Manchester United Thread

I'd say yes at this point, since Riquelme would be an expensive buy. You dont want to splash out millions for the wrong guy.
But saying one player is gonna fail because another did doesnt make sense at all.

I'm sure there will be the obvious comparisons by the media - esp if he is not playing that well in some games. Sad to say it, but quite a few fickle fans will be stirred on by the papers and place even more pressure.

Realistically, the two people who can definitely do the job is Gerrard or Ballack. Obviously Gerrard ain't ever gonna go...I reckon SAF should break the bank and bring Ballack

What are you talking about? Barcelona didnt give him a chance, most of the time it was him coming off the bench. And of course there is going to be pressure for any player who joins United regardless wether the midfield is weak or strong. Imo it will give riquelme dominion in midfield and chance to be the main general, since there is no other player currently at united with his stature.

What are YOU talking about? He was a starter for a whole season before being loaned out. He played 32 games, but still failed to settle in the team.

2002: Although he scored five goals in his debut season, he was clearly not settled and agreed a two-year loan with Villarreal CF after a solitary campaign with Barça. He proved a huge hit in 2003/04, helping them to the UEFA Intertoto Cup and UEFA Cup semi-finals.

Huge signing if it happens, but Riquelme is not the same player he was at barça. At Villareal he improved, playing more for the team. At barça qith all the pressure he was constantly trying the beautifull move, dribble, goal.

The Argentinian league is as physical as the Premiership imo - but what I'm saying is that there are other factors to take into consideration.
Yeah. I guess you're right seeing how Heinze sucks ass.

Verons nowhere near as bad as some of you make out. He was shifted from right midfield to behind the striker and back in central midfield over and over again. Ive always thought management handled him poorly and selling him just after he had a blinding pre-season tour of the US, especially as Beckham was also sold was just stupid in my opinion.

Really want us to get Defoe always have like the way he plays and with Tottenham benching him dont see why not really!

What do you guys think?

I have mentioned "apart from the select few"!
So how many players are you judging this on exactly? 3-4 players?
We've named the obvious player who was Veron, who else was there?

As long as Ruud stays I'd really not like us to be spending on another striker. As it stands that's Ruud/Saha/Rooney/Rossi, and the first 3 should reall ybe getting the chance for games as much as possible. Defoe, while it would be nice to get another england squad member in the team, doesn't really give us that much of a boost, given what he'd probably cost. I predict he replaces Henry at Arsenal, personally.

Why are there even rumours about strikers when what we need are midfielders?
Theres no room what so ever for another striker cuz theres also a guy named Solskjaer who's waiting in line too.

I was just asking as i think Ruud will leave as will Henry(only thing stopping him is the racism) i just got a bad feeling after the final

And if you believe the papers????

RUUD ISN'T GOING ANYWHERE!

Christ, aint you lot used to the tabloid crap by now?

Giggs has been linked with Inter and Juventus all of career and which club is he at now?

Pretty much the same article but it kinda reasons as to why south american players can flop in the EPL...

And some famous South Americans (obviously, not all are flops):

Fabian Caballero (Arsenal)
Horacio Carbonari (Derby County)
Juan Cobian (Sheffield Wednesday)
Esteban Fuertes (Derby County)
Carlos Arturo Marinelli (Middlesbrough)
Mauricio Taricco (Tottenham Hotspur)
Diego Forlan (Manchester Utd)
Branco (Middlesbrough)
Emerson (Middlesbrough)
Jose Antunes Fumaca (Newcastle Utd)
Isaias (Coventry City)
Juninho (Middlesbrough, 2 spells)
Silvinho (Arsenal)
Emerson Thome (Sheffield Wednesday and Chelsea)
Nelson Vivas (Arsenal)

The article brings a good point...How come they do ok in Germany tho? :eh:

I agree with Rocky - South Americans don't like the weather, the culture, they struggle with the language. Some of them are dirty, diving bastards anyway - lets look closer to home.

What I'm talking about is buying a big star from another country and then seeing if they can reproduce that magic in England. Like Veron who at the time of the signing was known as one of the best midfielders around but couldnt live up to the expectations. The players you mentioned werent expected to deliver as much as someone like Veron was or Riquelme would.

It also depends on the teams style of play suits the guy, I remember watching Veron for Argentina in the middle of his crap period at Man Utd and he was excellent but everything got played through him...

yeah but mate, veron had a HORRIBLE wc2002 and has never been a regular with argentina since...

I think the main thing with Veron was that he wasnt consistent. Some matches he was out of this world. I remember he played against Deportivo and absolutely ran the match. I think he played what some called 'pass of the season' in that game & United went on to score from it.

Even when he went to Chelsea he played awesome for the first few but then faded away. Remember his first goal against Liverpool? Everyone thought Fergie made a mistake by letting him go, but he was soon proved right.

As for Riquelme, hes a player Ive always followed as I remember AC were thinking about signing him. Thats before Kaka became who he is and Rui Costa became more consistant. I saw him first actually in a tournament that United were even involved in. It was Barca vs United vs Ajax I THINK. He scored two blinders in his first game, and everyone thought he was the perfect repleacement for Rivaldo. But he didnt perform.

Tbh I cant see Riquelme wanting to come to United. Not because of the team but more for the lifestyle, weather etc. Hes playing extremely well in Spain for a team doing well in the league and champions league.

Personally I didnt think Veron was a flop when he was here. One problem is that we just couldnt accomodate his playing style and his stature. The ideal midfield 4 at that time would be Giggs,Keano,Veron & Becks.Ironically we played with a withdrawn forward(Scholes or Sheri) at that time and this kinda obstructs Veron's playing style. We couldnt really utilised him.Veron will shine in a 5 man midfield formation with 2 defensive midfielders doing the dirty job behind him.He left with a premiership champions medal thou...I'd be contented with that.

People criticise Veron because of the price tag (£27M I think) He was class in Serie A and showed on a few occasions his class in the Prem and like some manc fans stated he wasn't always played in his favoured position. Veron is a player you build a team around with and it's the same with Riquelme, if slur alex somehow bags Riquelme he can't make the same mistake again. In saying that you'd still need another decent midfielder and maybe, just maybe it might be Ballack.

06/07 manc line-up ;)

----------------VDS------------------
----Evra--Vidic--Junkie--Heinze----
Ronaldo--Ballack--Riquelme--Park
-----------Shrek--Donkey(c)--------

Mate, are u on crack or just another Anti-Neville supporter? He is our captain,he deserves respect. You put Evra at rightback??? Hahahaha..whatcu smokin' dawg? Anyways,Ballack and Riquelme wont do it for me.I'd prefer Mahamodou Diarra at DM and Riquelme at AM.Maybe IF we get a new continental manager next season,we might change our formation.Thats a very big IF mind you.

Gettin' geed up smokin' dat weed up ya' gets me whagwan rudeboy 123

...On a serious note I'm perfectly fine, don't worry I'm not on crack I think Neville deserves as much respect as a Skunk with diarrhoea, rat faced manc deserves a slap. I say Ballack because he can play DMF/CMF which leaves Riquelme as the AMF plus Ballack is more than capable to chip in with a few goals from that position, just a thought

It seems Ballack chose Inter..... :( Cunts

Random, I didn't think he'd go to Italy, oh well, his loss. ;)

And where is that confirmed? Checked on skysports and nothing on it there. I still have hope ;)

Im not saying its confirmed, but some sources have said that he wants to go to Inter, because many German legends have succeeded there, and have influenced his choice (Rumenigge and Matthaus were both Inter greats).

Rumenigge is in Milan this week too.

What do you guys think of Dirt Kuyt(spelling?) as a possible future replacement for Ruud IF he leaves?
