Dead Island

IGN have given this a good review, 8 out of 10. They said it's a lot like Fallout 3, basically an RPG which sounds fun to me. Plus, you have the option for up to three friends to join your single player online and dip in and out of eachother's games. Now that sounds like fun.
 
Not sure about this, just think it looks too much like a splatter-fest.

I presume a bit of a story and not as much in your face stuff.

Well it seems to have the best of both worlds from what I've seen. Plenty of exploring, splattering zombies, lots of different kinds of missions, RPG style character building, Dead Rising style weapon combining which also looks fun.

I'm sure it'll have lots of small flaws but as a game to play the campaign with online with a mate or two, it looks like great fun.
 
So apparently the devs uploaded a buggy developer build to Steam instead of the retail version, all those lucky Americans who bought the game on Steam and got to unlock it yesterday find that it's buggy, unfinished, full of xbox 360 configs/dialogues and has built in cheats (example pressing y activates no-clip), good PR for techland...
 
Blimey what a gaffe. How did they manage to do that? I presume all those who bought and downloaded it can just download the real, finished version, but that's well shit nonetheless!
 
They're investigating, presumably the disk version will be fine, someone just uploaded the wrong copy to steam from their folder! Guess everyone who got it will need to download the whole thing ago, all being well it'll be fixed for the Friday EU launch.
 
They do seem to be making a lot of cock ups lately. I bet whoever uploaded the wrong version was shitting themselves when they realised!

I just caught Romero's Land of the Dead on TV last night, it's put me well in the mood to play this now. Might break out Left 4 Dead 2 until Friday!
 
I've got it and I think it's quite good. I didn't have high expectations but I've played it for about an hour and the gameplay seems solid and there's a lot to do. The problem with the buggy steam release was fixed with a patch within a few hours.
 
I didn't realise it was first person, thought it was gonna be more like Dead Rising.

From the GameTrailers review it looks really clumsy and dated which is a bit of a shame. I don't like the L4D games and the gameplay reminded me of that.
 
The only two gaming sources which i actually consistently trust gave this game an average of 4/10. That's any small amount of interest i had gone.

Metacritic user scores aren't good either.

What are the websites you trust?

Im still in 2 minds about this game lol, seems a bit weird seeing such drastic differences in reviews.
 
It's not helped by the very poorly handled launch but user comments from people who can overlook those problems are generally favourable, if you like RPG/open world games and like zombies then it seems to be a very good game.
 
Not a bad game. At first I hated to fight but since I changed the controls to the analog attack system, it's much better.
I love exploring too.

Edge and Metro Game Central. I usually end up agreeing with Edge on whether a game seems worth playing or not and Metro Game Central on the actual score of the game. Funnily enough Edge gave the game a 3/10. Edge is incredibly critical at times and i know a lot of people don't like them. A 3 from them is more like a 5 from anywhere else but there's some rage going down on the comments section though because they gave the game a 3, it's quite funny. On the flip side though i like Edge because if they award a 7 they mean it as a good-decent score where as it's just an average score from most other gaming circles. If in doubt i tend to listen to what 1UP has to say too. They gave the game 67.

There does seem to be quite a difference in review scores across the board. I don't always listen to reviewers, as i seem to imply, but at times when review scores are so divided i find myself having to look at the opinions of the sources that i tend to agree with.

I loaded my game up today and found that the 2 hours I played last night hadn't been saved despite the save logo flashing countless times!

Found a solution until they patch it though.
Set your game to "single player" and not online.. Or better still play while offline.
 
Edge Magazine talks out of it's ass IMO. Too trumped up for their own good. Plus I don't trust their scoring anyways. I seem to recall plenty of occasions where they seem to lower game scores just to be controversial.

I'll get this when the price comes down, like I said before it'll be flawed but fun. I have no problem with flawed games if they're still a laugh to play and are cheap.
 
I don't know about doing it for the sake of being controversial. Seems to me it's the opposite. They don't place as much importance of getting hits on their website really because they make more money from selling their actual magazine, same as Metro being a newspaper, where as most websites want people to visit them because they only function as a website so they don't want to rile anybody up because they won't trust their reviews. In fact Edge don't even put all their reviews on their website. I don't think it's any coincidence that these two sources are more critical about games than most other website only sources seem to be. That's just my opinion of course.

I'm not trying to stick up for edge as i think they have their flaws too, indeed they are trumped up at times, but i definitely think that they tend not to overlook things in the same way a hell of a lot of other reviewers do. I'd rather have a reviewer be more critical than overly positive of a product.

Also i doubt Dead Island is really a 3/10 but it's enough to suggest it's probably not a game that's worth paying £40 for.

Picked this up today, had a few hours on it and really enjoyed it. Thought it was worth a punt and it turned out my luck was in. I love exploration and the scenery, locations in this are great. Typically crap voiceovers and lip-sync but it doesn't take away from the fact I've had more fun with this in 3 hours than I've had with my last two game playthroughs combined (FEAR 3 and Resi 5).

I like how the parents in the family from the original epilogue / trailer can be found in the game, nice little touch.

They certainly like to think they're top journalists, and maybe they are, but some of their scores are downright odd. That though is totally subjective so thinking about it, no-one is right or wrong in that sense.

I was baffled how they could give FIFA11 9/10 and yet give PES2011 either a 6 or 7/10, Killzone 3 only 7/10, or Dead Island 3/10 yet give MW2 an 8. Again, all subjective, but given they try to review games in a way that purports to be almost 'higher brow', they still reward some of the biggest yet crappiest games when they come out.

Back on topic I don't think this game will be worth £40, I'll happily pay a cheaper price when it comes down, or second hand on Amazon. Game prices seem to plummet online these days just weeks after they come out.

I pretty much agree with what you say. Plus i'm really not likely to trust any gaming journalist about a sports game. To a gamer who doesn't specialise in football then Fifa is the game of choice because it flows so well. Games like MW2 and Fifa come in and their flow is so obvious that you don't get too much of an understanding about the game until you've spent a long time with it, i'm not sure how long reviewers spend with games so i can see why flow of a game would be something that could mean they overlook things because of. MW2 didn't have that bad a campaign but it was a 7 at best, online sucked though but even i took a while to realise that after being so keen on the game after MW1.
