FIFA World Cup 2026 - Discussion Thread

Just to be clear, this is only an option on a pay-TV channel in Germany. Of course, you can also watch the games the “regular” way.

The World Championship feels like modern-day PC and video games.

Over-commercialised
Daily challenges (one game every day)
Pay-to-win
Tiresome

I propose a new rule; if you're fouled, but then kick the floor with both feet to make yourself fall over and scream, the foul is cancelled out.

Otherwise, this diving epidemic is going to continue ruining the game. Absolutely horrendous dive there by Nmecha for Germany just before half time - and against Curacao (not Brazil, not Spain, Curacao), who they were already beating.

Shameful, and all I see from journalists is "clear penalty". That may be true, but it's followed by "clear cheating", and nobody talks about that any more.

Anyone see the Netherlands' kit color too much saturated on his screen?
Yeah, they're a blur for us on ITV. But we don't get a 4K option (only 1080p) if ITV show the game (rather than BBC) - other parts of the world that can get a 4K version may be okay.

Actually Im watching the game on BeInsports, and even during the friendly game vs Algeria two weeks ago I noticed that the color is saturated on TV

Japan Netherlands probably a fair result. Japan are no mugs that's for sure.

Against what I thought would be the case, I'm actually enjoying this world cup so far. There have been some good games so far, the time wasting is really being kept in check (please let this happen in the league next season!) and I'd love to know if there are any stats on ball in play time so far to compare.

Some thoughts so far (I reserve the right to change them )

It would be nice if we could kick off at the correct time.

I get the hydration breaks but in stadiums with a closed roof and 22c degrees?

If Ecuador had some composure in front of goal they'd have had about four last night.

If someone can tell Japan to play like that before going behind they could spring a real surprise.

Curacao equalising against Germany was one of the best world cup underdog moments. I also loved the fact they kept having a go all game no matter how far behind. It didn't get to 4-1 and then camp in their box to keep the score down.

Brazil will not win it.

Germany will not win it.

The thing is with the hydration breaks, even if it's not a hot day other teams will argue that their team is at a disadvantage because it's basically a 3 minute rest period that their Nation won't be getting. So I think it has to be consistent for every match no matter the temperature. So either have them every game or don't have them every game I think.

There's been some good matches so far. I know everyone seems to be a negative Nancy about this world cup, ticket prices, rules etc but the football has been enjoyable with a lot of goals.

Didn't bother waking up at 4am to see my shitty team (Sweden) have yet another stinker, been like that for a few years.
Enter 5-1...
Wtf?
We're probably through already even if we lose the next two games.
Weird.
If Isak was fully fit, I could have been worse for Tunisia.

It's done like that so TV broadcasters can squeeze in some commercials also mid-half should they decide to, as simple as that.

No doubt. Strangely though we have two free channels sharing coverage and the one with adverts (ITV) isn't showing adverts in the hydration break despite me expecting them to.

Yeah I guess that's fair enough re the breaks. They have effectively become timeouts.

Hah I expected them to insert more ads too on drink breaks. Thankfully they didn't!

BBC are showing the games in UHD on iPlayer but the problem with iPlayer is the games are 30 seconds to a minute behind what is going on.

It is 2026 and in the UK we can't get a full UHD channel for football.

What a heroic, historic point for Cape Verde! They defended like warriors this afternoon and the 40-year old goalkeeper Vozinha played the game of his career

Doku is that player that have high Agility and Dribble speed but average Dribble Accuracy and low Shoot Acc and Technique

Egypt played their best game ever in the WC tournament. Belgium didn't replicate their game vs Tunisia.

I was surprised to see Salah being substituted, despite he didn't play as a winger but a second striker with Marmoush so his defensive role is less

It could have been a few more for sure
Saw that the Tunisian coach got sacked after the game.

Not sure why he got sacked. I mean, you've got Gyokeres and Isak what were Tunisia expecting? Lol

And for me, Ayari from a Brighton was the top man in that game.
Really a wild story with the coach getting stacked and his son immediately got in to a fight with people after the sacking

They looked impressive overall. Granted Tunisia aren't the strongest team but neither are Cape Verde ... I'm looking at you Spain 😂
So yeah you might end up slaying some big teams along the way.

The son representing his dad 💯

Ha ha exactl, standing up for Daddy
We got two pretty tough teams in The Netherlands and Japan next, so who knows
Could be a weird WC no one has really impressed yet
Still both England and Argentina yet to enter

Yeah I was thinking how difficult that group was. Id guess you will be in the the top two and Japan maybe qualify through third place (however FIFA work that out) Having said that, Japan look like they might cause a few upsets and qualify directly.
We're playing tomorrow against Croatia which will be our toughest match in our group but on paper we should be topping the group comfortably. There's a lot of evenly matched teams, especially European teams so as far as the Knockouts go I don't think anyone is a shoe in to win it.
