Manchester United Thread

I like SAF, but don't think that every decission he makes is spot on. Beckham was a mistake, not signing Ronaldinho was a mistake and I think if they sell RVN it will be a mistake.

TO say he has had a bad season is a bit rich, Drogba has had a bad season, Zlatan has had a bad season , RVN hasnt had the greatest but to say its bad is nothing short of bullshit

I forgot about that, I remember the club testing Ruud at OT after it happened to make sure we wouldnt be effected.

The ronaldinho thing wasnt SAF's fault, it was kenyons fuck up, plus if we had got Ronaldinho we might not have had Rooney and I know who I prefer.

On the footballing side there is no one that can convince me that beckham was a mistake, marketing wise yes but not on the footballing side....

It sounds daft cos of the number of goals he scored but yes Ruud has been poor this season, we gave him a pass last year cos he was injured but there was no excuse this year.
 
I'm not sure that we need RVN at Madrid.

We've got Ronaldo, Raúl, Cassano and youngster Soldado (who has scored almost every time he's played, he certainly deserves a chance). Should Ronaldo go, I'd prefer a younger striker like Adriano, it doesn't make sense to sign a striker you're going to have to replace in a year.

But how many young pure strikers are there to replace RVN or Ronaldo? Not many, certainly... Name some?
 
Vannizzle, Seems to me you're desperately trying to defend and justify every of Sir Alex's actions and decisions. You're a bit too far up his ass, mate.

At Runedge, Stam has been great in Italy. Beckham though not great for Madrid, has still been way more productive than Cristiano Ronaldo has ever been or ever will be. To sell Beckham, man utd best player then, for someone like C Ronaldo? Be honest, was that really worth it?!

Adriano, Martins, Torres,Kuyt, Trevez and Defoe. Im sure there are many others, there are many options, you just got to select the right one who will fit into the team best.
 
I'm with Vann on this one, I think Becks left at a time that was good for everyone involved. He deserved to play abroad, his personal life was taking over and without a certain Russian billionaire deciding he needed a new toy, I'm fully confident with the squad we have that we'd have won at least another prem title.

I think its a similar situation for Ruud at the moment. He's been a great player for us, done his job like a model pro up until the past couple months. But he is 29, and clearly doesn't want United to be his last major club. So he'll head off somewhere big, and probably fight to start, but at least get a new experience. I know we can't replace him, other than Shevchenko and pre-injured Owen there's no one on the planet better at just being in the right place to tap it in. But I get the impression that's not the type of team Fergie is building, it's going to be more reliant on goals from Ronaldo, Scholes and the other midfielders. I just wish he could have left on good terms.

your way off there lad..

no one can prove that him getting rid of any of the players mentioned has been bad for us.

it sounds as though people are desperate to prove that he is/was wrong when really they've got nothing to go on....

on beckham/ronaldo, I was/ am a big fan if beckham and fancy him to return to captain the club, he's a different player to ronaldo so its hard to compare, but when you look at beckham when he was ronaldos age there is no comparison, as he is still improving.
 
Like i said that cheap excuse about Beckham's personal life and all the fame bollox doesnt wash with me. He was producing on the pitch and thats the bottom line. You forget that night when he came off the bench against Real Marid and scored twice in the 4-2 victory on the night in champions league. All this talk of age is rubbish aswell, we have have scholes and giggs in the squad at 32-33 years of age. Just admit it was a mistake to sell beckham, United wasnt better off afterwards. The same thing with Stam, was Blanc much faster and more effective than Stam? And please no blaming Russian Billionaire, cuz Arsenal still won the title when he first took over chelsea and we finished third that season.

So we're not exactly doing badly...

we need at least two CMF's, a new FB, a new CF and IMO a decent keeper to deputise VDS, howard is just not good enough.

The two MF is have is Reo-coker/Carrick

I'd have Chimbonda in to challenge Neville

and to replace Ruud i'd have Gudjohnsen.

Not sure on the keeper tbh.

The reason im touting the players above is cos they would not have to settle in and get used to the prem, which is what we've gotta concentrate on now, europe is a bonus....

Diaara along with Carrick

Torres,gudjohnsen or defore to replace Ruud

I dont care about keeper, VDS is good enough and that Foster guy looks good as second choice

but who is to say we would have been any better had the players stayed, then everyone would have said "fergie should have freshened up the ageing team".

Yes beckham was okay that season, you mention the victory against Madrid but forget to mention how bad he played when Madrid beat us 3-1...

IMO we we're gonna have to give up the top spot regardless.
 
I'm with Vann on those. Think Chimbonda is quite realistic, he's been really good this season, well except his own goal against us, which was really good too ;)

Carrick looks like a good one too, and I think he'd fit in well, especially with the england crowd. Wouldn't hurt his chances of staying in the national squad either.

Reo-Coker - I'm not sold on him. I've seen him play a bit and he's good and young, but I don't know if he's the man to hold the centre of the field together next year. Then again that should be Scholes job. And I've nto seen him play with the likes of ronaldo, rooney and Saha in front of him. More of a prospect IMO.

Diarra - I personally think he's just this summers Essien. Hyped up cause everyone wants a DMF and there are only a handful for sale. Considering all we could get with that sum of money, I can't imagine its good business.

Gudjohnsen - Love it but still doubt chelski will sell him to us.

This summer O'Shea and Fletcher need to go on a ridiculous training routine, the former needs to get some speed and the latter some muscle, if they expect to even be 'squad' players next year. Richardson was brilliant yesterday, that bodes well. Park needs to learn how to shoot but he'll be alright, though i've still never seen him pass more than 10 yards. I think he's a backup option too. I think we're in almost good shape to be second again next year...but I just can't imagine we'll be able to bring in enough people to compete with chelsea's depth.

That season im talking about following beckhams departure was a quite bad, there was minimal improvement. I honestly think we would have been better off with Beckham in the squad. The man fights for every ball, his crosses and long balls are perfect. If you remember that season we struggled for goals and finished off with our lowest goal tally since the premierhip started. We should have atleast kept Veron that season, we had no creativity, ronaldo was a immature brat that was only concerned in showing how many tricks he could do. Kleberson was a lazy ass motherfucker, who spent most of his time in the medical room. Djemba djemba.... well you get the picture! So ultimately ive proved selling beckham was bad business as we were worse off without him.
 
suazo looks like a good replacement, try watch some of his clips with cagliari on youtube. fantastic player, but his age though, 27. i think.

I hear you but the same happened to us the season before he left (when fergie was sposed to retire) we we're awful that year....

United did a poor job replacing Beckham the same way Barcelona did a poor job replacing Figo.

Barça received 60M€ for Figo back in year 2000, and bought... Petit, Alfonso, Dutruel, Rochemback, Geovanni, Christanval, Anderson... all did poorly, and failed to regain status for Barça. It literally took them three years and a half to recover. The difference is that Barça lost their captain and best player having no option to retain him. Real Madrid payed the bill and got the player, Barça did not want to sell.

United's story is different, they sold Beckham for much less money and still lack a playmaker. Beckham was very important for the team, and C. Ronaldo was too young back then to cover his departure. Since Beckham's departure only a handful of players have worked. And thank God United got Rooney, the guy is a superstar, and is to blame for most of this season's moderate success.

Now, having kept Beckham, United could have played this way:

With Park and Beckham exchanging positions at times, and a handful of skilled midfielders set to score or assist Rooney and RVN. There'd still be Smith, Giggs, Ole and Saha in the bench. Beckham's sole presence would have made much less painful the need for a DMF.
 
I'd be happy with Carrick and Nolan for the midfield spots, and if we need to replace Ruud with a predator i'd be tempted to see if we could pinch Robbie Keane.

hahhaahah, now your saying ronaldo sucks. and wasnt worth it, HE IS 21! he will be starting and STARING for Portugla in the world cup... he will be fine and will be a much better player then beckham ever was...
 
So what C ronaldo's 21, he's not adequatly replaced Beckham. It makes it all the more stupid really, entrusting a 19 year old player to be able to take over from Beckham.
 
Ronaldo and Beckham are such different players. Beckham is more a playmaker than a dribbler, arguably the better passer in the world, one of the best FK takers, a constant fighter and a great team player. C. Ronaldo is a 1 on 1 star, a fast, pacey and skilled winger, but a tad selfish and still a little immature. He is more of a Figo than of a Beckham, and still it will be very difficult for him to match Luis Figo and his achievements.

I doubt Ronaldo will be "a much better player than Beckham ever was". He still has to match Beckham's current level of commitment to the team. I'd have Beckham instead of Ronaldo any day of the week... of course, I'd rather have both. :)

Ronaldo was a good signing... but not if you were to choose between him and Beckham.
