FIFA World Cup 2026 - Discussion Thread

Yeah my VAR rant thread doesn't look so silly now, does it? DOES IT??????

What the officials did with Argentina vs Egypt match- singlehandedly ruined all the motivation to watch the World cup any further. It was disgusting and straight up obvious. They didn't even attempt on hiding the bs.

Problem still isn't Var, it's just how people using it.
The only difference between the two was one was a free kick and one was a penalty.
The VAR guys didn't want to intervene in a winning goal being scored and bringing it back for a penalty at the other end.

As already stated above.
VAR isn't the problem it is the inconsistencies and the people who are using it.
It is meant to be used only for clear and obvious errors.

England v Mexico game:
VAR should of intervened for the sending off as it was a clear and obvious error by the ref to let play continue.
The penalty against Kane though wasn't clear and obvious error IMO and therefore shouldn't of been given.

Egypt v Argentina:
Egypt's disallowed goal shouldn't of been disallowed as the foul was incredibly soft and shouldn't of been deemed as an error.
Egypt penalty - This is where you just ask for consistency IMO not a clear and obvious error - However with the free kick being given for the Egypt goal then it should of 100% been a penalty for Egypt and the Argentina goal disallowed.

The main gripe though is the standard of refereeing is a shambles these days, they don't seem to have a clue what to do.
Do they just let everything go, knowing VAR will give the correct decision or ref the game as normal.
Either way every ref these days looks a shambles and shouldn't even be refereeing at Sunday League level, let alone at a WC.

We need to bring back that dude from PES 2004 cover art as ref. Would have eaten all these players alive.

Look at this farce.
They call in VAR going back three hundred meters to disallow the goal. The reason was contact.

But with the score tied at 2-2 late in the game, that exact type of contact occurred involving Salah which should have been a penalty for Egypt. VAR didn't intervene. Argentina capitalized on the situation and turned the match around.

Honestly, this favoritism is disgusting. It doesn't matter which country it is... What is the point of VAR? To be convenient whenever they want to benefit or disadvantage someone? Is it a mafia operating with other interests?
In football, it is a characteristic of Argentines to be arrogant, violent, and extremely unscrupulous.

When Argentina was leading 3-2, Lautaro Martínez started doing step-overs, trying to humiliate the opponent. That’s just how they are. When they’re ahead even if it’s a robbery they show no respect. I'm going to root for them to get eliminated!

I highly agree on this, both plays should've been checked, but besides that, after the first goal Argentina did a very great recovery they owned the game the issue with Egypt was they thought the match was already finished and decided to play 9 for the defensive and 2 for attack.
As for how Lautaro decided to earn some time thats up to each player, we already see that many times before, that's just something silly to rant about

Never wanted VAR from the moment they were even talking about it. It was supposed to only be used for goal line decisions initially. I knew they wouldn't stop there. Now it's basically a part of football, it's likely they are probably going to even further expand it's use. Can't see them ever getting rid of it now it's firmly in place.

With the World Cup now heading to the last 8, unless miracles happening, it's pretty much settled for the top teams to win the World Cup, namely France, Spain, England, and Argentina. Morocco and Norway are still possible to win it as they have been pretty good. Why bother playing the bloody tournament??? Let's just move on to the qualifiers for the upcoming 2030 World Cup. At least the overrated countries like Portugal, the Netherlands, and Belgium are again involved then.

No seriously, one of the most attractive things is the fact the football is not predictable. In most other sports the best team or individual wins, in football that is often not the case. Remember Greece's Euro 2004 and Leicester City's Premier League triumph in 2016.

And now to contradict myself, all we have to know is against which team Argentina will win the final. Argentina is pretty much garbage team in this World Cup, but they will go to the final and like usually their most influential players will be just Messi, the FIFA referees, and VAR.

Remember:

Argentina's whole 1978 World Cup (Particularly the game vs Peru)
Argentina - England (1986 World Cup - Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" goal)
Germany - Argentina (1990 World Cup Final - Probably the worst World Cup Finals in history with 2 Argentinians getting sent off during that game and the winning penalty by Brehme that wasn't legit)
Argentina - Mexico (2010 World Cup - Carlos Tevez scoring a goal while he was at offside position)
Argentina - Iran (2014 World Cup - The penalty that was never given by Iran)
Germany - Argentina (2014 World Cup Final - Gonzalo Higuain scoring a legit goal that was disallowed and no penalty for Argentina related to Manuel Neuer's challenge with Higuain)
Netherlands - Argentina (2022 World Cup - Battle of Lusail; the game with lots of yellows and brawls)

And these during this year's World Cup (along with that Egypt's game):

Argentina - Algeria: No red card for Lionel Messi after reckless tackle against Algerian player (same Balogun treatment)
Argentina - Austria: Messi scoring a 2nd goal while MacAllister committed a foul against Austrian player in the lead-up of goal at the same time

These are only a few examples I still remember...

Speaking of Leister City, I hate how FIFA banned beautiful mow pattern designs. Now matches have to have these stupid boring stripes because linesmen can detect offside better?! There's VAR and other stupid tech out there, why do they even need mow patterns? I want the circles, diagonals back!

The biggest upset isn't the VAR decision for me, its the revoking of the red card, the treatment of Iran and how Ronaldo got his red card in the last world Cup, and shouldnt have played in the two first games this WC
The US should never have got this WC and infantino has made the game we love a fucking joke

Bring back step bladder. Nostalgia from 2014 world cup game, that old dude used to give world cup trophy on the final cutscene after you win world cup final.

Not a good tournament by Hakimi, for Diaz I think he's that kind of player who doesn't believe he have weaknesses and doesn't care.

Morocco got cooked. The match was very boring and the time wasting by VAR during the penalty was awful. I was rooting for Morocco but France really deserved to win this match. Their performance have been top notch for years now and they are one of the few teams in this WC who's performance has been consistently great.

This.
And don't forget the referee from Somalia, who wasn't allowed to enter even though he had a valid visa. With all the crap going on right now, it's easy to forget certain things.

Yes, forgot about him buddy
Plus, the VAR situation was used exactly how it was intended to, thats why people wanted VAR, millimeter justice.
I dont see how people can be upset over it.
I hate VAR, we dont have it here in Sweden since we're a 51% league/country and we've said no.

What upsets people is who gets punished over a decision and how inconsistent it's being used i think

So as none's gonna say it, the penalty gave to France was not a penalty... Mbappe just dive itself and wasn't even touch
It didn't make controversy because Bounou saved it in the end. There was also a handball before Mbappe's goal but overall France was way better than Morocco and it was a matter of time before they scored.
Hakimi and Diaz were supposed to be our best players but they underperformed.

Felt bad for Morocco and Belgium. At least, not a bad World Cup campaign for them.

Especially Belgium after a boring group stage performance, that comeback win vs Senegal, and dominant display vs co-hosts USA. A good recovery from that disastrous Qatar 2022, they somehow put such a good fight against Spain in the quarterfinal and even ending Spain's clean sheet run.

As for France vs Morocco game, that weird situation before Mbappe's penalty miss really surprised me, and there was a handball in the lead-up of Mbappe's goal. But overall, Morocco was quite bad that day after an early dominance in this tournament, including the games vs Brazil and the Netherlands. The Round of 16 game vs Canada was also below par performance for Morocco despite of that big win, especially the 1st half display; Canada could have scored at least 1 goal if they had clinical finishing on their front iirc.

France vs Spain semifinal is nice. I hope "Dictator" Mbappe finally gets a revenge for that Euro 2024 semifinal loss.

Regarding the remaining two semifinals, it's still a tough matchup. Norway vs England is all about Haaland vs Kane when it comes to Golden Boot race. I don't know who will go through, but England shouldn't be worried about Norway. Still, Haaland is a big threat, but Norway's defense is also shaky. I expect another drama just like Mexico vs England game.

Argentina will obviously go through if Messi's "black magic" continues. Won't be surprised if FIFA and VAR did their own jobs just like the Egypt game. I believe with 2-1 on the scoreboard.

Contact isn't a foul. You should never use still images as a benchmark. Mbappé seeks contact on purpose—you could see that very clearly in the video. Just like every striker does these days. Way too many soft penalties are being called.

So when it's about a offside, using a still frame is wrong ?
To me even worse than a single frame is using slow motion. Seriously, EVERYTHING in slow motion looks like a foul / penalty... Ridiculous.

About offside... I think they should really only consider the player's torso for flagging offside calls. I can't remember now which team in the group stage had a goal disallowed because of a TOE. Colombia maybe? Anyways, it's utterly pathetic.

we can't keep readjusting offside every time it's inconvenient. The current rule of any part off the body which you can score a goal can't be in an offside position is the most logical way.
