Manchester United Thread

Antred, I couldn't agree more with you. Good post. Replacing Fergie is gonna be nigh-on impossible if you ask me.

In other news, Ronaldo has won PFA player of the year award and I put £100 on him getting it 2 weeks ago (at 5-1 odds!). Happy man tonight! :)

Have you also seen the PFA premier team of the season?
PFA Premier League Team of the Year 2007:
Edwin van der Sar
Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra
Cristiano Ronaldo Paul Scholes Steven Gerrard Ryan Giggs
Dimitar Berbatov Didier Drogba

then Daglish, all supremely talented and motivated managers who had an eye for picking quality players.

correct me if I'm wrong but I always thought that Dalglish was the beginning of the end for your dominance when he bought players like Speedie, etc. Souness was just the icing on the cake.

Dalglish did indeed buy Speedie and Jimmy carter (remember him!) but there was only really carter that didnt cut it and smacked of a panic buy, just before Dalglish quit. Speedie did really well for us. Scored on his debut versus United, scored 2 in a derby and grabbed a few more at the backend of the season but lost his place when souness came in.

Apart from Carter i cant really think of anyone he bought that was really poor, Rosenthal helped us to a league title, as did Staunton and Borrows and Hysen.

Souness on the other hand.....Dicks, Stewart, Walters, James, Tanner, Piechnik, Ruddock to name but a few....

Sorry thought that team was a joke to be honest. Picked by SAF?

Why is VDS in there? Why Neville? Evra? Berabtaov? Gerrard? Vidic?

Wheres Finnan, Carragher, McCarthy,Kuyt, Clichy, Doyle, Essien, Taylor to name but a few?

Vidic?

I don't see any reason why those two would be picked above Vidic or even any of the United defenders.

Berbatov has been pure class.

David James would be my choice for the goalkeeper. :)

VDS has been SUPERB this season. You guys seem to forget the games pre-Xmas. He has won us many games. Neville - find a better right-back at the moment. Evra - Had a storming season. Berbatov has been OUTSTANDING, Vidic has been solid at the back and Gerrard has been/always is quality.

I dont forget the games pre xmas but how many clean sheets has he kept compared to reina or Cech? David James has also had a storming season for Pompey.

Gerrards quality but if we are talking form for the season, he's way, way off and shouldnt be in there. Im not being biased here either but has anybody been more consistent in form for the last few seasons than Finnan and carragher? Solid, reliable and consistent game to game. Both are vastly underated. Evra i havent noticed but then again when i think of left backs not many spring to mind.

berbatov? Started playing well two and a half months back. The guy has scored 9 goals. Against that kuyt has scored 12 in the league and has about 7-10 assists.

but i guess its all about opinions.

I would have liked some smaller teams players to get a mention, i mean Benni mcCarthey has been outstanding this year and Doyle of reading. In fact quite a few of Readings players have done well.

Finnan is actually the best league player in that position according to opta, and at the same time liverpool highest rated player overal. He's been solid and has a few assist aswell as making space for pennent regulary so he can do his thing.

And how essien hasnt got in the team?! Easily one of the best chelsea players toghether with cech and drogba. He's been immense, so glad he's suspended for the first CL leg!

The entire back five for United was picked, despite the fact that Liverpool's back five have kept 5 more clean sheets.

Barbatov and Vidic have been awesome this season. Not sure what Neville's doing there though. Evra's been great too but I wouldnt say theres no one better than him so he's another that shouldnt be there. VDS hasnt been anything special but I'd say thats because he hasnt been tested enough with the way we've been playing. I'd probably replace him with James seeing how Cech was out with an injury for so long. Cant really argue with the Man Utd players in midfield but I'd replace Gerrard with Essien.

James/Friedel
Finnan, Carragher, Vidic, Shorey
Ronaldo, Essien, Carrick, Giggs/Matt Taylor (not sure of Taylors true position)
Drogba, Berbatov

and on another note, only 10 of our players trained today, we're fucked!

Yeah, figuring tomorrow, against one of the best teams in Europe (and who are finally playing well) we'll line up with:

----------VDS-------------
-Fletch-Wes-O'Shea-Heinze-
----Carrick---Scholes-----
-Ronaldo--------Rooney----
--------Giggs-------------
-----------Smith----------

Odds of Scholes playing next match? I'd say nil. He's going to have defensive duties to do tomorrow and we all know what that means. (he only needs 1 yellow to be suspended) So the second leg, unless a defender gets fit, will presumably mean that Dong has to come in, move Giggs or someone back into midfield. It's craziness...

No Scholes?!?!?

I personally think Scholes was the one making everything tick in midfield, not Carrick. I know Carrick is starting to score more now and getting a few assists too but Scholes has consistantly been the irreplacable link between our attack and defence.

Carrick always seems to be the one who is 'there' though, always seems to be stopping an attack or starting one, in the right place at the right time, Scholes seems to go missing and be a passenger at times

You either havent been watching properly or your memory is limited to the second half of the season. Carrick was pretty shit last year and only just started justifying his price tag. Scholes on the other hand has been consistant all season. Many would argue that he's been our best player this season. Theres a reason why he made the team of the year and Carrick didnt.

He certainly has, when we have ripped teams apart its usually down to Scholesy's movement and range of passing (Similar To how Gerarrd plays for Liverpool)

Good luck tonight lads, although not to much as im hoping for a 2005 repeat ;)

Hopefully it will be a great game whatever the outcome, as tommorows doesnt look like being anything other then a cagey 0-0.

I think today was Chelsea's best chance by far. Even if Chelsea beat Man Utd when they play eachother, Man Utd will beat West Ham (surely) and then that will be that.

no it wasnt for the big teams its never easy to come here

non of the top 4 have beat us hear 3 draws and beat liverpool

anyways good luck to united for the rest of this season i prefer man united win the title than chelsea .
