Manchester United Thread

but if u consider just top teams, i'd say that english top teams were better than spanish, italian, french and german top teams this year.

Agree, besides the top 4 in england and a couple of mid table clubs the rest are pretty poor. Everton's shortlived european adventure highlighting this (and they are now 6th!). And the same for bolton, negative football and with them playing arsenal next they could get to 4th! Even though boro got to the uefa final last year the difference in level between them and seville was very apparent.

First of all, Vannizzlefashizzal, is a very bad (and stupid, let me tell you) exercise, to associate what happened last week to "italians problems in general".
i often read u english guys blaming other people for generalizing and associating every football fans problem in england with hooligans... and i agree with u, it's very stupid..... but it looks like u do exactly the same thing when it's about italy.

If you read my post, I did say that we we're also culpable..

To say my comments we're stupid is pretty insulting, did I miss something?????

Did The Whole Of Italian Football Get Suspended This Season Due To Continuing Violence???

Both Policeman and supporters have died recently...

Does the city of Rome have major problems with there respective teams??

Just recently Roma had a Champs League game abandoned and had to play subsequent games in an empty stadium because a supporter injured the Referee...

The same also happened to Inter, did it not???

How many eghlish supporters have been stabbed in Italy in the past few seaons, last week 10 fans stabbed, one just because he was dropped off by the taxi at the wrong entrance...

These are just a few of the "recent" incidents, there are so many more we could start a thread about it...

But of course there is no problems with the violence in Italy..

I must have been in a coma and dreamt it all up....

At last someone who can see the problems in Italy. I swear 80% of this forum's members wear Italian-tinted glasses.

Last night proved a lot to me - Roma were way out of their depth.

i prefere to reply just to this statement, as there's another thread about italian football issues :)

it's not insulting, mate. i think i'm quite a reasonable man.... nontheless sometimes i say stupid things.... this doesn't make me a stupid.

the same way, i don't think u're a stupid, and i didn't mean to say u are :)

Feck me, didnt see that coming, I've had to watch the goals a few times today just to make sure it happened...

Disapointing what happened before the game, got to say it wasnt as bad as the media are making out, we had been drinking with Roma fans all day and had no probs, it was few pricks on either side who tried to spoil it...

20 arrests from 76K people, not bad really....

But the game, well what can I say, you all saw it for ya-selves, I've been lucky to see some fantastic european games at OT, games we have won and lost, but that rates in my top 3...

So many good points I cant list them all but heres a few positives to think about...

Apart from Giggs and VDS the rest of the team are in their 20's

Under UEFA rules, from the starting 11 only VDS and Heinze do not qualify as homegrown talent...

Of that 9, Wez, Rio, Carrick, Fletcher, Giggs, Smithy and Rooney are all british...

Fletcher was superb last night, he played a way Scholsey would have not been able to and was perfect partner for Carrick who was also 1st class, SAF had his hands tied on playing Flecther with Scholsey being out but give him credit for playing Smudger, I thought Ole would/should start, but what do I know....

Living in Manchester I have met and drank with Juve, Milan, Inter and yesterday Roma supporters who have all been very well behaved (even at the Juve Milan final there was no trouble) some I still keep in contact with, they tell me all about the problems...

Maybe my comments sounded abit strong, I dont think of the whole Italian people are violent, far from it, and as current World Champions and the history in European/World Football, the footballing pedigree is 2nd to none...

I just feel that this is all tainted by the problems with violence/match fixing/doping...

We had major problems in the 80's, which Italian people know about all too well, this carried over in to the 90's with the national team but has been 98% been stopped in League(s) and also with the national team, it would be good to see one best footballing nations on the planet make steps toward doing the same...

agree with everything u wrote, Van;)
and sorry for my comment, i guess it too sounded a bit strong... and unappropriate :)

fair play mate...

out of interest whats been the Italian media's reaction to last night??

i didn't buy sporty newspaper this morning.... but here u are

http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/paperssay.html

btw, just to give u an idea, do u know how it looks like, when u wake up from a nightmare, still swet and scared..... well, i think this is such a good image of italian media's reaction

afterall, italian media are usually quite balanced and fair, and they all did a "hats off" to manchester utd. :)

Just read that Ronaldo got Man Of The Match, he played well but for fuck sake did they miss Giggsy's contribution....

4 feckin assists!!!!!

his 1st a one touch pass to Smithy from just out side the area...

his 2nd a low cross from the right wing for Rooney...

his 3rd a ball from his own half to Ronaldo

and his 4th again a low cross, from the left wing, again to Ronaldo...

As the most senior outfield player he, not for the 1st time in his career, terrorised the Italian defense.

He has probley only got one maybe two seasons left to beat Sir Bobbys Record but even if he doesnt his name is up there with Law, Charlton, Best, Edwards and Cantona as true Legends at OT.

LOL good description, I know that feeling....

Post match comments from Totti, who befoe the game said it was bigger for him than the WC final (to be fair he is one of the players to have at least some dignity intact)

Totti gutted - sucks his thumb and sulks

"It is the saddest night of my sporting career. I had never lost to seven goals in a Champions League before. Each shot they took, they found the target. We have conceded three goals in seven minutes. We tried to react but in those conditions it was really difficult. I have to thank our travelling fans. They showed a lot of heart by coming here to support us. Unfortunately, we have come across a better team. Before the game I said that Cristiano Ronaldo is a great player. I hoped that we could have limit his play like we did in the opening game, but he has found every punch. I would love to have another opportunity in the future to play another game like this one. But with a different result. I would really want to give something back to our fans."

Lol he had to practically drag his teammates over to the away fans....

Here's the coach...

Roma coach stunned
Wednesday, April 11, 2007

Luciano Spalletti

"It's difficult to explain what happened, especially because the team played well in the first 10 minutes. Then the first time they attacked, they scored. We failed to respond to their enthusiasm and our inexperience cost us dearly against their counter-attacks."

Gotta agree on his 1st point, it didnt look good for us at first.

I like the fact that the game didn't settle and United didn't slow the tempo. They kept fighting for EVERY ball right until the last kick of the game. Roma's feathers were well and truly ruffled, they couldn't pass the ball properly, their star players were not allowed any time on the ball and United were too quick and too powerful! :)

Some wicked reports in the Italian Media today, puts some of our so called sports "journalists" to shame..

Gazetta dello Sport did a five page spread..

"Last night was an epochal beating that Italian football has never previously suffered at the hands of the English," says Roma fan and columnist Candido Cannavò. "Now I run to father Dante to find out what circle of Hell my beloved Roma has fallen into: maybe that of the proud and vainglorious. Conceding three goals in eight minutes could only have happened to a squad that thought it was divine."

Most was obviously slating Roma or claiming bad luck/injuries/suspensions etc..

but the Corriere Della Sera's Luca Valdiserri bigged us up

"This is the Champions League and this is the price you pay on nights in which beauty knows how to make itself ruthless,"

"He who loves Roma has to find the courage to thank his side, however. They arrived here on merit, but found a side that was stronger, more expert, and had already seen many nights similar to this one. Roma fell, it hurt itself, but now it needs to be mature enough not to cry about it."

Also for all our media has gone on about the violence it was obviously small potatoes to the Italians..

Gazzetta's Boldrini and Alessandro Catapano "No knives, no serious injuries," opens their piece tucked away on page five. "At least this is good news."

Speed and aggression was the key element to our huge victory.Roma werent simply up for it.

Mexes and Chivu didnt have time and lost composure.Pizarro was supposed to be the orchestrator but was pressured off possesion.Francesco Twatti was waiting for things to happen. Then they resort to long shots. The only workin Roman was De Rossi, hats off to him for that goal.

Question now is,where do we go from here? Between Bayern and Milan,I prefer to meet them Italians again.Reason being for their lack in speed and aging defence. They are not exactly running at full steam now and it would be a chance to redeem ourselves from a couple seasons back.We can run their defence ragged like we did against Roma.

Bayern would be a different animal. They showed class by beating favourites Real Madrid. They have depth and balance in their squad. They are just like us really, solid keeper, dependable backline, hardworking midfield and quick forwards. They are hot favourites however to meet us in the semis.Lets just sleep on it and wait till tomorrow.

I was in Kyoto for the last 2 days and missed the match. I had my united shirt on and some old Japanese woman came up to me and said "Rooney, Ronaldo, Manchester 8 points 3 points". I had no way of finding out the 'real'score (couldn't believe her)so I've been dying to get home all day.

Amazing result.

Amazing game! Roma really played horribly, and United were at their best.

Was it me, or did Carrick seem to being going forward alot more with Fletcher than with Scholes.

Also, can somebody please photoshop Ronaldo's shirt to have a "-1" next to the seven? I think need a new avatar :D

lol thats a good idea lumlum.

Also I like the Twatti bit phrase :) Ram that 7-1 down his throat! that will shut that wanker up....

Dj

An all English final looks likely to me now and I would love it. :)

Bayern/Milan will be a hard match though.

If this does happen it will mean that in the most recent 3 finals there will have been 4 English teams and 2 English winners.:)

In terms of which team Id rather meet, impossible to say at tthis stage of the comp both have far more experience than we do, with numerous players on each side already having won it...

At a push I'd say Milan would be the most dangerous (especially if they come back from losing 2 away goals) cos they dont have anything left to play for domestically...

I would prefere Bayern tbh,if milan get into a lead against us then they can defend it a lot better than munich can

yeah but milan have always defended well, the only reason roma re where they are in the league is because milan got bollocked and had bout 30 points or whatever taken off them
