brilliant.

Why? It's taken 3 months to build, and costs a ton more than a regular machine. With all the time, money and effort spent on it if anything it's probably more reliable than the one you buy in the shops, I bet it runs cooler for a start.

Looks absolutely amazing...

www.joystiq.com has reported that Xbox 360 will support 1080p through a Live update later this year (probably leading to all new 360s manufactured with 1080p built in).

It also says that 360 will be able to upscale any content (Xbox games, Xbox 360 games, DVD) to 1080p.

Surely if a game like Halo 3 was developed for 720p and maxed out the 360CPU it wouldn't be able to be upscaled?

hey guys having some probs with me xbox 360

whenever i put any dvd in it reads the disc but doesnt load it, it simply says open tray on the main menu, and when it finally does try and load after about 20 times of trying i then have an error message saying attempting to read disc. is this a common prob, manyone else had it?? or is my 360 fucked?

cheers guys, need to get it fixed cos some great games coming out for it soon

There might be a seperate componenet in the 360 that handles the upscaling, or there may not be.

Your 360 is fucked (yes that is a professional term) sent it back to mickysoft and get them to sort you out with a new one. Mine packed up twice. don't tolerate any errors when they will rapidly replace it for free.

Its getting to a stage where if my 360's DVD drive goes pear shaped ill strip my 360 Down and replace the DVD Drive myself. The 360 is basically like a PC on the inside and you can replace the DVD Drive without too many issues.

Yes it looks amazing and lets not take away from that but its a radical change in design putting everything in one smaller thinner unit and the 360 has enough problems as standard keeping the temperature down.

New XBOX 360 bundle available from tomorrow.

£300 (includies premium xbox 360, Project Gotham Racing and extra wireless controller). Now that is very good value.
