Hi everyone,
Old football games had a certain feel: the weight of a pass, the timing of a tackle. I'm trying to bring that feel back in a new game, and I need people who know it to tell me if I'm close.
Here is a 50-second look at the game:

What you can do in it so far
  • Play 11 v 11 with classic default buttons (you can change them), on a DualSense or a keyboard, alone or with a friend on the same machine.
  • Fouls, offside, cards, extra time and penalty shoot-outs.
  • Close dribbling, skill moves, headers, a tackle assist, a power gauge for shots, and penalty aiming.
  • AI levels, training, a league mode, a team editor, and goal replays from several cameras.
Developed on Unity. Compiled for macOS 26, tested on M2 chip.
The game is developed with AI, based on the source code of Gameplay Football by Bastiaan Konings Schuiling (public domain).
What I'd like to hear from you
  1. Which part of a match should feel right first: passing, shooting or defending?
  2. What did the classic football games do that new ones do not?

I'm working on gameplayfootball as well, I think the problem is that it needs the animation engine to be totally reworked. It is a very good game, a work of art, but in 2026 that game needs really new animations.

v0.2 is out: free download now, and the game is yours to customise.

Thanks to everyone who looked at the first version. v0.2 is free to download for Apple Silicon Macs (M1 or later): https://costa-lab.itch.io/costarsoccer

What's new

  • PES 2018 patch import. Home > Customise > Import a pack, pick your patch folder and a league. Leagues, teams, kits, crests, player data (abilities, positions, skills), boots and gloves come in, plus balls, menu backgrounds and music. I tested it with SmokePatch 18.4.0. Each import becomes a mod you can switch on or off. No patch content is included with the game.
  • Put yourself in the game. One photo → ChatGPT → Tripo 3D → a 3D player, prepared by a small free tool (tripo_fit, on the same page) and given to any player in Edit Team. 90-second tutorial:
  • A pitch from your own photo, even your dining table.
  • Mods as plain text files: rule sets (7-a-side without offside), Training scenarios, new animations.
  • Gameplay: corners and goal kicks aimed from behind the taker, a free-kick aim marker, more precise penalties, keepers who catch slow shots and dive only when needed, first-time passes, runs timed by each player's height, and more natural running.

macOS asks you to click "Open Anyway" once; the page shows the steps.

If you try the patch import, I'd especially like to hear which patch you used and what didn't come through right.
