Football games are DEAD. So what are you playing and why?

Overall there is something to be said about enjoying repetition and interesting AI that joins retro PES even with games in other genres.
Here's what I play other than retro PES (WE9LE, PES2008 PS2):
  • Wreckfest: Amazing fun car crash physics and fun chaotic AI. Multiplayer is amazing as well.
  • Trackmania Nations Forever: Just has that mid 2000s vibe. It blew up on PC as a free game at the same time PES5/6 were on PS2. It's the perfect game for when you just want a quick gaming session where you improve your time over and over again.
  • Mario Tennis (N64): Just a fantastic tennis game based on momentum and physics. The AI on the harder modes is vicious. I play the Wii Virtual Console version via Dolphin Emulator (I find it runs better than emulating the N64 directly). Also a lot of fun in local 1V1 and 2V2 like PES.
  • Hot Shots Tennis Get a Grip (PSP): Superb timing based tennis game with a fantastic long RPG like career mode. The AI is super varied and interesting to play against. Doing the career and customizing your characters gives Master League vibes. I also emulate this on PC flawlessly.
  • F-Zero X and GX (N64 and Gamecube): Both amazing games with challenging AI and physics. Both run amazing on Dolphin emulator (X with the Wii Virtual Console version)

Sim Racing brings me nothing but joy these days. I just love to hop in my cockpit and slam the pedal down. 😊

Also I should start my PS2 emulator on the old Macbook again and insert one of those old Winning Eleven discs to remember the gold old days… when life was simple and footy games just fun… šŸ˜‰

Can i bump this? I know there are no new footy games but maybe is playing an old game with some new mods that elevate the experience. My issue is that i love old PES games but player AI is not that unique, CPU plays very rigid. New PES games might have this factor but the overall game sucks. FIFA - dunno im completely blind on it, i have played FIFA 17 and FIFA 14 a lot. FIFA 17 have amazing team ID, you can set up any team any way you want and they react to it. Let it be tiki taka, gegen press, country, long ball or even a mix of these, anything. Its not just a gimmick like in PES. But this as well what i heard in some FIFA games it works in some does not anymore, and more often than not the FIFA gameplay sucks.

So im lost. But feel free to leave here your footy game suggestions and more importantly why you play that specific game.

Fairly hands off gameplay, essentially scouring the forums for a glimmer of hope to the new direction of said games. Lastly I tried to play eFootball utilizing 2 classic no 10's aka Zico and Odegaard. Definitely an experiment in progress. I shall ensure that I am equipped at the back with the 'swashbuckling' type, who will try whatever possible to keep it solid and fairly impenetrable.

Still play PES 2021 on PS5 , and don't care about preset: i can recreate a player myself looking good enough on the pitch. Database, players representation (not especially preset, movement, stats, body et.) and all that matters a lot to me can be imported (kits, logos and all) and it's enough. But i'm editing a lot since 2 years more than playing, like right now lol (but it's every time i relaunch a match it's a "wow")
Also FIFA 14 as it's the most balanced version to me and i didn't really liked the PES PS3 era. And Fifa 15 and 16 i hate the movement sensations like PES 2013, too light and too quick.

Otherwise as everyone got his own regular football game, more interesting to see how can you stay alive without our yearly FG 🄲

* Retro PES and Fifa : especially all the version between PES5 and JL2008 except PES6/WE10, but i play JLWE10 europa and JLWE2007CC time to time. and i launch but rarely WE5FE and PES2014 ps2, and the only one i temper on PS3 : PES 2011. About Fifa i retried the first big turning point FIFA 08 (the game is astonishing when you try it after practically 15 years) and the Fifa 11 is my favourite old school version.

*Fighting games, recent like Tekken 7 and 8 or MK11 and MK1 reboot. I stopped to play SF since the 5 as they're mocking us with their extra expensive launch with incomplete games like for 119 euros...

*As i'm on 2 project and i love editing, but i love Tennis games too and i didn't invested myself on from the moment : only 4-5 days on TS2K25 and 2 days Tennis Elbow 4 too but i got hard with the old global engine even if the game got a real potential and a big learning curve.

*Undisputed, as i love Boxing games, but like for every game only Exhibition matches (you can start a career with a Real boxer if you want)
But the game is far more sim than Fight Night so every punch, even with guard can put you down like in reality. Very punitive i love it, you can't play like a character from a VS game or UFC which is a semi-simulation. Footwork, avoiding, keeping the distance etc., avoiding punch is the first imperative step to learn the basics.
I think it will be the first game i will invest myself on it when i'll be done with my edits : i got a big CRUSH for that one the day i launched it for the first time, even more than a Fight Night.

* I own tons of Souls likes and games but not the completely copied-pasted like Lies of P / Bloodborne. I stopped to buy them as i got a pile to start and finish, but i'm not the type of gamers who wants to play with the super latest technology. I will launch them one by one when my edit will be more advanced. Got a lot of remakes or sequel from old games (Resident evil 3 : it's superb graphically, G'n'G resurrection hard as hell, Monster Boy etc.)

* Of course Tennis games, but when i launch it, especially TS2k25 i can't stop. I love the overall sensations. Got Tennis Elbow 4 but even if there's perhaps more outcomes, i'd like TS2k25 better (but that one got many bad critics, probably due to the roster, no Tournament mode and Kournikova cheated)

* And finally all related to retrogaming, from 16 to 32 bits with my PS2 exception as i love to try the news improvement hacks transforming for example in Megadrive Street Fighter II' (16mb) in a mostly arcade perfect game, using 32 mb and a thing i wanted to talk on the Retrogaming thread : you can add CD musics and even improve games with the support of CD. It's working for MD and Snes and you can devine more or less what a Snes CD would have supported. For the moment there's only Killer instinct using the CD memory to add missing animations, but it's a debut (i will post the comparison tomorrow on the dedicated thread)
Also i own buy every PS5 and PC and remake/remaster i didn't got the chance to play it on PS2-PsP-PS3 like Ridge Racer 2.

So, yes, i would like to have a new football game balanced as we can't play the same games for the rest of your live like Fifa/PES 17 and PES 2021 etc. and even all PS2 games (even if those one seems more like an fighting game like SFII, simple, but you want to play one more game everytime.

And i would buy a full cockpit like an arcade game @PRO_TOO , but with a basic controller i prefers assisted/arcade racing games as long as there's goods speed sensations. Big Wipeout remake fan and all Ridge Racer. But i own GT4 and love it... But too hard for me without a wheel/pedals combo and i don't have place for it :(

Question on competitive multiplayer fighting games: How beneficial is it to get the "first hit" and does it affect your strategy over following rounds? I'm trying to see if it's Meta to set up strategy based upon landing first. Or is it down somewhat to RNG to preserve some fairness.
