Manchester United Thread

Cant see us winning today without Rooney and especially with O'Shea in defence we're bound to give away more than enough chances. Berbatov hasn't exactly clicked yet and with the abuse he will surely recieve today id be surprised if he doesnt get in to a sulk.
Heres hoping Tevez does well and kepps his place though!

Pretty dissapointed. Had thought Spurs would have a go, but they played two very deep sitting midfielders that totally snuffed out Berba and Tevez. Thought we'd eventually turn it on, but Spurs shut up shop pretty well in last 15 minutes.

I guess its a tribute to us that their goalie would rather waste time in the last 5 minutes than pick it up and try to score, clearly not quite at the 'challenging for the big 4' mentality.

Bloody frustrated yet again.

Dropped points when the others have yet again, so its a shit situation to be in.

Berbatov is useless and Carlito cannot work with him.

Ronaldo is twice as useless.

Ughh.

 Gotta love the support United get from you crazy japs ;))

Born in Manchester, lived there for 40 years.

I just found out there are a couple of other guys from Manchester in my city. Maybe we should opena supporters club. I've already converted 2 of my students from Arsenal and Liverpool fans to United.

Like i said previously that hopefully for the next games whether in the World Club Cup or the league that we revert back to our formation, lineup and tactics of last season which means a front 3 of Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez. I dont give a s**t if Berbatov gets in a sulk about warming the bench a bit...we just need to get back to what made us so dangerous last season.

I knew you were from here mate and moved for a teaching job.

I think the main reason we havent clicked is simply last season hangover, I dont care how big of a club we are but to try and top last season or hit those heights just isnt going to happen.

Ronaldo's changed his game way to much for my liking now. was just amazing in 06-07, then we changed his game from a explosive winger to a free flowing goalscorer which worked a treat last year but i just feel we need the Ronaldo of 2 seasons ago were he would run at defenders etc. the amount of times he passed the ball with acres of grass infront of him wasnt like him and has been how he's played all season.

Berbatov was brought in to make us more potent when picking the right pass in forward areas etc. People saying The Holy Trinity need to be first choice need to realise the reason that worked so well was because we had Ronaldo scoring for fun. he isnt this season. Berba does make us lack pace though and probably slows us down on the break but im sure he'll click sooner or later.

Btw thought a draw wasnt a bad result to be fair. we've now played all our tough away games and pretty much set to go on a winning streak. :))

I really thought our boys gave their all against Spurs. We would have beaten Ramos's Spurs but this team is a rejuvenated one.Berba was snuffed out but he was always dangerous on the ball and to perform like he did with all that stick he got...he deserved a pat on the back.Carrick and Fletcher was superb in the middle holding the team together. The back line was brilliant too, especially Rio and Rafa.

I thought Ronaldo and Park should have switched flanks from the start.Zokora was too defensive for Ronaldo and Park didnt do enough to pose a threat to Assou Ekotto.Tevez is still blowing hot and cold and needs to find his form against top teams.

A draw isnt too bad of a result for us.Still third,4 points behind Chelsea and 6 behind leaders Pool.I reckoned we can never see Sir Alex so happy with a goalless draw anytime soon.

Wow, all the big 4 drop points...given others' matches were 'easier' than away to Spurs, guess we should start thinking a bit more positive...

I just had a feeling the irons would get a result today, could of won it at the end too

The position were in is good (Even if Chelsea had won) I think the main issue is the team isnt gelling well, Ronaldo isnt playing like the BPITW, and simply not playing like the Champions of Europe. Hopefully once we come back as World Champions the players will be ready to win it all again :))

No need to hit the panic button just yet. Its when we're approaching the home ties with Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, etc and we still havent reached our top form that we need to worry.

Interesting season, with everyone drawing (last time none of the big 4 scored!). Liverpool haven't been gelling well either, should've kept what we had last season (ie. no need for Keane, although he is a fantastic player..)

God forbid? Surely that would be a good thing? I'd love it if instead of the current 4 there was also Villa, Everton, Tottenham, even Hull up there right til the end of the season, it would be much more interesting!!

Its pretty normal tho really, i mean after two very successful seasons....

we will be better in the second half of the season, and considering some of our performances so far...

the fact we are close to the top two (with games in hand) in the last 16 of the CL (won the group) and in the league cup semis is pretty good....

So our offense is clearly the issue this season, and undoubtedly bringing in the Berb has been part of that. However, given that he is so clearly dripping in ability, it seems bizarre that we can't fit him in. The main problems I see at the moment are:
1. Rooney, Tevez and Berbatov avoid the box like plague. All 3 see more comfortable coming back to the centre circle than plunging forward towards the opposition keeper.
2. Last season Ronaldo was at his best when he was cutting in from the wings, and taking up positions central on the edge of the box. This season Berba is there, with two defenders, so there's no space.
3. Park, for all his effort, doesn't actually produce anything other than being in great positions. Which would be fine if he could finish/cross/pass, but just being somewhere is not helpful.
4. Rooney and Tevez have been very inconsistent.
5. When we have looked vunerable, it seems ot be a result of Ronaldo/Nani not tracking on the wings and offerign support to the full back.

So, for at least a game (maybe Japan?) I'd like to see Fergie try something completely new:
------------EVDS-------------
-Raf----Rio------Vidic--Evra-
-------Carrick-Feltch/Ando---
---Tevez---Berbatov--Rooney--
------------Ronaldo----------

Now I know Ronnie doesn't have much experience playing as a CF, and that this is a position where 'feeling' the last man and making intelligent runs is key, btu lord knows none of other forwards do that anyway. Rooney and Tevez will both put in a shift defensively, and both are creative enough to create. Rooney isn't a terrible crosser, though Tevez is limited. Berbatov can then sit in his little hole without marginalising anyone, and act as a foil around which the others buzz about. Plus it gets the 4 most talented players on the pitch together, which should really come good at some point. And even if it doesn't, it's not like it could produce less attackign intent than the last few games...

We did two deals last week for two serbian youngsters, one to sign in Jan and the other to go out on loan for 6-18 months...

Todays papers correctly report that one of the deals had broken down over personal terms and that the kid was looking for another club...

but on Sky:

Zoran Toric is optimistic that he will join Manchester United in January despite failing to agree a deal so far.

United have already appealed to get Tosic a work permit and the Serbian starlet travelled to Manchester earlier this week to undergo a medical.

However, agent Zoran Pavlovic has now told the Belgrade Blic daily that United have yet to offer an acceptable salary to Tosic.

Pavlovic stated that Tosic would find another club if United did not increase their offer of 150,000 euros (£135,000) annual salary.

Tosic remains confident that a deal can be reached and insists he still wants to complete a move to Old Trafford.

He said: "I believe we will find a compromise with United, therefore I did not think of any other club."

Now we've missed out on two talented players (robben and essien) because of money, lets not do it again!

a couple of players could make the difference to the squas!

VDS on World Club Cup:

"I won it with Ajax but that was just one game and now you play a semi-final as well, so it’s going to be different. We’re there a little longer than normal, so we’ll do our best and hopefully bring another trophy home."

the english media have been pretty down on the World Club Cup...

I think we play on thursday morning and the final is on sunday..

I defo want us to win it, its the hardest comp to win IMO...

bringing the title home may kickstart our season..

@ Vann totally with you on it being a kickstart. Given how lethargic and uninspired we've looked all season, I think this trip might actaully have come at the best possible time. Hopefully our players can realise what it is they mean to people, all aroudn the world, and start playing with some pride and effort.

Then again if we get beaten by Osaka on Thursay, could be pretty embarassing!

No Rooney decisions yet...worrying...

Osaka are really poor this season. Remember, we only ever got a game from a Japanese team in pre-season. We really should wipe the floor with them.

Didn't we draw with the Uwara Reds or someone in preseason lsat year? Can't remember. Anyway...

Ronaldo and Rooney have been cleared by the FA and UEFA respectively, for their petulance. Am a bit torn personally.

Both need a stern talking to, and can't keep letting this happen. It's not good behaviour, and has no place in our team.

That said, I thought the Rooney was marginal (the stamp, not hte flying kick later, which was definitely nasty) and the Ronaldo was stupid but not worth a red (credit to Dawson for not making a meal of it. After watching big JT go to ground clutching his face against WH yesterday, it's clear that even old-fashioned british centre backs are into the old simluation these days), Dawson could have made it a lot worse, probably could have gotten him suspended with more inflammatory comments after the match.

This is the first time I can remember feeling lucky about authourities decisions regarding us. Something must be up...
