Saha blow stuns Fergie
By NEIL CUSTIS

MANCHESTER UNITED have been hit by a major title blow after Louis Saha badly injured an ankle in training.

The French international was carried off in agony after going over on the ankle as he tried to change direction during a drill.

He will miss tomorrow’s game against Sunderland and Monday’s fixture at Tottenham.

Saha, 27, could even be a doubt for the remainder of the season.

He has scored 13 goals in 14 starts since December as United have cut Chelsea’s 18-point gap at the top to just seven.

And Saha also ousted Ruud van Nistelrooy as Alex Ferguson’s No 1 choice up front with Wayne Rooney.

Striker Saha was taking part in an exercise where one group of players try to keep the ball away from another. He tried to change direction quickly but crumpled in a heap and was carried off by two physios.

A United insider said: “Training was stopped immediately. He looked in agony when he went over and everyone looked pretty concerned.

“Two physios were called out to assess him. They carried him off to see if any damage has been done — but it looked pretty bad.”

Saha will be devastated as he is enjoying his best run of form following two years of injury problems.

It now means the onus will be back on 25-goal top scorer Van Nistelrooy.

He was axed for the Carling Cup final after February’s FA Cup defeat at Liverpool. Since then the Dutchman has struggled to regain his first-team place.

Meanwhile, United and England defender Rio Ferdinand insists Wayne Rooney can handle the responsibility of being his country’s ‘main man’ at the World Cup.

Ferdinand said: “He is at the beginning of, hopefully, what will be a great career.

“Wayne’s someone who has got unbelievable talent. He’s clinical in what he does — his final pass, his shooting and his goalscoring, and he’s a real team player.

“Everyone is putting a lot of pressure on him to be the main man but if anyone can shoulder that responsibility, it’s Wayne.”

The FA are currently conducting further interviews with candidates for the England manager’s job.

But Ferdinand, 27, insists the players are not being distracted by the ongoing saga.

He added: “We’ve got to look beyond it to the World Cup, that’s the most important issue at the moment.

“I just think the FA have got to find the right man for the job.

“Sven Goran Eriksson is leaving and we’ve just got to get on with it as players.

“When it’s time for him to go it’s up to the FA. We’ve got no say or bearing on what does happen.

“But as long as it goes to the best man and he brings the best out of the players then that’s great for English football.”

The World Cup starts on June 9 but centre-half Ferdinand is focused on United’s unlikely title challenge.

He said: “You’ve got to put the World Cup on the backburner, though it’s difficult because we’re all fans ourselves.

“You’ve got to be professional and put it at the back of your head and keep it for little silent moments and concentrate on the domestic season with your club, which is the most important thing now.”

Ouh my...Whats gotten onto him? Right when we are starting to erase his Mr Glass nickname from our hearts,Louis Saha is injured again.Poor lad,how unlucky can a player get? Its like a random thingy for Louis.

Oh bad new!!!i was enjoying his football at the moment ,the guy is not lucky at all,it is a big blow for united and France :( he was bringing something new up front with rooney

Oh fuck i cant believe this, its got to be some kind of joke. Well we just have to rely on Wayno and Ruud for the remaining games. Hopefully ruud can reclaim his top scorer spot.

Not 100% on the Saha stories, Custis @ the sun has some good ties at United but I'm gonna wait and see...

It will be a massive blow if he is injured, Ruud was bobbins on Sun and although he's the best finisher we've had at the club since Law I we've seen think his best years...

But I like being proven wrong on those sort of things.

For anyone thats interested, FC United won 4-0 last nite, the 25th win in 33 games.

And that is why we need another striker in the summer. :( That could also be the end of the title race, not sure how Ruud will handle two games in 3 days, and we can't really rest him against sunderland now. Also worried about giggsy, predict fletch will be on the pitch tomorrow night.

I agree, time to give Rossi a shot, sunderland should be a nice one, but we do have to ensure we win!

I dont believe Ruud is past it. The guy still scores a hell lot of goals and his link up play is second to none. I wouldnt worry too much ruud playing two games in 3days either. If United get a confortable lead by half time against Sunderland, he can be taken off. You think it should be walk in the park, since sunderland have nothing to play for and they have absolutley no good players that work hard or anything.

The full extent of Saha's injury is yet to be comfirmed. So im hoping its just a little twinge in his ankle which he can recover from within a week or so.

no news about saha injury on Soccernet... guess its false

Looks like it as hes on the bench for 2moro!

Should i buy the game???

(only if heinze is on the bench)

From BBC -

Rory Delap is prepared to play through the pain barrier for Sunderland following his broken nose against Fulham last week.

Midfielder Julio Arca will be missing with a hamstring injury.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has played down fears Louis Saha will miss the rest of the season.

However, an ankle injury is likely to restrict the French striker to the bench, alongside the returning Gabriel Heinze. Wes Brown is set to start.

Sunderland (from): Davis, Hoyte, Caldwell, Breen, D Collins, McCartney, Lawrence, Whitehead, Delap, Leadbitter, Miller, Stead, Brown, Kyle, Nosworthy, Carson, Murphy, Bassila, N Collins.

Man Utd (from): Van der Sar, Howard, Neville, Ferdinand, Brown, Vidic, Silvestre, Heinze, Evra, Ronaldo, Giggs, O'Shea, Park, Van Nistelrooy, Rooney, Saha.

Thats a name Im glad to see :). Saha not as bad as first made out, he should be on the bench and Brown to start thats an intresting one.

im not too sure about brown starting... i feel we shouldnt underestimate Sunderland... although im not saying brown is not good but Vidic is really good recently

I think brown will be playing on the right in place of Neville. Browns form was also very good before he got injured, thus was keeping vidic out of the line up for a while.

i guess too many good players can be a bad thing too

im guessing SWP to go and duff, maybe Johnson

Well take Duff!

Should of bought him from Blackburn

Do you guys think Fergie has called Sam Allydice to give him some helpful tactics to snuff out chelsea on saturday?

You know what, I knew it would be a draw after the first half was 0-0.

But wouldnt it of been absolutely crazy if Sunderland took one of their chances?! especially the last one at the death...

resilient display by the black cats! fully deserved their point..could have easily won.
ronaldo lol...wat a crappy performance....
:)

Fuck it. Super keeper strikes again. I thought we got over our keeper curse after xmas. I can't believe he blocked that shot by Ruud.

What a fucking joke. That was the most frustrating game i ever seen in my life. I was close to punching my hand through the wall. First half we wasted it playing fancy football. If we played the way we started the second half we would have won easily.
Ruud played shit, evra is fucking shit and ronaldo just pisses me off. What a sham.
Sunderland piss me off, why the hell they playing their hearts out like its some cup they playing for. Goalkeeper pissed me off aswell.
