Re: Battlefield: Bad Company (360 / PS3)
here is my full intake of the game:
major points:
1) Game modes - The whole gold rush mode is new, and it took me a minute to warm up to it. I like it better now that I am used to it. They are adding classic conquest mode in a patch.
2) Squad play - The squad play is not quite as good, but I guess we will see if it is different in the real game. On the PC, you created your own squads and stayed in them until the game was over or until you left the squad. Im not sure I like the random spawning into squads while in game. Some of my friends and I tried forming a squad and then joining a game. It worked OK, but we had mic problems. Hopefully thats just in the demo.
3) Destructable environments - these were great! It worked out much better than I thought it would. The map continuously changes, so you dont have people forever camping choke points, etc. like in the PC game. One time I got on the defender AA gun at the Farm, and leveled all trees and building on both sides of the river. The attacking team had to get past a wide open field with no place to hide. LOL
4) Weapons - I have mixed feelings about these. I played the support LMGs a lot and found them wildly inconsistent vs the PC game. It seemed the assault weapons took down people at range with better efficiency which makes little sense. Overall, I would say the LMGs are a bit underpowered from the PC game. The shotguns work nicely I have to say lol
5) Classes - the classes are pretty well done vs the PC game. The one exception is the support class. It seems they did away with the medic class which was essentially Spec Ops with a medkit instead of C4. The support class now does the medkit. Thats fine, except the support class used to be able to resupply the troops. If you ran out of ammo, a support guy could drop some at you and give you a resupply. I dont see that capability anymore. Also, the support guy does the vehicle repair which I thought used to be with the Anti-tank class. Essentially, the support class seems to do everything now, where it was a bit more spread out in the PC game.
6) Graphics - not on the level of COD4 but very good anyway...especially in the mechanization of the desctructable environments. Overall the graphics are slightly crisper than the PC game.
Overall I am very pleased with this game. As a Battlefield veteran, I am definitely picking it up. It is a very good change of pace to the run-n-gun feel of COD4.
