yes it's real, have you never ran with R1 and turned toward goal? you don't automatically turn 45 and then 90 degrees, you turn at a slower rate, thus giving 16 degrees of movement.
Well, I myself wouldn't call it "true" 16 directionality, since the full 16 directions are only available in certain situations, ie when sprinting. Doesn't help alot when doing close quarters dribbling or such. So I suppose it depends on your point of view.
