hello, I’m a noob.

I recently got the envy to discover the pes’ world, through the golden era of that license : ps2 games.

I want to go to liveware evolution versions, because I like the idea to play with final evolution of the games, and also because 2004-2007 teams are one of my favorite era of football.

so, which one could be the best to have fun with : 8le, 9le, or 10le ?

I’m ready to invest myself in the game, because I really want to have that simulation sensation, but if one of those three is more accessible, it will be a good thing.

thank you for your help and advice.

Winning Eleven 8 Liveware Evolution has the biggest gameplay changes out of the lot, compared to its predecessor and is an amazing title.

Winning Eleven 9 Liveware Evolution is a great game too but some prefer PES5 or WE9. Whilst they are similar there are some small changes in terms of ball physics and other things.

Winning Eleven 10 Liveware Evolution is the least different compared to PES6. But PES6 is probably the most popular title in the entire series so its still a solid title.

I would really like to know who thinks PES 5 is better than WE9LE ?. WE9LE was released what, 5 or 6 months after the PES 5 release.

Interview that someone did with Seabass (PES creator) he stated that, his team and himself always had more time to polish their own Japanese/Korean titles. Meaning PES in EU and WE in USA were always a bit bumped down when it comes to almost everything.

There is a reason very well advanced old PES players see the difference between. EU/USA version and what they get in Japan/Korea.

Don't worry i'm an old player myself! Been playing since ISS Deluxe on the SNES.

Well I've played all of the PES5 releases:

Winning Eleven 9 (NTSC-J) released in Japan on August 4th 2005
Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (PAL) released in Europe on October 1st 2005
J.League Winning Eleven 9 Asia Championship (NTSC-J) released in Japan on November 17th 2005
Winning Eleven 9 International (NTSC-U) released in North America on February 7th 2006
Winning Eleven 9 Liveware Evolution (NTSC-K) released in South Korea on March 9th 2006

After playing WE9LE extensively, I found PES5/WE9I to have slightly better ball physics (the ball trajectory in WE9LE is a bit more flat similar to PES6) and a slightly slower game match speed and tempo, both of which I personally prefer. JLWE9AC in particular has probably the best gameplay with a more compact midfield too.

Whats your take on games such as PES 2008 on PS2 ?

Amazing! They have probably the best AI in the series. I particularly like the Japanese release of J.League Winning Eleven 2008 Club Championship. You should check it out if you haven't before. I translated the game into English.

I have made a number of patches for some of these games including WE9LE. I'm also working on an update for my JLWE2008CC patch which will be out soon.

He worked on it but that doesn't mean the games get better for that reason. PES5 vs 6, or WE7 better than PES3. They were at their limits and the only thing they could've improve was the balance and changing some algorithm. A PES should stay fluid.

In that case : i found WE9LE is closely joining PES6 on many aspect, and PES6, even if it's a solid game for some, it's the worst of the series for others (Bruce Grannec, a French Double world Champion and thrust me he was on the same forum as we were : on Twitter he said when PES changed for Efootball than for him, i translated "Sad for PES, it was iconic and so much memories, but i don't forget they released PES6 the worst/bugged version from all the series".

... But it was the most accessible to everyone, some noobs could won time to time against veteran.

Well it's just an explanation. On my case i played WE9LE but it was faster, less physical, more PES6ish. I never played it like a full league but i prefers WE9 and PES5 than that one, due to the direction (more agressive in defense) thoses version took.
Also, for a Liveware Evolution, they could've update the roster FFS, PES5 series is the only one who didn't get his updated version :(
Note : WE10 is part of the Pes6 Series. That game plays nothing like any PES 5 iteration.

And :
10LE arcade
OH YES. It's the worst version i never played, faster than PES6. I even prefers PES4 with all his bugs

I saw some missing lines on ML, it's not like they're important but just for having the complete package.

Otherwhise i was also planning to enhance the kits : as it's pretty hard to assign real templates on it, there's another way to do it but it takes some time : you have to change the original design in game and remplace them with (almost) complete kits.
I wanted to check how to do it, as La Liga kits are pretty hard to reproduce, i managed to recreate / separately / some kits like Espanyol and their big diagonal sponspor pretty impossible to reproduce without that method or with a real template.

Now about editing the SLPM i don't understand anything as it's in another HEX language (japanese?), i tried with WE2008 to try to copy geeee's method for having real templates for all teams.
If you can let me know the .str files that haven’t been translated I will get them fixed. I can’t remember anything missing.

For a noob ? WE8LE !

Definitely the most fun LE variant in my book, because unlike WE10LE which push the arcade side too far, WE8LE keeps the simulation aspect.
So expect a demanding game, but more accessible than WE9LE, which is the ultimate pure simulation.

WE8LE is closer to PES 5 than PES 4, but keep the best of two worlds IMO.

Brother I forgot to ask you, is PES 2008 PS2 same as JLWE9CC ? I played it and it feels smoother than PES 2008. I emulate all games so no real console is being used.

Wait you're getting confused lol.

J.League Winning Eleven 9 Asia Championship (JLWE9AC) is the variant of PES5/WE9 that came out in November 2005.

J.League Winning Eleven 2009 Club Championship (JLWE2009CC) is a completely different game and came out in summer 2009.

J.League Winning Eleven 2008 Club Championship (JLWE2008CC) is the game I am referring to in that quote and that came out the year before in summer 2008 and is kind of a sequel to PES/WE 2008. So yes it will play slightly different from PES 2008.

If you are talking about J.League Winning Eleven 2009 Club Championship (I assume you are), then yeah it will also play differently to PES 2008, even more so. It came out nearly 2 years later.

Gotcha. I had to ask Chat GPT about release dates lol before you replied...with so many titles it sure gets confusing. In your own opinion which cariant is better than PES 5.......? Many say WE9LE is that PES 5.5. How does JLWE9AC compare to PES5/WE9LE. Im asking this as I have huge library of footie games, removing the extra clutter I wouldn't mind. Titles I have:

Modern games: FIFA 16, Pes 17 (Will slap PES 13 there too) not a fan of PES 21 or FL25.

PS2/PC Era

WE8LE - Reefur 2004/05 patch - PS2
WE9LE - Exogenesis Patch - PC
WE9LE - PS2 South Korea Patched
JLeague WE9 CC - PS2 Japan
JLeague WE9 Asia Championship

PS1 era

Winning Eleven 3 Final Version.

I had WE6FE versions (deleted them) had PES 5 original.season (deleted it)...

If able to let me know which variants are better, worse etc

Cheers brotha!

No worries haha and I agree I do the same so only keep the best versions.

So out of the 5 PES5 variants my favourite is either J.League Winning Eleven 9 Asia Championship or Winning Eleven 9 the North American release in February 2006. Both of these are very similar to PES5 but there are some very slight differences. Winning Eleven 9 Liveware Evolution is great too of course but I’ve noticed the ball physics are a bit worse.

Yeah WE8LE especially with the Reefur patch is one of the best WE/PES games ever so that definitely needs to remain in your rotation.

Winning Eleven 6 Final Evolution - specifically the GameCube one is amazing. Haven’t played much of the PS2 version but I remember back in the day people said the GameCube version felt like it had increased degrees of movement because it was only playable with the analog stick, you can’t use the directional pad like you can on the PS2 version so it makes sense.

PES 2008, WE 2008 and J.League 2008 all have some of the best AI in the series so you can’t go wrong with any of them. The J.League one came several months later so there are some gameplay differences.

Also WE 2010 Aoki Samurai on PS2 is a hidden gem in my opinion. Myself and Jackallan fully translated it into English for the first time recently.

On PS1 like you said Winning Eleven 3 Final Version and also Winning Eleven 2002 are the best ones.

And for modern titles PES 2013 is very good and I personally love 2021 too. Just a shame the midfield isn’t more compact. Feels like you have too much space on the pitch.

The Wii games are also incredible and often overlooked by people. Greyhound done a fantastic job and they are great to play with the normal control style and even the Wii Remote style which adds a degree of tactical depth with player positioning.

You're the man!!

Last night I played both WE9LE PS2 on Emulator, then switched to a PC version. PC version (Exogenesis Patch) is just so much better.

What PCX2 settings you recommend. I noticed when I play stadium lines sometimes get choppy. I have a mid to high end PC. Wonder why I have these pitch lines that get choppy.

Make sure you are on the latest nightly release of PCSX2.

I use the Vulkan renderer, 4K upscale, FXAA on and 16x anisotropic filtering on. But be aware, there are some graphical glitches when emulating PES/WE on PCSX2 such as players hair glitching out occasionally. I have reported this to the developers on GitHub but they don't seem particularly interested at the moment.

Cool, thanks. I downloaded latest stable version. Will switch to a nightly release.

Man what I would do to play WE9LE online again. Is there any way in 2025 ?

Apologies for replying to an old post, but I don't recall an interview where Seabass linked the Japanese and Korean versions. The Korean LE version was released much later than the Japanese one within the same iteration. However, I would be interested in seeing this interview if you could provide the source.

I appreciate the passion of everyone in this forum of keeping these old games alive. There is something very special these games.

That said, I have tried every PS2 variant listed here with PCSX2 and I prefer the PC version every time. I can’t quantify why - something about the gameplay just doesn’t feel right. Maybe it’s a little laggy and unresponsive?

I saw this interview on a forum called PESGaming years ago. He talked about that and why PES was having massive success in sales. He thanked the mix of arcade with simulation that made PES great. I haven't been at that board in ages and not sure if its still even around.

I agree. Either that or you really need an old hardware and real CRT tv. They feel slower, sluggish. Wonder if switching to 60 FPS instead of 50 would help.

Or playing on original hardware? Perhaps the emulation is putting in some slight delay.

Agreed. PCSX2 has some delay due to the nature of emulation (at least for now) – playing on a PS2 (with a CRT or a modern HDMI mod) will give you the best experience. Backward-compatible PS3s (except CECHA and CECHB models) also cannot avoid this delay.

WE8LE reefur .9 version is butter smooth and responsive. So is JLWE9AC but WE9LE PS2 version is not as smooth and crisp.
