Gran Turismo 5

Re: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

Just had a quick check and ... most big name companies have their cars in games with damage --- so i really cant see where any problems would be.

some of the smaller companies objecting? tell em to go screw themselves

my guess is Poly are talking crap and they just cant add damage because it would mean it would take them 5 years to make the next GT games and then we'd only get 20 cars and 8 tracks - or possibly... they have permission to add damage to certain models but not all... so they again cant be arsed.

Re: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

I downloaded the free GT on PSN the other day and I was blown away. I couldn't believe... How utterly shite it plays. Blow on the stick slightly and the car veers off like it's been hit by a ten-ton truck. Truly awful - what confuses me is that I played Gran Turismo from 1 to 4 and I loved it.

Maybe it is something to do with your set up. I played it a few months back and whilst thoroughly underwhelmed by the whole experience, didn't find it as you describe. The main problem I had was that it was such an insipid experience, bland, lacking in any excitement or sense of realism. It looks nice, sounds fine, but was plain boring.

As for the lack of damage everyone's specualting about, it's probably as much to do with the extra cpu overhead in having to calculate a huge amount of extra physics to have realistic car behaviour during crashes and sort out all the damage modelling. Instead, they opt to use the PS3 power for sublime eye-candy with "non-event" crashes. It just adds to the sense of dullness.

Re: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

Hmmm. 16 Ferrari F2007's around Daytona. Sounds bloody good!

Re: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

I can, because the aim of a racing game is to win, not to crash.

It's a hinderance, a major hinderance in terms of realism, but its never been something to trully stop people buying the game.

And plus the fact, I'd rather have two GT's on a system instead of one GT every 20 years which is probably what it would take considering the level of detail they put into every other aesthetic aspect. I'd rather have no damage at all than damage like Forza or something like that, which just doesn't seem to capture it right.

Re: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

PGR 4 an arcade game Gran Turismo not arcade game not sure how people can say that it rivals Forza 2 in simulation but tbh Forza 2 dosnt stand chance against this game im afraid. Graphically it is like night and day for one more cars on track Forza 2 might have more in your face physics which are good but eveywhere else GT smokes it i enjoyed Forza but GT 5 prologue a better game imo and this is just glorified demo pretty much.

I have Japanese version on PS3 think its fantastic enviroments are abit ropey but still pretty decent especially London. Handling is great also there is 2 different modes Simulation and Proffesional Simulation great for drifting but very hard to get used to and Profesional abit more arcadey and your glued to track. Also there is seperate setting to turn on/off ABS, TC etc car models are like nothing else i have seen in racing game also there quite a few events to do and well worth £18 imo expecially as the UK version had 2 player split added, drift mode, more cars, tuning, and can add more laps for arcade.

I have already got UK one on pre order because got extra content and 2 player split etc. Cant say i care about damage (not missed it yet although can be strange when bump off car) and full game coming out in 2009 has it seriously when you play it you will be blow you away if your not i dont understand why i play on 1080p screen and looks superb.

Cant wait for the full game though going to be immense.

Edit: Forgot to say although i wont be downloading (because no point) GT HD for free off PSN general word is GT 5 prologue is totally different to it so cant really base much on it maybe graphics.

"full game coming out in 2009 has it "

the real GT next gen will have damage?

Re: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

Yes so i read in article a while ago.

Will it also have more appropriate (ie real) physics? I must confess the wife and I were huge GT fans on the PS2 but since getting the 360 we've seen the light a little more in terms of what makes an addictive racer.........

Re: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

With graphics like the Ferrari one above, I think you're mad tbh.

What's the point... if they are in your way just barge them... if your in their way they can do the same... no damage = no need to follow any rules of racing.. no looking after your tyres etc.... It's kiddy racing.. As I've said before it's like having the best looking life like football game without any goal posts or without a tackle button.. Damage is not about driving around stockcar style...

Well imo Forza got brakes wrong although Forza physics are great on whole i think it was overdone quite abit to exaggerate what happening. GT 5/Prologue have brand new physics engine and to me it is superb works very well only thing is you dont have flashy menus like forza to see it happening as much.

Forza a good game but aside from physics everywhere else is totally poor shaders lighting etc GT 5 prologue destroys it. One thing that let Forza 2 down was sheer lack of tracks and it become a borefest after a while i dont think there enough variation but i cant compare to GT 5 as full game not out yet. Plus more cars on track really is plus on GT 5 prologue adds more depth to the game feel like your in proper race you have to play it to experience this yourself. And more importantly it does this whilst running at 60fps and 1080p although it is not true 1080p so i read. One thing that lets Prologue down is tire screeching i think its over done which is shame but its inherant in series i really hope you can either tone it down or turn it off in full game.

Both games have there fors and against i can say what i think but you will just have to judge for yourself at end of day this has been debated to death and so broad views people will share different opinion.

Re: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

I used to be a big fan of GT but on the new one I find it's way, way too sensitive. PGR is an arcade game and even the handling on that is less sensitive than it is on this GT (the free one available on PSN, I don't know what it's called). I was looking forward to it as well...

Re: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

On the official Sony Playstation message board, the guy who goes by the name of skebe is the aforementioned employee of Polyphony Digital. He says that if they want to implement damage in a realistic way, which means simulating every dent differently, they’d have to spend so much time on it that it would be completely out of proportion.

He also mentions that damage in other games is just ’simplified damage’ which isn’t realistic.

This doesn’t necessarily imply that they’re not doing vehicle damage (in GT5), since it’s just an opinion from an employee and nothing official has been brought out, but it’s fair to say that it’s not entirely likely.

We’re not ready to implement damage until they can be shown in a truly authentic way (which is extremely hard work if you think about it).”

Damage in Gran Turismo would make the franchise unstoppable, don’t you think? He responds: “No I mean, really, really, really hard work… to the extent of creating another game, almost. From our standards, what other games are doing is “simplified damage”. You know how [anal] we are when making our games… we would want to simulate every single dent differently.

Re: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

Hmmm surely so called "simplified" damage is more realistic than zero damage... sounds like a cop out, but seeing as there are no decent racers out at the moment and non that I can see in the near future for the poor old PS3, I have resigned myself to a baron 08.

What you got to remember is the one you downloaded is version very early on in development. I would really try Prologue out to see what you think general basis i hear is it much better then GT HD.

From what i have read is there total difference in graphics and handling aswell apparently GT HD handling was more based on GT 4 from what i read. I prefer to use Professional setting as other settings to twitchy but good for drifting.

Well its out very soon hopefully be demo for people not getting it to test. :))

Yes it is but in Forza 2 its half assed attempt at damage and not realistic there video on youtube comparing 40mph crash in real life to in game Forza 2.

I can fully understand why Polyphony Digital would rather wait until they can implement full damage engine.

Now WHY didnt they do this with F1 CE!!!

@ Bingham depends on what type of game you like, yep PGR4 is arcade but you still get some realism with the way the cars handle and I love that game, the cars feel like they have got weight to them and they drive brilliantly. I played GT4 the other day and to be honest it felt like Ridge Racer.. even with Assists turned off, the cars ALL felt pretty much the same and they handled like Ridge Racers Mouse Mappy car ;)

Also the Damage in Forza is half assed I agree, but at least its present and it Affects the car realistically.

I understand some people love it and them graphics are AMAZING! but for someone like myself it hasnt progressed at all since 1999 and I prefer realism. Especially when you play Forza 2 plus the Official MS racing wheel with Force Feedback.. woah!

You played GT 4 or do you mean GT 5 prologue ? are you not jumping to conclusion if thats the case before you played this new game. ?

I think PGR 4 great game for fun but its not a serious racer like Gran Turismo or Forza i like all the games for what they are but GT 5 prologue is the best of them all imo after playing it.

For the record you definitely feel the weight of the cars in GT 5 prologue thats for sure going from American muscle like Mustang or Viper to Ferrari F430 you certainly feel difference.
