Football Manager Series

I think the earlier Football Manager games had fewer features, but the most important ones were there and the annoying and boring ones were often not included.

I keep playing Championship Manager 2007 & 2008 or the old PSP Football Manager games. They are not as complex or time-consuming, but they have all the really important things, from tactics to player transfers.

Ay ay the second paragraph

Honestly, who cares what some (Korean) influencer thinks or does?

Please don't be angry with me, but endlessly posting random Twitter and/or reddit account posts doesn't ultimately change anything about the situation.

It just dampens the mood even more.
For me, at least 50% to 60% of the world of the internet is completely toxic. Especially in the gaming sector.
Fortunately, EvoWeb is a place where this is largely not the case. So here, despite PES and FIFA, there is a rather positive atmosphere.

I've only played FM26 for about 3 hours so far. So I'm probably not deep enough into it yet, but I think you can really overdo it.

I mean, FM26 has been out for a week now + 2 weeks of beta. And day in, day out, all you read here is ‘mimimimi’.

There is so much more to life than video/computer games, and certainly much more than Football Manager 26.

Then just play FM24, for example, or another genre.

Please don't get me wrong, I don't mean any harm. It's just my personal opinion. But maybe we can find a compromise.

And please remember that English is not my native language.

I had the text translated from German to English, so there may be some errors here and there.

Sorry. FM26 is absolutely fantastic. Game of the year.

We don't care what the influencer does, but it's telling.

People are hurting as FM is a huge part of their lives. You mention how toxic things are, that's why it's so important that games like FM stay good. It's a form of escape from bleak reality.

For me as a autistic person, it's a massive coping mechanism and has been for nearly 30 years. So excuse me if after two years of waiting I'm pissed that's it's turned to s**t just like everything else in the world around it. 🙂

Nothing is sacred and FM always was.

You've heard it here first folks. You cant complain about any game now. :CONF:

Thank you very much for your understanding.

It seems that there are only extremes left. Anything in between simply does not exist.

Very sad!

I do get Carles point and I do agree that frustration sometimes can quickly turn into a bit more ugly. Talk to any developer of a famous game that has disappointed fans and I am sure they can tell you stories of: death threats, sometimes shutting social media accounts to private or leaving social media completely, messages they get in LinekdIn with insults or threats against their family and more.

It does feel the discourse about games has become less about disagreements about design ideas and philosophies and has gone in a more extreme shouting and name calling culture. I mean how often do you read: these lazy devs or those idiots at company xy. Even though I am pretty sure most people wouldn't say those things to those developers if they meet them in person at a conference or when they get to know them/see how they work

Critique is important and there should be discussions why FM 26 is disappointing for long term fans, be it all the issues the game has at the moment with even old features getting worse and more. But I do think nuance is important. I actually saw a great video by a YouTuber I like that I can recommend for this:

I take your point, but as a consumer when companies are so blatantly selling out for profit (here's to you Konami) over what was previously their passion project, people get pissed off. And i'm sorry to say it but there's clear signs of it from SI.

There's a big difference between trying hard to make a great game and failing, and already having a great game and selling out for financial gain.

Football games in general have been dead for a years now for this reason. I always thought FM would be safe. People saying things will be fixed for FM27, my concern is I don't think SI really think anything needs fixing. They have their money. But I think they will have short term gain and long term pain.

I can understand your point of view @Carles P. and I agree to a large extent.

I've even said myself recently when posting criticism, that - jokingly, but not jokingly - I was stuck between "stop, it's already dead" (i.e. been trashed by all of us) and "look at the latest issue that's been discovered".

It is entirely pointless for us to keep banging the drum, day after day, pointing out why we are disappointed - angry, even. There are no SI devs here (as far as I'm aware) and it HAS crossed a line from simple criticism to pile-on.

I've known that and carried on anyway. It should stop now, especially as bug fixes are rolling out.

But in my (our) defence... Frankly, that is not enough.

This isn't simply a personal preference disagreement of the new direction a developer has taken, as it would be in other kinds of games.

It is demonstrably missing features it had in the last release, with thousands of bugs on a publicly available list and with a UI that requires many, many more clicks even for newcomers - i.e. a provably worse product.

It shouldn't have been released in this state - even those who are enjoying it are inevitably going to experience the bugs it has... and if Steam reviews are anything to go on, for every 1 player enjoying this game, there are at least 3 who are heartbroken that something that's been part of their life for many years is suddenly worse.

This was truly the one football game developer left that a lot of us trusted, to never compromise their vision and never forget the core of what they're trying to make - but they have, and what's worse, they're keeping quiet about it and pretending the tidal wave of disappointment doesn't exist.

The criticism will die down now, though. Purely because we have all tried to love the game, have given up, and have to move on now.

Thank you very much for your understanding.

It seems that there are only extremes left. Anything in between simply does not exist.

Very sad!
It's kind funny that you say that when you have extreme views in your signature. It is hard to take your point seriously when you literally do the thing you want us to stop doing in every post you make here.

On top of that. I wasn't jumping on any bandwagon or anything. I was actually telling people my experiences of the game and those experiences are widely echoed by many fans of the game, just look on Reddit or Steam and you will see it.

At last. An official response to the negativity.

Since the launch of the Advanced Access Beta and the full release of FM26, we have been closely monitoring your reports, feedback, and general commentary. With a record 2.5 million players thus far across platforms and significant player engagement during both the Beta and full release, we are incredibly grateful for your support - especially considering the challenges some players have been dealing with, which we take very seriously. The sheer volume of feedback we have received is unprecedented and truly demonstrates the passion and commitment within our growing community. Thank you for caring so deeply about the game. Addressing your concerns remains our top priority.

We fully understand the current situation - the game isn’t currently reflecting our usual polish level, and this is despite addressing a significant number of issues already, including stability improvements, fixing errors, and important polish. Below, we outline our immediate plans to address ongoing concerns and further enhance your experience.

As noted, the volume of feedback has been extraordinary - revealing a much broader set of priorities as a result. During the Beta period, this led to five different updates and ultimately came at the expense of a Day One update. We know this left some players dissatisfied. With the way the submission process works for a simultaneous release, and considering that nearly 500,000 people accessed the Beta, we simply needed to make those fixes immediately and couldn’t have kept players waiting until Day One. That decision is one of a number that has impacted our review scores, and we accept that.

Through the work that has been completed, including last week's 6 Nov update, the crash rate on PC is being brought more under control. Even though the vast majority of players haven’t experienced any crashes at all, we want to emphasise that any game-related crashes are not acceptable to us.

For those who have been affected by stability, our next update tackles many more issues, and our crash-free percentage will now improve further. On Console, the next update aims to resolve lag reported during matches and will implement a range of crash fixes to address concerns highlighted.

Despite this, we still have lots more work to do and we want to share our plans for continued updates and improvements across the FM26 cycle.

FM26 is the start of a new era for the series. Whilst it’s natural to draw comparisons with previous titles, the initial groundwork laid thus far is fundamental to enabling the series to expand and flourish beyond this cycle.

At the heart of our future vision is the UI which is undoubtedly the most prominently discussed topic. We are actively listening to all feedback and recognise that there are many adjustments that need to be made. For example, in the majority of the upcoming updates, in addition to general polish, you can expect a focus on areas that feel hidden or require too many clicks to access – which will ensure the UI performs more smoothly and continues to evolve towards its full potential.

As part of what will be regular updates for the next month*, we’ll be focusing on delivering fixes across all platforms broken down into two key areas:
  • Stability and performance
  • Quality of life and polish

Stability and performance remain at the forefront of our priorities, especially as our player base continues to expand. We’ll keep monitoring and refining this to deliver the most seamless experience possible. As outlined above, our forthcoming update will address many of the major stability concerns that have been highlighted across platforms.

Polish and quality-of-life improvements remain an ongoing focus, and you can expect consistent changes throughout the cycle, in all updates. Enhancements include both UI optimisations and addressing frequently reported actionable issues - such as the option to use the legacy spacebar functionality and allowing players to save multiple starting elevens; more of which our team are working hard to prioritise and deliver.

We’re also evaluating feedback related to broader features. While the design choices implemented in FM26 are intended to establish a foundation for future innovation, we accept that some of those choices have impacted areas of the game that are deeply valued, and so we are looking closely at that feedback as well. For example, Pass Maps are currently under consideration for an update further down the line - and we’ll keep you updated on that, and more.

Enhancing immersion remains at the heart of our goal for the series, and we remain fully committed to refining and improving FM26 throughout the cycle. Thank you again for your continued support and passion - it’s truly appreciated.

Later today (12th Nov) updates for Football Manager 26 Console and Touch will be available to download on relevant platforms. These updates focus on improving game stability and general bug fixes, along with reducing lag during matches. Full changelists will be provided following the release of the update.

We are also making progress on a new public beta track update that will be released on Steam this week (subject to the submissions process). This will introduce a legacy preference to advance through messages with the spacebar along with over 200 other fixes. We will update via FM Assist when this is complete and ready for rollout.

*Whilst weekly is our target, this is subject to clearing QA and passing submission. Cadence will vary and differ by platform, but we are doing our best to mitigate against this.

Initial feelings on that response are, 1) no "sorry", which would have gone a long way, and 2) pass maps are "under consideration" ... WHAT? How is something that's a key part of the manager's armoury - that, lest we forget, was introduced in FM22 (the period of time when code started to be ported to the FM26 project) - a "consideration"?

If you look at the guy's post history (through the source link at the top of the previous post), the number of serious issues he's replying to and confirming them as bugs which are under review...

...I made a massive mistake porting over my 2-year, 500hr save into this game. I've basically fed it into a shredder.

Some examples he's confirmed through his replies:
  • Youth intakes just don't happen in some saves (forever)
  • The AI doesn't rotate squads in youth games
  • Youth players demand crazy salaries when turning pro
  • Training changes you make revert to whatever they were previously at the start of each week
  • Sometimes player positions can't be swapped during a game (and if you DO manage it, it often counts as a substitution)

That's just the ones he's replied to. Plus, coefficients are broken and won't be fixed in the next patch, which another of the devs has admitted.

I can see that there's a "bandwagon" effect going on, but I'm also angry at the thought of the "bandwagon" being used to argue this is just "mindless SI bashing". Look, I am 100% certain getting everything ported over to Unity and working to the degree it is now, was a nightmare (it wouldn't be this bad otherwise). But if I'm paying full price for a worse product than what you gave me before... I have every right to be angry.

Guys, remember what happened with "No Man's sky".
All the negative feedback at the beginning slowly became positive and made a big title.
Have patience. Just a week passed from the official release.
As a developer I know that after a huge refactoring like that, changing the engine and also the language used to develop that thing, poses the base for something big.
Just have faith and see how it evolve. I think now patches will be more effective and there will be a lot of improvements coming in the next months.
Also, if you don't wanna spend 50 euros just play it with gamepass.

I totally disagree. This goes beyond patches. They're conscious decisions that have been made to remove multiple features that won't be returning.

Thats a VERY corporate message. Blimey.

As a developer I know that after a huge refactoring like that, changing the engine and also the language used to develop that thing, poses the base for something big.
changing an engine and/or language is not refactoring 🤓

Also, if you don't wanna spend 50 euros just play it with gamepass.
I hate this excuse that people give. Not everyone has game pass and it's not free either. Just because you pay £50 over 2/3 months, doesn't make it any less of a cost and doesn't lessen the blow that game is bad in its current state.

Guys, remember what happened with "No Man's sky".
No Mans Sky took years to improve itself and is still developed. This title is a "cycle" title, so they will never get everything people want done within it. Just like what happens with FC.

I know that the correct term is not refactoring, but I could not come with a better word :)

About gamepass, is not that you're paying the abonement for that game only, there are plenty, so it is also a way to enjoy the game for at least two months. If it get some patches that fixes some annoying bugs and UI screens then I'll continue to play it if it is satisfactory. That's at least what I'm doing.

I still hope that they get better and the switch to unity will bring us a better game.

I never knew this was a thing but I am a member of an FM group on FaceBook and it seems obvious why SI and SEGA want to target console players, as all the posts regarding this bug come from all console gamers.
