E3 2009 - The Official Thread

Sony has announced that SingStar: Motown will head to PS3 and PS2 this year, packing songs from legends like Marvin Gaye, The Supremes and Stevie Wonder.

There's little else to go on for now, and we presume a tracklist will be forthcoming. But otherwise this is much the same deal as SingStar Queen and SingStar ABBA.

Sony also promises brand new online community features for SingStar PS3 this September. These will be a video editor that has an "array of special effects" to spruce up home movies, and SingStar Clubs - a tool allowing like-mined members of SingStar Online to group together and share stuff.

I just realised that instead of announcing Final Fantasy XIV as an exclusive they should have said Final Fantasy VII remake in 2010 exclusive to PS3! Also where was Heavy Rain and London/Liverpool/Cambridge studio games? They must be onto something big.

Microsoft's conference was slightly better than Sony's IMO, ultimately I really don't want a "Sony is better than MS" bullshit argument. Which by the way is the undertone to 95% of posts in this thread!!

It seemed to me that GT5 was trumped by Forza 3, there is no way GT5 will have the community features that Forza will have. As beautiful as GT5 is, it still felt very sterile and lifeless, fingers crossed that will improve.

Uncharted 2 looks fantastic, loved the first game so the second is going to be great. GoW3 looks pretty good but hasn't really (from what we have seen) moved things on. I don't give a rats about Final Fantasy (goes for either platform). The motion controller was great from a responsiveness perspective, but, like Natal - hugely gimmicky. Wait and see for both of these.

I liked Sony's more just because they showed games I've been hyped for for a while now and teased some decent new stuff.

I'm not impressed with facebook and other apps on the 360 as I have them and tons more already on the ps3 so it's hardly a reason to jump ship. Sky on 360 I'm not bothered by as I have virgin media.

Alan Wake looked good, the atmosphere looked great. But it fell on it's face for me when they showed that the torch burns the bad guys and then you shoot them - it was really difficult to see where you were aiming while the torch burned and light sprayed off everywhere blocking your view. Not a big failing but it was just something I disliked about it in the same way Resi 5 was an good game to play but the inability to walk and aim/shoot really annoyed me.




Forza looked head and shoulders above Gran Turismo for community features but then Gran Turismo has the WRC license and Nascar and though I missed it LeMans as well it seems which should be astounding. :BRMM: If they use the psp GT share feature on GT5 they could get a decent community going. I was part of the Forza 2 community sharing cars with designs on and auctioning them off. 90% of the cars other people were selling were manga anime styles full of cartoon girls with huge boobs. They looked impressive as they were made with the in game tools but do I want to drive a car around a track with a cartoon 14 year old school girl with big boobs painted on my car?

I wasn't too keen on the arcadey style Forza displayed on it's trailer. Mainly where the cars are racing and one spins round so it's going backwards at the same speed as the others then it spins round again. It seemed like it was more about spinning around and ride racer style moves than about racing.


Final Fantasy 7, 13 and maybe 14 is something I'd pick 1 system over another for. 7 being one of if not my all time favourite game. I'm hyped for FF13 after seeing what a friend with the demo thinks of it. I'll probably pass on FF14 as it had the tagline 'online'. So I'm guessing a MMO with a monthy fee like the last FF online.

This Wii Remote rip off. Watching the Nintendo conference before the sony one made me remember how much fun the Wii was. I started to want a Wii again after seeing Wii Resort and the 2D mario. So now we get the graphics and features of the PS3 (I'm thinking the free online play mainly) with the gameplay of the Wii.

Natal sounds mind blowing on paper but it seems the more you look at it the more cracks you can see. It will have impressed the mindless drones who aren't into games but saw/heard it on the news. The kinds of people who buy a Wii because they heard everyone else was buying one. They played the clip on the radio yesterday and then after the DJ and news girl were saying how amazing it was that you could talk to the boy and he'd understand everything you said and speak back and then how you can actually catch the goggles and draw things for him and he will take them off you and use them.

Which will be EXACTLY what Peter M wanted. As usual he slyly hints at features and then says more and more and leaves everyone who took it at face value stunned and then goes backstage in private to say to a select group of people how it's all a trick and how this doesn't work and this doesn't and that was staged and this well let's ignore that.

Uncharted 2 looked great - the way the bushes and surroundings moved when the chopper came low was great and the first one was so much fun I played it start to finish about 5 times. Then we have the multiplayer co op and competitive side too.

M A G - We need more more more!

God of War 3 - hopefully it will be as epic as the first with some great boss battles.

Agent - Very annoying they didn't explain ANYTHING about this game but Rockstar do have a history of announcing their next games then showing nothing for a long time. Maybe sony chose to announce it at E3 with no game to show because they knew Rockstar's reputation is enough. In the same way 360 fans sit up and pay attention if they hear Bungie are working on something for the 360 or if Miyamoto is doing a new game for the Wii.

Modnation Racers looks great fun as well.
 
In the cold light of day, think overall, both major players had a really good E3 and most importantly, looks like we are getting great features and games in the next 12-24 months - which at the end of the day is what its all about.

There was plenty of stuff in both that will appeal to most people - I was a bit dissapointed in all the CGI trailers from Sony and as good as the Natal stuff was/could be, they clearly (and cleverly) showed it in a misleading way - like you say Rad to get loads of hype from the casual onlookers.

If I'm honest, the PS3 version would be better for gamers as it has most of the freedom, but with the extra controller I said should be used for Natal. I can see Natal only being used in casual Wii-style games and the PS3 version being used in much more variety of dedicated games.

So overall, I'm pretty pumped for what we saw over the last few days. Forza, GT5 and ModNation Racers stood out for me, though UC2 and MAG look great and I'm loving the upgrades to the 360 OS.

Thanks everyone. But it aint over just yet. We still have another day of information and then we have GamesCom in August and Tokyo Games Show in September. :)

It was on the brief montage video but I don't think they had the time to show anything else. They had to push the PS2 and promise not to abandon it as it's still selling shit loads. Then they pushed the new PSP in an almost relaunch of the product with some big name games. That left less than a hour to put in all of the big name games and what would you have removed from what they showed?
