FC Barcelona Thread

That`s why we say the legends of the past were legend and the legends of today are legend.

I`m sure leg breaking tackles were just tackles ,where today it`s different. So, tomorrow`s football will have replays and such. I just enjoy the moment and appreciate the past.

I agree. It's definitely impossible to adequately compare players.
I'm 26 so I haven't REALLY seen Pele, Maradona play and to be honest as much as I am a Messi-appreciator and against Pele's arrogance, I tend to consider the latter "the genious of the game".

I thijnk it can't be overstated how many arguments go both ways of football in the earlier days being easier/harder.

I'm uncomfortble listening to people mention Messi as "the greatest". Yet aside from that we SHOULD be in awe of him. Lighter boots and all, he is the only one in recent history [20-years] who can pull numbers like he was playing 40+ years ago. The game is, in a way, harder now because there's a huge number of data on everything done by any player.

To be a good coach today means to prepare your defenders. Every defender Messi goes against KNOWS percentages of times he cuts in or goes wide, where he shoots a penaly - data which was way harder to get 50 years back. I'm pretty sure they've seen slow motion clips of his dribbling so as to be able to recognize his moves in advance... so it's up to him to either a) try new moves/variations or b) execute that which he can do better. And he does it.

A friend complained that Messi isn't challenged enough, defenders aren't going in for the tackle enough. Well sure... they'd rather stay close to him, prepared; experience taught them - cause they only get one chance and he's REALLY GOOD at close-range dribbling. Remember Zaragoza from a few years back?
The silly thing is that with all this waiting around Messi he usually gets a shot.

MESSSII WINS IT 4TH TIME IN A ROW!!! GODLIKE FOOTBALLER!! Hail the king of all time! One title to rule them all, I hope he can pull it off in WC2014!!!

Can't argue too much with this as his goal tally is amazing, but I would've honestly given it to Ronaldo. Winning the league and having a good Euro's for me should've got the award.

You can like it or not to have individual prizes in a team sport. But if you are talking about individual prizes, then there's practically nothing that Cristiano does better, and he's a very limited player compared to Messi.

It's not only about the goals, I say it again. Messi is playing almost as an AMC, sometimes even as a CM and is extending his influence to all ares of the pitch. You have to watch him play to understand his control of the opponents. Contrary to Ronaldo, highlights show only a part of Messi's talent. But anyway:

Watch the 28 assists he did last season (one of the best assisters in the world, in fact):
YouTube - Lionel Messi - All 28 Assists 2011/2012 | By FCBHD19

Some of the assists would make it into the career highlights of players like Pele (who never was a good passer actually), Zidane or Maradona. And its just one season! Most of the great plays come against teams like Real Madrid. Messi does it almost every week. Assisting, dribbling, passing and moving the whole attack. In some plays he dribbles up to 4 players and then deliver a killer pass. Show me any other player in the world able to do this.

But wait.

Then you can then watch the 91 goals he scored in a natural year:
YouTube - Lionel Messi â— All 91 Goals in 2012 â— New World Record

Take the goal he scores to Sevilla, for example. He nutmegs a defender and then does a lob shot to the upper corner of the goal. All that in a split second. The thing is he does it look so simple that people end up believing it is simple to do! Not to mention all the records he broke.

Ronaldo is an inmense player, but it's far from delivering even half of the things Messi does in those videos. The only thing Ronaldo does better is heading, but Messi does everything else better (passing, long passing, free kicks, tactical positioning, assisting, dribbling, ball control, vision...). And he even does that without moaning, diving, feigning, shouting, crying and keeping as humble as a boy playing in the street.

I simply laugh when someone says Ronaldo is more "complete" as a player just because is taller and stronger. We're talking about football. But to be scientific, let's get it down to statistics. All statistics show Messi is way better than Ronaldo, by a large margin, in all departments (except headers). And Ronaldo is by far the best footballer in the world after Messi.

So, if Messi don't get injured he will deservedly accumulate about 7 or 8 Golden Balls. I would be surprised if that isn't the case.

Completely agree with drekkard, the award of the best player should go to the best player and that is Messi.

And now something paradoxical: as long as Ronaldo stays and individualist and not a team player, he will never be the best player in the world individually because in football the team is important and not the individual player...i hope i made myself a litle bit clear because this must sound quite odd...

I think all these Ballon D'Or awards and Fifa Team of the year things need to be taken with a big pinch of salt. It comes down to votes from managers, national team captains and assorted members of the media so it is hardly scientific and if you look at some of the voting it's political in it's element.

It's very hard to treat that defence in the team of the year with much credibility. Marcelo, Pique, Ramos and Daniel Alves? That's a backline that seems to have been picked to excell at everything except defending. It's also one without a real organiser at set pieces. Chiellini and Hummels would easily make that back line stronger, and Lahm would probably be a better bet down the flank.

Players with big profiles tend to dominate these teams. Alves and Pique arguably had their worst seasons for Barca and are in the XI, while Ramos and Marcelo haven't been outstanding to the levels of alternatives like Hummels, Kompany, Alba etc.

Definitely Pique (though he was inmense in the Euro), Marcelo (Lahm, Bale and Alba were much better) and Alves (ironically, this was his worse season ever) shouldn't be on that list under any circumstance. And Pirlo should be instead of Xabi Alonso, Cech Neuer or Buffon instead of Casillas and Falcao and Van Persie could perfectly share the last spot.

I couldn't resist it. To put Messi ni perspective, here's a compilation of interesting plays he has done (some goals, but mostly incredible plays, passes and dribblings)... only in the last 4 MONTHS!!!

YouTube - Lionel Messi â— Skills 2012-2013 ||HD||

Some of the plays are incredible, that's the kind of things no one had done before week in week out. He's been doingthis for 5 years now. Amazing. Legend. As big as Jordan, and maybe bigger.

The show itself was bad. The Brazil's wc presentation was weak. The goal of the year "REALLY!!" To have the US Swedish -American NT coach sing a country song was shocking and borderline discussing. Messi should know better being short n wearing pokadoted suit (bad taste). Look like you find in an angler's box.
I say leave the Grammies for Hollywood . That's my opinion really... The award goes to Messi hands down. The Team XI is just from last season. No complaints really la liga are on the up!

I agree that Leo's tuxedo was a big mistake...my daughter immediately crucified him for it...You should see the Drogba poster she got on her bedroom wall.... Didier in a classy suit and pants and nothing more...you can see all his muscles....girls from 13 have their own fantasies....

My daughter is 13 , a massive fan of a group called one direct. I don`t allow posters in my house unless its Arsenal !! I don`t run a democracy household

Ilker is the best dress !

oh my bad, i thought you were talking about when usa won the wc. I just watched the clip, ehh not that bad, i mean for me she was just letting out an emotion via singing. As for the outfit, yeah not the best. Ronaldo looked like the Portuguese 007. Xavi and messi looked like duechebags at the club

Good Euro? Lol? Good game against Holland that was dead, thats all.

I was going to touch on that :)

I've spent these past few days on various sites and they've only strengthened my opinion, that Ronaldo had a normal/mediocre Euro and everything else is mythical. Various sites such as the Guardian mention a good appearance of his in 2 games, out of five played by POR. The Netherlands one and maybe the Czech one, where he was "decisive" rather than sparkling.

I think Portugal fans might actually be disappointed in him. For maybe not taking the first Spain penalty and badly managing one good scoring occasion in the same match. One that would probably have been decisive, seeing it was close to the 90th/120th minute [can't remember].

Moreso, the autumn season was very poor from Portugal and they have to come back if they want to even get to the play-offs of the World Cup. Coupling this with a really unimpressive Madrid fall, he doesn't look much of a Ballon contender.

Messi and his ugly polka dot suit cracked me up big time! :D

Looks like when it comes to matters off the field, he's not the best decision-maker! :P

Actually he took all free kicks as far as I remember (they all obviously hit asteroids like Ramos or hit the wall).
The moment you are talking about was on extra time, when he was almost 1 on 1 and blew it..
That was actually a moment to bury Messi in Ballon d'or competition and Spain reigning champions.. he blew it...

Same goes for his mesmerizing perfomance against Greece in Final of Euro 2004,

Total shots - 16, Shots on target - 5, I think I know who missed most of them :)

David Villa 1st half was amazing! 1st goal immense and 2nd was class. How come there`s rumors of him going away?! He hasn`t lost anything imo . Rumors is he might leave at the end of the season. He offers too much to be on the bench.

I don't think he'll leave Bebo, he's an important part of their squad IMO. He's sort of squad player now but if Messi was to get injured he'd come in and continue to score goals, I don't think theirs many others in their squad who can so he's still very important.

If he 's only a squad player, he should go to another club. As much as i love Barcelona, David Villa is one the best player's in the world and should always play.

In a way this is perhaps the ultimate tribute to Leo Messi: the players who didn't play (or had to go away) because he plays where he plays and how he plays: Eto'o, Ibrahimovic and Villa...
