I disagree, 06/07 he was by far the BPITW and as good as Messi is currently. 07/08 his performances weren't all great but his knack of scoring was. he didnt play CF, he played RW, same as Messi? does this mean Messi's a CF aswell since he's got 30 goals this seasaon?

I think Rooney is probably our most important player but when we need a goal or a moment of magic were always turning to Ronaldo.
 
Saha was the sort of striker who fits into our system perfectly. Wasnt the best finisher but he lead the line with speed and strength which then created the sort of space which Rooney and Ronaldo exploited. Seriously missing that with Berbatov as our frontman and it really shows.
 
Well well...

funny couple of weeks since i last posted...

we keep up our trophy hopes with wins V fulham and inter...

then suffer our obligatory yearly dodgy home game (and yes like last seasons we deserved to get beat) followed by the fulham away game...

would I swap winning the last two league games for progressing in fa cup and CL..

fuck no!
 
I just hope we come out all guns blazing against Villa but I can't see it happening.

Still don't want to bear the thought of Liverpool winning the title, not with us being the other challengers.

If we were having a really poor year and were already well out of the title race, then just maybe I wouldn't mind so much, but they can't beat us like this.

well with villa its gonna be tough...

they will want to bounceback after being spanked at anfield...

(maybe) the problem this season is that we are fighting on too many fronts..

we havent really hit the heights of the past two seasons (in our style of play)...

but yet we have managed to contest every available trophy...

its our league form that seems to have suffered most but due to other title challengers being less effective, we have coasted since late november...

but even after a couple of shock results we are still in the driving seat!

Berba isnt our frontman though, Hes playing the playmaker role, SAF thinks Rooney's best position is right uptop so we signed Berba to be to the playmaker. Hes done ok but will clearly get better next season.
 
Did anyone remember the Sau Paulo v Liverpool WC final? I've never seen such a shambles of a refereeing/linesman performance. I'm pretty sure it was fixed.

You guys might not be playing stunning football like you did in 06/07 but you are definately more solid at the back and so have more of a chance of cleaning up every trophy on offer.

i dont think we want EVERY trophy...

just so happens that we are still in with a shout for the lot, (well not the lot as we lost the super cup game)

i'm not sure if'd like The Prem most (our second 3-in-a-row in a decade)

or defend the CL...
 
Clearly want the league more than anything. even if we miss out on everything else. making it 18 - 18 is a must (Liverpool are also the challengers so it would become 17-19)
 
A nice positive came today, Rooney was absolutely sublime against admittedly poor opposition. He scored two which obviously means he's about to go through a proper purple patch, which is exactly what we need to happen.

Plus lets hope he wants to prove something after his suspension.
 
Interesting point is he did it in the SS role. A lot of people feel thats his best position but SAF clearly doesnt think that but when he performs like that you wonder.

Yeh it is if thats what we do but I doubt SAF will. I think SAF's trying to recreate a better version of Keane/Berba with Rooney/Berba. Also even if Rooney played there would he get that space? I kinda feel its reserved for Ronaldo.
 
You're right about that. But if we're gonna recreate anything then IMO a Rooney/Ronaldo partnership is the way forward.
I think the only question with that idea is whether we can live with the void Ronaldo leaves on the wing.

Ronaldo's not really a winger these days anyway (even though hes playing out there) he obviously isnt performing 50% of his ability right now IMO.

I think we need to sign a Winger in the summer,Ribery IMO would cost a lot and would we be willing to pay that? If so we'll have replaced Ronaldo and brought in a player in his 06/07 mold
 
Ribery is a big ask right now. Almost as much as asking for David Villa.
But who knows, if you look at the wingers we have, we've only got Giggs who isnt gonna last forever, and Park and Nani. So maybe the board will see that and invest in another winger. Park is usually injured for large parts of almost every season so it doesnt leave us with much. As good as Fletcher is, I'd hate to have to see him played wide again. He's only good in the center.
 
I know he's unproven but you guys are all forgetting Mr Tosic. Natuarlly left sided, dead ball specialist, neat on the ball, he could be useful next season.
 
Giggs isnt a winger anymore, dont think he's played there for 2 seasons now? Tosic IMO was a wierd buy, I think he was bought more to help Ljajic settle in who may go on to be Ronaldo's replacement.

Interesting quote from Bayerns General manager

"There will be some development in the next months. What is about to happen at Real (Madrid)? What happens at other clubs? If there is a star-player bought by a club somewhere, the other club will look at targets with that money and probably one target might be Ribery then."

I think unless SAF starts to play Nani he might aswell get rid. no point having him in the squad if he doesnt even feature on the bench.
