Do writers really get paid such a pittance that they have to strike??

In relative terms no doubt they get a pittance, example Hugh Laurie gets $350k per episode for House (yes he's fucking great in it but that's $7.7m US for 1 season).

IIRC one of the main things the writers are asking for is 8cents per DVD sale up from 4cent per DVD.....
