Mafia 3 [PC/PS4/XB1]

Another one added to the "it'll probably be playable on PS4 Pro but avoid it until then" list...

Is the game unplayable on the PS4?
The only reason it is getting bad press is because the PC version is so unoptimised and is just a console port.
720 resolution upscaled and only 30FPS.. I seriously doubt if they have been this lazy with the PC version they will patch it for the PRO..
And TBH the game is graphically not very good anyway, so you won't see any improvement on the PRO

My goodness... just came across this:

Was on my buying list for PS4 but now I dunno...
Any of you playing it on the PS4? Regardless of graphics, I'm more worried about the bug festival I see on this video of the PC version. Could anyone confirm if the PS4 version is as buggy as that?

Wanted to buy it since Mafia II is my favorite game but then I see all these bugs and realise it's not worth $60. I'll probably wait until it's $10.

Reviews are all pretty much the same. Atmosphere, character building, music all very good. As well as the story.
But with regards to gameplay it's reviewed as very repetitive (leading to boring when you progress) and even outdated.
It seems to be the same as the beginning of sandbox games, nothing new and they don't do it better than previous games.
The world also seems to be boring with not a lot of ppl or stuff to do.

Shame really as I had high hopes for this one, they certainly did some good pr on it.
Still going to buy it at some point, but will be 2nd hand or when it's on sale.

Those bugs look like they will most likely be in all versions of the game.

Was looking forward to playing this as Mafia 1 is still easily one of the best 5 games I have played, but the more I see of this game it looks like a turd and needs alot of patching.

Can confirm some of those.

Example - using the 'whistle' technique to separate enemies from the pack, easy because they come over one at a time. Made even easier due to the fact no one else (enemies or other NPCs) seems to see you stab someone in the face in broad daylight in a quicktime event.

This means you can whittle down a group of 5 or more enemies without being seen, in the open, during the day, being about 10 feet away from other people. Very very poor AI

This is well and truly a shame. I remember I loved Mafia I and II to bits and thoroughly enjoyed those.

As for the bugs, I was referring to the real bad ones seen on the video, you know, when the character is sinking to the depths of the earth or he's suddenly elevated to the sky and it leads to a mission failure.

This whistle thing or the apparent blindness of NPCs and enemies alike are flaws that the developers leave on purpose - although I don't think they're acceptable on this day and age. It looks as though they're following the Ubisoft school of f*ck ups. You see that stuff happening all the time on AC games and it really ruins the fun.

Speaking of which, Watchdogs 2 is also on my buying list, but playing another Ubisoft game seems a tall order to me now (I've just finished AC Syndicate and on top of the usual boredom there were some forced feminist/socialist/progressive doutrine to boot, along with some historical absurdities that made me very angry).
Although I remember the original Watchdogs being 10 times better than any Assassin's Creed, the boring cycle of side mission and tasks are always there to ruin the fun.

Sorry for venting about those other games, but it really saddens me that developers and publishers settle for unfinished products like these. The gaming industry need a kick up the arse. The hardware is better than ever, but some of the "AAA" games are dumbed down and released full of flaws.

As a matter of fact, I think what determines the "AAA" status is the PR budget they have really. If garbage such as AC is AAA, they have to create another category for games like GTA, Metal Gear, Last of Us, etc.

Right now I think Rockstar is the only company from which I'd buy games with my eyes closed.

Tbh, Mafia 2 lost it's replayability after finishing the story.

And whats with these AAA devs now a days? They make games that still looks like a Ps3 game.

And don't even bring up games like Batman Arkham series, Mad Max, Assasins Creed series....

Did you see how ridiculous their combat mechanisms are? Are we still playing witha freakin NES controller with 2 buttons?

All you do is mash 1 button to beat up everything (in Batman yu don't have to come close to enemies, batman will jump towards them from 10 feet away and start bang boom paw..). No button combinatoon, no nothing. Even Batman Begins on Ps2 was far more enjoyable despite it being a 24 fps mess.

Devs these days tend to make shit arse games. Sorry for being salty..

Mafia 3, PC Arkham games weren't made by AAA devs for one thing, personally I really liked the combat mechanics of Mad Max.

100s of devs, some make shits games, many don't, Projekt Red and Rockstar are top drawer, Bohemia too but I'm obliged to say them ;)

Appealing to the lowest common denominator, the casual kids who want results now and aren't as willing to work for them. They bring in the money, not us older heads.

Sad, it is.

Oh no man, when ou said "I really liked the Combat mechanism of Mad Max" I fell of the chair.
But I guess opinions. Atleast Mad Max is very optimized. :D

And yu are right, not everyone makes shit games. But now a days, I actually fine these cheap indie games more enjoyable. Maybe I'm getting insane lol.

Back at Mafia, hey I actually felt that Mafia 3 has better graphics than GTA V. But I'm judging it from the trailer.

I am so disappointed on how they ruined this series. I still have more fun playing Mafia 1 now although I played that game like 20 times already than playing repetitive Mafia 3.

Just finished this and would thoroughly recommend it.

The story is brilliant as are the graphics and facial animations making it more immersive more like your playing in a film.

It started to get repetitive towards the end and the AI is bit dumb on the stealthy side, but i'm going to go out on a limb though and say as a overall package i preferred this to GTA 5.

Forgot to mention the atmosphere of the game, it opened my eyes quite a bit how racist 1960s Americia was.

It definitely doesn't pull no punches getting that across.

I finished this like a month ago too. I wouldn't say it gets anywhere near GTA V, quite honestly. Also, it felt much more dumbed down if we compare it to Mafia II, which had some of the best shootout sequences. And the graphics didn't impress me in the slightest. In fact, it felt like there were several lighting issues, and I expericend some annoying glitches (some of them preventing mission continuity, which was annoying).
Having said that, the glitches on the PS4 were not as bad as those youtube videos suggest it would get (maybe that was for PC). Plus, the story stood out for me too. The racist thing is very touching to see in a game like they represented it - but it was a hell of a lot like that unfortunatelly. I mean, I didn't live in that time, but if you watch flicks like Mississipi Burning, and watch some documentaries on the Civil Rights movement in the 60s and all the atrocities that really happened... the game didn't put it in an exaggerated way.
Gameplay-wise, the AI is stupid indeed and it's up to you not to overuse some techniques as whistling to call foes (they come one by one to check the noise). Once I started getting my hands on better weaponry, I started enjoying it a bit more, especially the silenced pistol - it felt a bit more like the Hitman series.
What really shines in this game though, is the soundtrack. They've really gone and licensed an impressive collection - and also the original score in the game is brilliant. I just don't get why Hendrix's version of "All Along The Watch Tower" is only in the opening screen and not in one of the game's radios. Go figure...
All in all, I thought this was worth playing, once you get used to it and let go off your possible disappointment at some of the shallow aspects of this game - the story will make up for this if you're patient enough.

Yeah, the graphics durin cut scenes are pretty neat nd next gen. The performance sucked though. But then I have 900p monitor lol, so it wasnt an issue for me.

Not good as Mafia 2 at all. But its worth trying (Even though the game is crap). In some places, especially in day lights, the graphics look good.

Completed this towards the end of last year, was very repetitive and felt a chore in the end.

Story was decent enough, game doesn't come anywhere near the first two.

Went from Mafia 2 straight to this.
It's really poor man.
Fucked up a great franchise

Gameplay was horrible. Even though handgun fire rate was increased, the controls felt very slippery for some reason.
Game was filled with bugs and glitches.

And worst of all, the missions. Repetitive as fuck and boring.

Should have just released the story as a movie instead of making a game.

True,lucky I didn't buy it full price
Love M2 though.
A remaster of mafia 1 on console would be nice
Hopefully they've learned their lesson for/if Mafia 4

Loved to death the first Mafia. Liked the second one but not in a crazy way. I haven't read enthusiastic things about the third one and I completely skipped it. Seems it was a good idea?

Yeah mate, I think it would be VERY worth for you to do it. Now it's been some good years since the last time I replayed it, but imo it's one of those ageless titles you can play in any moment for a good number of reasons. The 30's atmosphere is something so fascinating and well reproduced that I still remember it quite vividly, and of course gameplay and storyline wise Mafia shines.

Only thing is that for how well graphically refined was at the time, you have to keep in mind it is still a game of early 2000's.. so if you are particularly used to the eye catcher of the last gens you could find some problem in keeping your suspension of disbelief looking at how much simpler some details like faces etc. are compared with today standards. Maybe check some video before!
